That was incredibly helpful thank you so much for making the step by step folding/stitching instructions! I bought the traditional pattern from folklore and when it saw it had no physical template I panicked so hard. Watching you place the pieces together step by step especially using a small scale helped he envision the whole thing. Thank you!!
I'm a guy, I make characters in 3d, and your tutorial is the best one and most easy to follow of any and all Sewing pattern tutorials I've ever seen. You absolutely blew me away here :D I would absolutely love to see you more clothing tutorials done by you that are as well done as this one, you got amazing tutorial skills. The paper template you made also helps SO MUCH in understanding what you have to do. It makes more sense then a drawing or someone showing it with actual cloth. Once again thank you! Keep up the good work. :)
+Cerberus Thank you! The paper template was painstakingly made & introduced to let people hands-on themselves. Sadly a lot of people don't bother with that and just kept commenting that they don't understand without putting in effort to understand it.
The whole paper example makes this extremely easy to understand! ! If it was the actual cloth version in site the bundling of fabric and size would actually make it confusing. Also, the little sewing machine, adorable.
Watching this makes the directions I have make soooo much more sense. I bought the Folkwear Hakama and Kataginu pattern, and their directions for the hakama himo lack pictures (which I need). This tutorial has helped me sooo much. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Thank you so much for these! They were very helpful and i like the traditional asymmetry compared to newer patterns. These hakama were my first ever sewing project and they came out great!
This is incredible helpful!! I was wanting to crossplay as Kenshin Himura, but making a hakama gave me a lot of fear of ruining perfectly good fabric because I'm truly messy with measures or doing a crappy job because I have very little patience. Thank you!! Now I know there's no way I could mess this up xD!
i reversed the pieces...by accident. but i can make it work. it wasn't your tutorial that was the issue. i just cut the material wrong. my mistake aside, im about 40% done now. great job on this...if you're curious i am doing kenshin from rurouni kenshin.
This is an amazing video, so clear!! I wish I had found this first. After several videos, blogs, I still didn't feel like I fully understood how to make one - now I do!
A wonderful tutorial, and extremely easy to understand. Love how you made it so simple to modify to any size, that is very helpful. Thanks ever so much for posting this video.
C = it's usually a few inch but it will change depending on your waist length. I like to roughly gauge all 4 of them to take up 25% of your entire waist length. But it's really a personal thing... as long as it looks correct to you, its fine Take note of the red curvy line that indicated exactly where 'C' should be. It is NOT the gap between the hips & waist.
Hi everyone, the hakama template link is fixed! Check out my blog to download it ^_^ ---> thecosplaychronicles.blogspot.sg/2010/11/how-to-cosplay-making-hakama-simple-way.html
the thing is that all of the 4 patterns are different...you have not mentioned...how to divide your measurement between patterns. Because one of hem is bigger...another is smaller. So it is confusing how many cm or inch each pattern should have according to our measurements.
This is the most cool and original sewing tutorial I´ve seen! Thank you so much! The arrows to know which side the fabric must go and different color to point which piece is which in your paper pattern is amazing!
@elpheal Thank you very much! This was very helpful! So should the waist belt be the width of the hole of the back flap? Depending on how big the hole you make?
Wait for the green part where it folds in, the part of the hakama that kind of looks like pockets when you finish it, is it necessary to sew in the flaps? If not, does it pop out? When I see people wear hakamas, the flaps you fold in never pop out, so is it necessary to sew them?
12 years later and i'm so glad i found this, the most useful hakama tutorial on youtube (the others are okay, but way too technical for a begginer like me)
@@tenshijeonkookie5273 That was the most difficult part. We decided the pleads would be 5cm and went on. The lenght is easy, it's the same as any long trousers plus 2 to 4cm margin (in order to sew the bottom part). The width is the difficult one, but you can make adjustments in the pleads, because the back part of them won't be visible. I hope this helps, i'm not a proffesional taylor and english is not my first language. Good luck!
Hey! Your comment is one of the most recent here, can you explain to me the relationship between the first pattern (with the measurements and the A, B, C...) and the second that is to be printed? I followed the steps in the video and on paper it worked, but I can't understand how to apply this to the measurements of the first pattern :(
it's usually a few inch but it will change depending on your waist length. I like to roughly gauge all 4 of them to take up 25% of your entire waist length. But it's really a personal thing... as long as it looks correct to you, its fine.
Thank you very much for the tutorial, Kaika, it helps me a lot to understand how to make the hakama! I measured everything as you said in the tutorial, but I got confused when I tried to cut the fabrics out. Can you tell me where the measurements in respect with the template? Also, just to make sure, C is the widths of the gaps on both side? do you need to divide it into half? Because I want the gaps at the side like 15cm wide, but it doesn't look right when I do the math... I ended up with 1.5cm for A, but when I divide 15 into half, it comes out 15cm for A. Sorry for firing you with bunch of questions...It is the first time for me to make this and I am very confused with so many stuff! Hope to hear back from you soon!
What kind of fabric to you recommend to use for making a hakama? I'm relatively new to sewing for cosplays.. and I'm aware that some fabrics might be too "soft" and won't have that "crease" look for the hakama.. ;m; any tips?
Hello I'd like to ask you if you could make some toturial of making Ichigo's bankai costume? Or if you did where could I find it? thanks great vid btw :)
I love your toturials!they are awesome easy made and very good to understand. for me as a german cosplayer starter its a big help.so I want to thank you for this awesome work you do!Thx a lot!
Thanks for making this tutorial. Please advise / recommend a material and what settings on the sewing machine we should use (yes, I am a complete sewing virgin). :))
Hi, I like the way you show everybody how to make hakama like this. =D But I have 1 question: Normally what kind of cloth for ppl to make hakama? Like polyester?
@PinkCheetah101 C = this depends on how comfortable you are with the slits. Maybe 6 - 9inch? E = yup Back flap = personally I just do a rough gauge. I don't have any size to follow...I kinda just based it on the anime characters
I have a few questions: What is the waist band width? How/What is the measure for C? How far down should C go down the side of your leg? Is E how long you waist to your feet are? How do you determind the size of the Back Flap? Thank you so much! It would help a lot if you can answer these questions! I love this tutorial! :)
Hay, I've got a little tip people who are having a hard time doing the crotch seam. If you do that seam right after getting the pleats in, then the side seams, it's much easier than waiting until the legs are together to do them. It's a very informative tutorial either way, that can also be modified to be used on dolls, like BJDs or Barbies, as well.
You will minimally need 4 x meter of fabric if you are tiny. Check out the paper template in the blog, print it out and play around with it. It should help give you a better idea. Gd luck!
FINALLY!!! Finally a tutorial for hakama dear..Gawd... D: Thankyou so muchie! Can you please maybe do a tutorial for the top part also? I really am confused on how to do/sew the collar...So please? :O
I'm having trouble and the probably isn't the best beginner sewing project, but how do you do the crotch area? And how to you lay the measurments on the fabric? In the guide you have on your blog it just says 'once you're done cutting' but I'm a little lost
Just so you know. To make the groin area easier, you could sew the sides first, the groin area secont, and the inner leg sceme last. At least that's what I do on regular pants to make sewing them easier.
The four leg parts seems quite asymmetrical. So do you happen to have the vertical/horizontal ratio to each part? meaning that once you have measured the height you could multiply the vertical measure to ratio and thus get the horizontal measure.
***** No ratio and yes the four parts of asymmetrical. check out the blog for the template and try the paper cut out. That should help you to understand.
I know this was posted ten years ago, and I don't think anyone will respond, but what do you do if you want the bottom of the pants the be puffy? Do you sew a cuff piece onto the bottom of the legs or something?
I'm really tempted to go and make all these clothes you've made but I'm sure as soon as I do I'll mess up somewhere xD haha ah well guess thats the whole point of learning by trial and error.
Can you please explain what parts of the template are A, F, D and E. I measured everything as instructed, but you don't explain how I then measure the fabric correctly when it's open. On your template there are no letters so how do the measurements help me?

Thanks a lot! I'm thinking of making a new video on this subject because so many people have questions ^^;;
A wonderful tutorial, and extremely easy to understand. Love how you made it so simple to modify to any size, that is very helpful. Thanks ever so much for posting this video.
Little question: Where you take the C mesure? its my personal choice or i have to calculate the opening on each side?
This is a very simple design, and easy to follow, especially with the included templates. Thank you very much for posting!
glad u liked it!

You made this so much simpler to understand, thank you
Thanks a lot for your very helpful tutorial
By the way, I like playing Ikimonogakari while sewing too
@Kakashi112233 I think it's just a personal prference what fabric you use =)? Polyester are nice to work with and dont crease as badly

nixetan same :/
and how much does C need to be?

That not a hakama what you're describing is called a mompe.
There are 4 diff patterns? I thought the front right and front left has the same size, but it's diff from one another
Very cool, thanks for sharing! One of these days, I'll have to get my wife to explain to me how her sewing machine works.. :P

I've seen in comments a lot of "cosplay hakama" vs "real" hakama, what is the difference in the construction?
Do you have to make the pleats? Kikyo's hakama doesn't seem to have any pleats...
also, what is the second song?

one question - how do we work out the length of C in relation to our own measurements? thanks again for this tutorial!
this is for a cosplay hakama right
not the *REAL* one?
i was about to do this but i think i'll put something here
likes additional length for waist band etc.
btw thanks for the tutorial
it's cute! :3
Thank you for this tutorial! This really will be helpful for my Byakuya cosplay for Expo next year! :D

Hi hi! The last song is "Kikoete imasuka" (translates as "Can you hear?" by the japanese singer "CLEAR" . You can find the song on RUclips =)
Quick question: is C the groin/inner leg measurement? I'm a little confused.
Thanks for the many attempts at this video. I'll let you know if it works for me.
