Wow! My fave part of the interview- his description of what kind of man he wants to be. “what kind of man do you want to be, “I want to be a man that can overcome his weaknesses, vices and imperfections, a man who is not a slave to his passions and desires but, a real man who is in control of himself.” A powerful guy- is able to say no to a vice. I’d like to be a powerful guy who can control his emotions and vices. Amen!
I've had the honor of designing for Bas in recent years. His FB cover, RUclips channel art and his Big DVD's of Combat are all my work and I can tell you that working with him and his wife has always been a good experience. He might have a (well deserved) reputation for his fighting skills but, they're also really nice people and very easy to work with. Truly an honor to have been recommended and chosen to handle his branding.
My favorite martial artist. The story of when he gets anxious nerves before a fight, he talks in 3rd person to himself to calm himself down, that method I still use today and I heard that years ago on youtube video.
I used to scream "fuck it" and slap myself lol. I think trying to convince myself I didn't care what happened "fuck it" just get out there and get hurt "Fuck It!" Go out there and hurt someone else. I've only been asked about it a few times. I always laugh thinking what it must be like hearing some dude in the lockeroom / bathroom screaming FUCK IT followed by slapping noises. I TRIED not to do it but, I don't think I ever didn't do it when I had a real match.

I don’t have many friends. After I got injured my military friends disappeared and that had been my life for a decade. Between transitioning to civilian life and learning to live with my disabilities I began self isolating more and more. Mr. Rutten seems like he would be a cool guy to go hang with on a fishing trip. I don’t know if he even likes to fish… I would just really like to know what he is like outside of a fighting style atmosphere. I’ve tried to power through my pain before and just haven’t been able to find a happy median, I’m so sick of always hurting and all the medications that help with a portion of the pain. I’m really glad I learned who Bas Rutten is. I’ve watched d his old matches and even watched the tv show he was on with kevan James but his smile he has when he talks about being the bully beater made me happy to see. Actually he smiled anytime he spoke about fighting….. I would like to know if he is still a bird lover and if he has any as pets?
A very edifying soul. You asked very good questions. He answered everything so enthusiastically.Listening to him talk about his catholicism was quite captivating.
I enjoyed this podcast so immensely--man you can't help but love Bas Rutten, that unique gem of a human being--so immensely that I will force my family members to watch all 2hrs. Thanks Tim; thanks Bas, you freakin legend
Bas is a legend! I followed his whole career when it was happening. I saw when he was training Mark Kerr & Ricco Rodriguez etc. I was a young grappler age 13 taking judo when the first UFC came out in 1993. So I grew up watching MMA form & grow. Mental!. He was a proper lad running around wth nun-chucks, swinging from trees and homing jackdaws!. I myself, my brother & friend had jackdaws. Amazingly smart birds. We also made nunchucks (we called them moon-shacks) and spent alot of time up trees or down cliffs. Danger was non existent to us. Nice to hear story's of youth like that. These days its spent on here or they don't want to go holidays unless there's WiFi. Genuinely a really nice guy. 👍. Good pod.✌
Crazy I remember my step pops put me into bas rutten years ago and now I have his bas rutten body action system. Crazy to think had he pursued being a chef majority of martial artists wouldn’t be where we’re at. Thank you for not giving up on what you really wanted🙏🏿
It's a very basic thing to train and breathe with 丹田 for the Daoist and Chinese internal martial artists for thousands of years. Great to hear Bas's footnote for this from a modern physiology perspective.
*My favorite thing in PRIDE was when "Rampage" commentated his own match against Masaaki Satake on the Pride 20 DVD. It was in the Special Features of PRIDE 20 DVD. Netflix had their entire catalogue in the mid-2000s, and I watched every event. To this day, PRIDE is still my all-time favorite fighting promotion1 We will never again see such epic awesomeness in combat sports.*
Mr Rutten is very inspirational and a real motivator,I have seen him couple of years ago in Singapore, normally I am gone after 3 min of motivating speakers , listened 1 hours straight and got my picture with him 😊, Osuuu
I am 20 mins in and in stitches. Not sure if its still coming, but I first saw Bas in some self defense videos that he had made. My buddy and I would watch this over and over and out catch phrase became “Boom! Kick him in the head!”
I had a game chicken like that. No one else could touch him but he'd step in my hand and sit on my shoulder. He almost didn't make it but I fed him the same way Bas was speaking of. They truly love you when you make that bon
I love when you asked how when he was bouncing, how did he diffuse an altercation without violence. Fantastic question! Fantastic answer as well. Great video thank you!
Been using the O2 trainer for years for asthma, even have the older model. Its a little miracle device. One day youre working out and are just able to do twice as much twice as intense with very little committment each day. Its amazing. I do 4 rounds of 12 reps with the O2 trainer, straight into Wim Hof method before a workout.
This should put end to myth that sport fighters cannot beat street fighters. I fully concur. I'm not Mr. Rutten's caliber, but training muaythai at Fairtex taught me just about every thing Mr. Rutten said. Situation awareness, distance, rhythm which is opportunity, and endurance which is controlling your stress (anxiety) and breathing.
Budda bing, budda boom, Ka danga da danga da dang.. and hes out like a light.. A small exert from Bas's self defence vids.. lol. Love Bas.. excellent podcast. Cheers
@Tim Ferriss Hey Tim, I’m a huge Bas Rutten fan. I found this interview with Bas and you and just started following you today. Awesome interview! The big question for me is how well did your breathing training work for you? Thanks for the content and I look forward to catching up to what you have posted so far 👊🏽
you are a Great interviewer sir. Thank you for having this legend on and asking the great questions and enabling us to get the really in depth points on the life of such an amazing guy.
The spinning back kick really touched home with me. Because as a 16 year old teen, I actually used a very well placed spinning back kick. It was against a larger twenty something year old man. It put him on the ground. I basically stood there in shock that it had knocked him down. That guy then ran away. That was over 43 years ago. 😁 it was like one of those fictional scenes in a movie. That never happened in a real fight. So that guy had probably never been in a real fight.
Man I would love to hang out with Bas at a bar and just listen to a few stories. Great enthusiast story teller. I knew an older gentleman that used to tell me all kinds of interesting stories. Had me rolling.
I had the good fortune to meet Bas at his Legends MMA gym in LA probably 18 years ago. He couldn't have been a nicer, more approachable guy. Hard to believe that same personality dismantled so much anatomy.
The Dutch started trading in Japan in the 1600s. Maybe they brought some of the martial arts back with them which helped establish long tradition of combat sports in The Netherlands. My best guess.
Hello Bas, Any way to do "O2" with nasal breathing? I've got throat issues (coughed my brains out during Covid...), plus want to get the nitric oxide benefit that comes from breathing through the nose. Thanks! John R. PS - great podcast Tim and Bas!
Tim: Bas Rutten & Rob Kamen were some of my instructors that taught fighting at a big Krav Maga Studio. They both were great. They didn't let the Black Belts & bullies unnecessarily abuse us new students. They stopped the bullies & instructors in the fight class!
Great interview. I've been practicing original hot yoga for over a decade and it makes so much sense what he says about breathing. Yoga taught me how to breathe. There's something about practicing a discipline that helps our brains and bodies. Breathing seems to be the interface.

*EDIT-ERROR What happened at 58:21 when Bas was in full throw and then you cut back to yourself saying “is coming up like a 🏐 “
*😅 imitating Bas’s voice and then I guess the angle of the knife thrust is like hitting a volleyball return! 🎉
Big up❤

Nice man, you can feel his positivity.
He’s only nice bc he’s meaner than 99+% of the planet.
Great interview! What a fun human being, Bas's energy is infectious.
It is infectious , he is one of life's teachers also .
This guy is such a thoughtful & skillful interviewer. Beautiful spirit, too. And Bas is such a joyful man.

Bas! Awesome! Thanks y’all! 👏👊🙏
What a fantastic human! Amazing episode. Thank you! 🙏🏻
I can listen to Bas stories all day! Inspirational guy for sure!
Bas was a beast even without takedown defense he was still able to be extremely successful with instincts
In past interviews Bas stated anytime he won a match by submission it was after the opponent took him to the ground.
Wrestling on the ground is risky on the street due to outside interferance.

Tai chi static exercises: holding the ball, keeping shoulders down and elbows up.
I had heard about the O2 trainer and never looked into it but after hearing Bas talk about it I am definitely going order one.
