I was just gifted this piece of machinery, and as a hifi amateur cannot for the life of me figure out how to properly connect it... I've been getting along fine with my Denon 2310CI running B&W 683 speakers, but am interested in what my speakers would sound like with some real power. I tried connecting my towers to the Tandberg, and the Tandberg to the Zone 2 output on my receiver. The receiver cannot control the volume, it basically sputters in and out at crazy volume, and cuts out. I've tried troubleshooting everything, using different sources (tried CD player and a record player). Is there something major I'm forgetting?

You need a pre-amplifier to control the volume. Your Denon zone 2 output doesnt seem to do it.
