MORE OF THIS FOREVER AND ALWAYS Edit: Okay, now that the initial shock has worn off a bit, HOLY CRAP I did not expect the Late Show Band to be so absolutely outstanding. I mean, having Meshell there didn't hurt, but still. What a fantastically talented group of musicians.
What an incredible group of musicians. Jon is and always will be amazing, but Louis Cato has stepped right up. Look forward to seeing Stephen interact with the band more and learning their names (like on Conan!)
In case you're interested,.... the current roster is: Louis Cato (bandleader/guitar); Endea Owens (bass); Negah Santos (percussion); Joe Saylor (drums); Jon Lampley (trumpet); Louis Fouché (sax); and Corey Bernhard (keyboards). Most if not all of them are multi-instrumentalists. I watched Endea Owens do a Tiny Desk Concert before I got who she was. They're all so amazing.
Love how the band actually know they are playing with a…LEGEND✊🏾 She needs to tour!🙏🏾 Fantastic performance & special shout out to that TRUMPET PLAYER…he seems to actually be enjoying himself.
I LOVE HER! Her album, "Peace Beyond Passion" is my favorite funk & soul music ever, and I've been around since the days of Sly & the Family Stone. And as a bass player, I could only hope that my playing could ever reach the depths of emotion she exhibits. BRILLIANT!!
Just listened to Meshell's Omnichord Realbook...blown away & then this in my recommended youtube list - blown away again, what a track & what a band!!!
Almost every time The Late Show has a musical guest, I go "Who?" Then I hear them and go "OMG" Mind blowing, almost all of the musical acts that come on, mind blowing! Whoever does the musical bookings for this show, you're not being paid enough!!!
Well, that was as refreshing as an unexpected gentle rainshower. In Texas. Thanks for this! Anyway we could have this more often. Nice seeing her in the mainstream.
I had no idea the band could jam out that well! Diggin this big time. Maybe they should tell that Colbert guy to let the band do more music on the show.
I'd be surprised if they couldn't. They're all first-call jazzers who can play their asses off, plus they get one thing most jazz bands, even the best, don't - regular practice as a band.
I heard there was a complicated contractual rights problem with allowing some of these live performances to be aired on TV. Apparently they have found a way to get around that for RUclips!!!
Louis is so effing cool. I loved Jon's work, but Louis is the long-term band leader in my eyes. Such wonderful energy and brilliant, broad, engaging skills, and a fantastic ability to integrate these guest artists.
Thank you for having this AWESOME Artist here on your show!!! HAVE LOVED HER SINCE INCEPTION. LOVE ME'SHELL'S FACE WHEN SHE IS REALLY FEELING IT! Band is great too!!!
This is amazing. I'm so glad to hear this. I will investigate her music further. How many times have I complained that there's no good music out there anymore? Now I know it's just a lack of me being involved. And that dude on the trumpet just WRECKED it - wow
This was a better performance than many of the artists you have promoted on the show! Whoever is responsible for posting here needs to ensure this is a regular feature. Due my schedule I rarely get to see the show at broadcast so I rely heavily on the clips you post. Fantastic performance!
It's one of my favorite songs of hers. I'm really happy to be able to see this song performed live. When she came to Japan, she had just released her "Comet, Come to Me" album and it was a really fun show. I still remember the shock I felt when she debuted, and I love all of her albums.
Yes! That's what I'm talking bout! Real musicianship. Thank you Colbert for highlighting her incredible music. More people need to know about this incredible artist!
Oh, I remember her. She's the one who did that duet with John Mellencamp and had that song "If That Was Your Boyfriend". I wondered what happened to her.
wow, that is a genuine legend and unexpected for mainstream TV musical acts
💯
More of this please. It's maddening to always hear this band finishing what was clearly a killer performance.
Yes more of band on show❤❤❤❤
THIS is the magic of live music. What an incredible performance by each individual, because the is so much greater than the parts.
KEEP POSTING THESE!! You have a great band with amazing artists sitting in for a night or a week on the regular. Share it with the people.
That bass guitar has seen life and is life.....
I just love Meshell. Her voice holds all of her candor and passion and her music is absolutely beautiful.
She’s one of one! There’s nobody like her
What a legend! Been a fan since I first heard her ages ago back in the early 90s.
Me too! As a bass player she’s SO solid! Her voice and lyrics. I wish I could sing and play like her!
Yeah
I go back to her 1st Album
Plantation Lullabies.
She's the Truth!
Yes indeed! Meshelle is a force! And the musicians she chooses to be around understand the assignment
Saw Meshelle live back in 2003 and she still has that shyt that nobody can EFF with
100% LOVE Meshell Ndegeocello : This jam is the BEST jam!!!!!
Phenomenal artist, Meshell is a magical being.
That bass harmony MeShell hits at 4:52 is part of what makes her such an essential part of why bass guitars do it for me.

Word
Watch the Cory Wong "Lunchtime" one if you haven't, it's nuts. This band is nuts.
Seeing them live...you won't be able to sit still..dance..dance I say!
What an incredible group of musicians. Jon is and always will be amazing, but Louis Cato has stepped right up. Look forward to seeing Stephen interact with the band more and learning their names (like on Conan!)
I second that!~

This is Meshell Ndegeocellos' 30th Anniversary in the music business. I believe she's had that same bass for 30 years.
This is Amazing TV. Thank Goodness for Meshell . Fantastic Group of Musicians .
Almost every time The Late Show has a musical guest, I go "Who?" Then I hear them and go "OMG" Mind blowing, almost all of the musical acts that come on, mind blowing! Whoever does the musical bookings for this show, you're not being paid enough!!!
You can't go wrong with the Late Show taste in music. Every time LSSC has introduced me to someone I have never heard of, it has been amazing
That was absolutely freakin' awesome. Plus Meshell too. Luis Cato and the band were killin' it.
Meshell Ndegeocello always one of my forever favorites! That trumpet solo was sweet too!

I love that they’ve started posting these music breaks! This is only second one I’ve seen but I LOVE it!
That is a good idea.
No one is doing this.
I heard there was a complicated contractual rights problem with allowing some of these live performances to be aired on TV. Apparently they have found a way to get around that for RUclips!!!
A mayyyyyyyzing. Down to Earth but very cosmic sounding also
Great idea. Keep posting these "commercial break" videos. The band is so excellent.
