  • Hello everyone,
Welcome to my new book review. Okay, I've NEARLY finished War & Peace but this weekend I wanted to read something different so tried my hand at Dostoyevsky. Notes From Underground was a short but surprising read that packed a punch. Certainly, I started crying at the end of of it. A frustrating, annoying and awful man - yet I would say someone with a strong sense of self awareness - but also not having any - (you need to read the book to realise is that he doesn't learn - or does he?) and someone who needs a good shake to stir them out of their constant thinking, assuming, and believing they are better than others.
A brilliant read and certainly, I would say one of the best books I have read in my life - and in 2023.

The part in this novella when Liza tells the underground man that he’s talking like he’s in a book, and his whole confidence completely crumbles, it’s one of my favorite book moments ever

It is truly a great short novel. An ideal 'introduction' text for folk new to the author. (Yes, I mean grumpy teenage students.)

Your thumbnail caught my eye because Catcher in the Rye is my favorite novel. I’ve ordered this one and can’t wait to read it.

I'd love to reread this soon. My copy is in a Norton anthology so it minuscule print on onionskin thin paper, so I'd rather forebear until I can get a friendlier copy. Thanks for whetting my appetite.

My english is not so good but i can tell you very good review.
Because I love Dostoevsky I watched many reviews on youtube on that book , and the funniest but in the same time very serius because of psyhology of modern man comes from one american guy who said that Notes From Underground is the "schoolshooter manifesto from 19.century".😁

Thank you for watching and sharing your feedback here. I appreciate that. Oh my, I have not heard this reviewer nor would ever say that the book is a manifesto that results in the most abhorred act of senseless violence.

I think you and he are correct. Some of the school shooters are being diagnosed with "autistic psychopathy". I do not think autistic psychopathy a person is born with. Autistic children are awkward and delightful. They are vulnerable. They get ignored or bullied, almost never befriended. As a result, some of them grow up to be school shooters. Dostoevsky would probably agree 100%!

Really amazing novel. I've red it in French. The manner how Raskolnikof sees things is philosophical...

Wow. That’s my aspiration to read it (well, anything) in French. It’s still slow going for me in that language.
