- After living in Britain for 26 years, I love a good British motorway. But there's nothing quite like Historic Route 66 - America's mother road. After becoming fully vaccinated, the wife and I drove along much of the Illinois portion. Here's what we saw.

EDIT: Whenever you see the word "Missouri" in this video, it's very important that you pretend I wrote "Mississippi." Okay?
if it says "mississippi" pretend it's "mississippi"? a tad redundant isn't it?

Questioned my geography knowledge there Mr. Brown.😀
The Missouri River just a little bit further than the Mississippi in St. Louis like half an hour away.
What Missouri? I think you dreamed you wrote that...

I was born in a small town on Route 66 and have lived here all my life. The things I take for granted are an adventure others.
Agree! But I was born IN Springfield Illinois with the museum and everything right down the road but I’ve only went as a kid..I think I’m gunna make a date with the old lady for this weekend 😅
Not a road comment, but a "took it for granted" comment: The Salem (Massachusetts) Witch Museum was located a few buildings from my grandparents house. No big deal to me until I met out-of-state people who'd exclaim, "Oooh, Monica! How exciting!!"
We took a trip to LA a few years ago and ran into a group of Irish guys in Winslow AZ who were following the length of Route 66 in a rented vintage convertible. Trip of a lifetime; way to go gentlemen!
Did the Irish guys happen to meet Glenn Frey standin'on a corner, such a fine sight to see a girl,my Lord,in a flat bed Ford, slowin'down to look at him...just wonderin'..
I assume they took the opportunity to stand on a corner? lol I did. but maybe thats not culturally important to internationals
I was headed to NJ from OK and ran into a couple of guys on motorcycles that were following the route. I can't remember now if they were from Ireland or where, exactly, but that was pretty cool to see someone traveling that road from another country. Who'd have ever thought it'd be famous?
LA the State or the city
I've heard the road is in pretty bad shape in a lot of places and it's not exactly safe once you get into the Western states.
Buying museum merch helps them pay the bills, you did good.
Especially since museums were shut down just like everything else. As were the living history places.
Museums usually have the BEST merchandise, too. Not unusual for me to drive to museums specificalyl to XMAS shop.

This is how i felt as well. Really like it a lot
Ten years ago, online America hate was a national sport for the British, perhaps second only to futbol. But, they've lost again to America. No one hates America now more than brainwashed Americans. It's not a surprise and won't be a surprise for a good while, that foreigners who've not been brainwashed in American schools end up admiring the USA more than Americans.
@@ClockCutter What a crock! I’m pretty sure I know where you’re coming from, but to contend that American schools teach kids to ‘hate’ the US is simply ridiculous. And to say the English have ‘lost’ again provides a real window into how you perceive the world. Sad.
@@pacmanc8103 some liberal schools really do!!! I am witness to it!
@@pacmanc8103 I'll note for the record that nowhere in that screed did you actually refute anything I said.
It's patently clear, very well documented even, that (1) children are being taught to think that the US is endemically, irredeemably racist, and that (2) at the same time, because of this, there's nothing admirable about the country. Everything is stained. This is teaching children to hate their own country. The fact that you call the claim ridiculous says more about you than it does about reality.
The British have plainly lost the contest for America-hate to Americans themselves by any metric. E.g., total number of people who hate the US? Of course we win, hands down. The ferocity of the hatred? We win again. Nothing is more putrid, rotten, and ferocious as hating yourself. More energy and commitment is required than hating something foreign.
This was lovely. I was born and raised in Chicago, but my grandparents lived in Gardner IL. Many times in my childhood I took the greyhound bus down Route 66 to visit them. I remember getting frozen custard in Wilmington IL home of the Gemini Giant, and eating it in the park by the dam. Ahhhh, we were due to do Route 66 this summer just gone. On the ubiquitous Harley, but the wrong way from LA to Chicago.
I had all the itinerary planned and all the side trips to immerse my wife and I in deepest Americana. But it wasn’t to be…. So thank you both for giving us a short holiday, albeit on screen, and reaffirming our desire to see more of the States and that wonderful vastness you just don’t get in the UK.

There is another very historic road that goes right though Chicago, although it is very less well known now: The Lincoln Highway. It was the first paved road on which you could drive from coast to coast.
Yes, Route 30. There is also Route 40, the National Road.
The Lincoln Highway through Pennsylvania is a lot more interesting. Illinois is just flat.
@@penguinsfan251 to stay with the theme of Illinois tourism, the original alignment of the National Road runs directly in front of the Vandalia State House where Lincoln first served as a state Representative and helped broker the deal to move the capital to Springfield
The Lincoln Highway was actually established back in 1913, while Route 66 was not established until 1926,
so not only does the LH run from coast to coast; it is much older than Route 66 and was the TRUE "first" highway.
Chicago was also the starting point for one branch of the Dixie Highway, another road project that predated the US Highway system. The Illinois portion of that road basically corresponds to Illinois State Route 1 from Chicago to Danville.
Used to work at a popular stop on Route 66. We got a lot of European (namely Norwegian) tourists. I remember asking one such person why on earth anybody would enjoy such a long drive. "There's nothing out there!" I said. He said, "Exactly!" Makes you realize how easy it is to take for granted where you are. Only solved by seeing and meeting other places and people!
You need the EZ66 Guide for Travelers. It's the roadies' "Bible" of Route 66. It's turn -by-turn directions. Love this video!
PS You could also follow the Facebook page for the Route 66 Information Station for tips on driving Route 66.
Totally the best guide. I found it at Henry's Rabbit Ranch in Illinois after starting with another map. The EZ66 Guide made my trip of the whole route mostly painless and found many places I might have otherwise missed.
Thank you! I want to do the Route 66 drive someday soon.
Oh my Lord! You just reminded me of the road trips my parents used to take us on as a child 😳. Six kids in an old wood sided station wagon (we called it “the woody”). We drove Route 66 in the late 60’s. My Dad had to stop and see everything. I seem to remember stopping to see “The Giant Ball of String”... somewhere along the route 🤔. The man worked for the airlines, so we could fly for free, but nope, he had to pile us all up in the station wagon, and drive us cross country 😂🤦🏻♀️😳. Left my brother behind at a rest stop once, and had to go back for him! God Bless my dear Mother!
Good story!
@@DUCKDUCKGOISMUCHBETTER, Just an addendum to my story. My parents were married 70 years. At their 70th party, I asked my Mom how she managed to stay married to him for 70 years… she said “Oh Sissy, that would have to be resisting the urge kill him in his sleep”! 😂🤣🤣😂🤣

@@yrok244 Oh, why thank you. I'm glad I could brighten your day.
I tried driving out huge sections of 66 about a decade ago. My favorite segments were in Arizona, where there's the "Standin' on the Corner" statue in Winslow, AZ (emulating the famous Eagles song) and, on the other side of the state, when 66 dead-ends in AZ and you pretty much end up driving through a pasture field if you don't turn around.
@WT Keeton: Well, now I’m wondering if it is a pasture or a field? A field is an open, mostly unfenced area of land usually plowed and planted annually with things like corn, beans, wheat, oats, rice, alfalfa, tomatoes, potatoes, sugar beets, carrots, sometimes strawberries or other produce & harvested usually with a combine or tractor with a special attachment. A pasture is an enclosed or fenced grassy area used for grazing grass-fed animals such as cattle, sheep, goats, alpacas etc. I’m really curious now about the end of the road- would you run into a fence or not? A pasture at the end would be more dangerous than a field.
A note about Rte 66. It doesn't exist along some parts of it. For instance, in California before you get into Arizona, it's practically nothing but potholes and occasional pavement. Then, there's a part in that same stretch where you have to get onto I-40 for a bit before exiting and getting back on yet another bad stretch. Other than that, it's worth trying to do the whole route. Thanks for taking us along on your brief excursion down the mother road.
I understand that CalTrans took down all the old Route 66 signs and just threw them out, when the California sections of it were decommissioned.
@@markpage9397 Yeah, there are still small segments where it's painted on the road, but no highway signs per se.

I'm so happy that you included Joliet in this. I grew up on Route 53 which is part of old Rt 66. My sister and I actually met some New Zealanders who came over and rented an RV to take Rt 66 and Joliet is so full of RT 66 pride. Plus, Joliet is the last suburb included in Chicagoland before you hit farm lands.
If you want to see some birds and nature in Illinois I highly suggest Starved Rock State Park, in Utica, Illinois. About an hour and a half SW of Chicago.
A guy I work with was at Starved Rock last week. From his pictures it's beautiful
@@debbiesims138 it sure is especially the cannons and waterfall
We drove to Springfield for a family vacation a few years back and did all the Lincoln stuff there and my 6 year old, always the comedian, had the best line. After seeing Lincoln’s house, Lincoln’s Tomb and Lincoln’s law office my little guys, doing a tell tale dance, asked “Can we go see Lincoln’s toilet”.
That would be the outhouse behind Lincoln's house.
Lawrence, you are a true gem. Thanks for always bringing us joy!
Love that you did a road trip on Route 66. Many of the old abandoned gas stations are being reclaimed and repurposed. The architecture is so unique. There was an effort to do this along historic highways nationwide.
Now I wait for Lav Luka , Beesley and a few other British reactors to react to Lawrence.
And Mr. H 😊🐝❤
@@deborahdanhauer8525 yes of course Mr H and friends.😄
Me too!
I love seeing our country through your eyes! Thanks!
I’m 21/US-Kansas. And I’ve had British friends since I was 12 on Xbox who live all over England and who have told me what they THINK about America in their honest opinions (Not typical banter shit) and I’ve always wanted to see a Brit actually come over, explore, and give their thoughts, opinions, likes and dislikes about the States!
Read/watch Dave Gormans America Unchained. A lot of the stuff has probably closed since he did it, but it's good entertainment for a Brit visiting the US.
Thanks for taking us along on your beautiful road trip.
OMGoodness!! I live in Decatur, Illinois and I wish I could have met you guys!! Bloomington is an hour from us..Springfield is 45mins! Best of love and luck with your travelling. To think you guys were so close......
In 2004 my daughter had some chronic migraines and was pretty much stuck at home. So in 2005 during Spring Break I surprised her with a road trip on Route 66 in Oklahoma. (We live in Texas) It was easy going, sleep in whatever city we had supper in, stop at every road side Route 66 tourist trap. Best trip ever!!! We spent all week enjoying the ride and the simple scenery, took pictures, and had our first Buffalo Burger.
It’s a trip as many people as can should take before all the simple life is gone. My daughter was relaxed and happy and ready to tackle the rest of the semester.
Some day soon will take the full Route 66!
Here comes the ol cliche' travel while you're young enough to enjoy it.
I was blessed by my husband organizing a trip for our family across America( more or less).
We lived in South Africa at that time and had never seen such a vast country that was just so much fun, we were in our forties.at the time.
I'm seventy now, my husband passed away this last November NOT from Covid.
I've got a touch of arthritis but am doing great, BUT our travelling days are over .
and I am loving reliving fond happy memories.
So Lawrence ! what's wrong with you ? :) why havent you got a license.
So, you probably have a better understanding of why most Americans don't travel outside of the US than many of your fellow South Africans, and most Europeans.
@@diarradunlap9337 Indeed, BTW we emigrated to Canada 25 years ago and every year would travel down to Lincoln City Oregon, it was the highlight of the year, of course we would stock up at Trader Joe en route as we don't have them here.
Good evening: I use to live in Illinois, born in Chicago, moved to these places: WonderLake in Mc Henry County, Country Club Hills Cook County, then Skokie. After time I am in Elk City, Oklahoma live 2 houses off of Rt.66. I
Great to see you and Tara on the road again! I'm glad you enjoyed yourselves. Safe travels!
I drove around a lot of this country when I was young... I don't remember any of the road-highway-freeway names but I remember some pretty cool stuff. Speaking of cool things, there is a giant razor clam in Long beach, WA that squirts every hour on the hour. It's a must see. 😐
You’re a natural for showcasing this country. Your humor is fantastic.
I now know Laurence was facing north while reading that book.
🤣
That's the first thing I thought of too, lol
"ya but I didn't take into count the time diff......"
tara silently shaking her head
"there isn't a time diff is there?"
"not all all" tara replies sarcastically. lol. y'all r too damn funny. thx u for being both of u. don't ever change :)
What fun! I've always wanted to get my kicks on Route 66. Someday I'll get there!
Route 66 is a lot of fun, I highly recommend the whole trip!!!
It would be funny if you had to go through a window at the door store.
I don't think they'd appreciate throwing windows at their store
It's great to see you out and about again! Can't wait to see more travel videos! 👍😊
Your fellow countryman, Paul McCartney, traveled Route 66 with his future wife, Nancy Shevel.
