Thanks Hans! I don't know how many people are following along with the calendar themselves. Hopefully some. But I'm glad people are getting something out of the series 👍

Dang, good call my friend. I've not had the Caol Ila 18 for a while now. It was only a few years ago that you could buy independent craft bottlings for the same price and they were more my cup of tea.

Thanks WT! There are some real gems at proper ABVs in the Caol Ila IB offerings. Maybe not bargains like they used to be as you say but I'm looking forward to checking some of them out soon 👍

Thanks! Just don't expect too many more to go that well 😀 I think Caol Ila has a very distinctive profile and I also had the advantage that the 18 is very different to the 25. Very much an educated guess with a healthy amount of luck 😉

Great guess, but I’m impressed you got the ABV just off the nose 👃 great work.

ABV is always easier to get by taste but it's still fun to have an early guess from the nose 😀

Fantastic idea! And well done on guessing correctly. Personally I adore the 12yr but it always bugs me with the CF and slightly low ABV so much so I tend to try and buy Indies of Caol Ila before the official bottlings. Oh, if only they listened to the consumer..

I love Caol Ila 12 too. Very good value Islay Scotch that doesn't get the credit it deserves. With prices going up at the more prestigious distilleries I feel that the future of Islay belongs to the likes of Caol Ila, Bunnahabhain, Kilchoman and Port Charlotte. The ABVs of Caol Ila does annoy me too though. I think it's one of the rare distilleries that can still get the job done at 43%... but it would be infinitely better at 46%+... Cheers!

sidd here, i do have this sample so i am up and running and in the game now
i am thinking your clue for pinpointing this one was the colour and correctly identifying the abv.
my thoughts were the 18yo was heavier and darker to most of he caol ilas i have had before. it is very powerful in delivering the flavours but becomes creamier once the palate has got over the shock , really enjoyable to nose. its islaytastic with lemony citrus smoke all defined sharply.
not a surprise to me you got one spot on as you have the whisky knowledge skills and are a good critical thinker, so far your calendar is going exceedingly well on your part.

Hi Sidd. Thanks for the kind words. The 43% ABV definitely helps narrow it down when you know it's something old. I really like the way that Caol Ila retains lots of the juicy, lemony malt notes and the smokiness even at 18yrs. Quite rare IMHO. Caol Ila 25, which is also very good, doesn't hold onto those notes anywhere near as much as this. Hopefully the calendar will continue with some more drams of this calibre!
