What the hell was the negotiator thinking, bringing the whole reason the man was upset enough to threaten his baby with a knife (his wife, mother of his child) out to confront him? That could ONLY have gone badly. One, it's going to enrage him more, two, she's going to FREAK out watching her baby be threatened like that and now you have to restrain mom and reason with dad. Very odd choice, unless they didn't know why he was spun up.

Just like Sheriff John Bunnell (Ret.) said, if you run, you could lose everything. Said words ring true for the donkeys that chose to run. When human lives are at stake in a hostage situation, police always have a sharpshooter on standby in case negotiations with the suspect break down and the suspect tries to flee the scene with the hostage. Sharpshooters need to be precise and accurate, otherwise the suspect may escape and instigate a rolling hostage situation in which negotiations are null and police have to resort to brute force to bring the suspect to justice and free the hostage. Such incidents can happen anywhere anytime. It's just a matter of when, where, why, what, who, and how.

They may not have known, or he might have tricked the boy into trusting him, since the boy might be too young to really understand that his own uncle was a "bad guy". It's possible the parents may have been asleep or doing something elsewhere in the house when the uncle showed up and tricked the boy into letting him in or coming outside and getting in the car with him.
That, or he may have managed to convince his relatives that he was "cured" and didn't have those sorts of urges anymore.

He puts in for rank/orders to a new base, they will see it. So yeah. The biker did screw up his career record just by running.
