What a strange band. Drummer looks like your uncle, chain smoking on drums, lead singer standing with his hands in his pockets, great bassist and an escaped lunatic who'se somehow made it on stage pulling mad faces and pointing out other loonies in the crowd. What a show and what a tune, best thing I've seen all year, new to me. Its never too late to discover quality.
They’ve been doing this since 1973. Got their 1st big break in 1977 opening for KISS, then went to Japan in April 1978 and the rest is history!!!!!!!!! Still touring today in 2021
@@bartonpercival2147 I'd seen and heard about them many times but never actually listened. Then about six weeks ago I was listening to a bit of Ted Nugent and they were in a suggested list. At the last second I thought I'd have a look. What a surprise, a nice one for a change. Just shows, just when you think you've seen it all, up pops an eye-opener.
@@paulburns1333 Rick Nielsen (the Guitar player that wears the baseball cap) is a great writer of songs. They have such a large catalog of music, that it’s such a crime to only listen to their radio hits. Their early stuff off their 1st two albums is truly incredible. The thing that attracted me to the band wasn’t only their appearance or their songs, but their big powerful sound on albums and of course at live concerts. You have the goofy looking guitar player, and the loud big beat of the drummer, then you have the bass player that plays a 12 string bass that sounds like a jet airplane taking off, and finally the lead singer that seems to have a thousand different voices. Great rock & roll band that deserved to make it into the RRHOF!!!!!!!!
You're description nailed it! Welcome to the world of Cheap Trick.
@@antoniosoul welcome brother
Hearing "Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace" live is one of the reasons Cheap Trick will never quit making me happy.
Right on!! Just love it! 😁
In a word, Budokan is "magical." The production and engineering are quite possibly the best live sound that was recorded in the late 70s
That is what I thought too until I read that some of it specifically Tom Petersons bass parts were re-recorded in a studio later.
@@mr.logicpants2835 From what I've gathered, Tom's bass was live on every single track except for Goodnight which was very obviously rerecorded on his Thunderbird. Everything else, at least to my knowledge, was live.
@@hueyj1975 Yeah that could be. I don't remember the article I read that stated otherwise or I would put a link to it. I can say for sure that I have seen Cheap Trick live and they are definitely one of the greatest live bands EVER!
My introduction to Cheap Trick came via Velvet Revolver's cover of Surrender (RIP Scott Weiland). So much music to listen to and so many recorded live shows to enjoy! Great band.
@@mr.logicpants2835 Studio overdubbing on live albums was a common thing in the 1970s as recording technology wasn't what it is now. The first two Kiss 'Alive' albums were so full of it, (esp the first one) that its remarked that they were more studio creations then actual live albums.
What a tone on that 12-string bass! I own one of those because of Tom Petersson.
Me too. Which one do you own?
Sweet!!!
Robin Zander has been one of my rock n roll heroes for over 40 years and counting for a reason.
I actually met them once in Delaware and man were they cool and gracious about their popularity.
I also met Robin Zander. It was 1999, and I am 18 and drunk at the Rainbow Bar & Grill on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood (my nine year older brother was a regular, so of course his brother was also of age they figured). As I said, I am drunk at the bar, and see Robin and I’m like “I gotta go talk to him!” So I did. He was so much taller than me (I’m 5’7”), I just stared up at him and told him how big a fan I was. He shook my hand and thanked me for telling him that.
The next day, I asked my brother if I did meet Robin Zander or did I tell a random blond haired guy I was a big fan of his, and my brother said that was indeed him.
Best fucking rock band you've ever seen. Chills.
Young Robin is so damn talented. So damn good.
Still is. So his his son! The young Robin.
No wonder they went crazy ….?! The musical build up then you hear that voice ! RZ one of the greatest vocalists in Rock n Roll history ! Nuff said
Cheap Trick are great and what makes them unique is that they DON’T look like every other band. They each wanted to be themselves and it worked great because that’s makes you shine-being yourself and letting your band mates to do the same! They are the most original band in history. Robin Zander wearing his white suits and singing like a guy three times his size. Gorgeous. Tom Petersson maker of the first 12 String Bass and plays with such energy and brilliance. Also Gorgeous always smiling and having fun! That’s what it’s about. Rick Niellson great underrated guitarist with his two, three and five neck guitar, high energy, having fun! Bun E. Carlos (Carlson) from South America. Great layed back drummer doing his thing, and I’m glad he does. They’re unique and terrific together and seeing them live and having Robin singing to your 14 yr. old self (and 18 yr. old sister) 🎵“Would you like to go to heaven tonight? 🎶” was sweet. First concert and they still have me running around the house singing and acting a fool. Thank God. Will always be a huge fan of these amazing musicians and they uniqueness, craziness and talent ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️🎤🎸💋🎼🎙🥁🎵🎶🥰
Beautiful tribute ~ I agree thoroughly.
But that bass intro though...!
Sound like a friggin jet airplane taking off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😆👍👍👍
Oh my god, they were just babies.
(I'm so old, every time I see old videos, I'm shocked at how young & gorgeous everyone looked)
I love how they end this song and oh candy. No cheap fade out, a fucking proper end to a ripper song.
I def. do the the trick walk to this song ! Please bring bun E. Back ! My fav band since 1978 but never saw them live ! WTF
First album I ever bought changed my life. i was 12, 55 today. just played the album, feels like the first time. TY
And my first ever concert - Aragon Ballroom in Chicago - and I’m also 55! lol
Me too. I was so hooked I got the first five studio albums back in the day and still have them!
My all time favorite band. This is one of my favorite performances by Robin. Love them!
I love Robins Voice emmensly ♥️🤗🤗🤗This Song simply Rocks
I cannot help to tell how I met Cheap Trick in Delaware before meet and greets were a thing (expensive as well). I was able to get a Budokan photo autographed by the band. I have a pic of me standing next to Rick Nielsen and Robin Zander looking like a roadie in ripped jeans and a leather jacket. It was so wild to meet my favorite band. I went wild watching them inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame.
Was that at one of the two Kahunaville shows in the mid-90s by any chance? We just walked backstage at both of those, and Rick signed a few of my Hamers.
@@cmatthes I am not sure what Kahunaville is and if it is or was on the East Coast. The name of the bar escapes me, it was in Delaware and looked like someone's basement. The merch counter was a folding table. I met Rick, Robin and Tom. All autographed a photo for me, (even though Bun E. would not come out). I was right up front for the concert and even though it was crowded my picture survived.
@@geo386 - Kahunaville was in Wilmington, Delaware, and the inside stage could have passed for a dark basement. There weren’t a lot of options in the State back then…Stone Balloon in Newark, maybe, but it would depend on the year you saw them.
@@cmatthes Ohmigosh, that's it, The Stone Balloon. I guess my memory isn't too bad. The concert was on April 24 or 25, 1991. Wow, you must have jogged my melon.
Oh yes the Cheap Trick that I grew up on. Maybe grew old but never grew up.😱
Can't take my eyes off of Robin.
Cheap Trick is not just a bubble gum band but a intelligent bubble gum. They've got something twisted and I love it.
One of my all-time favorite live performances of any song by any band.
I see why. Cheap trick are brilliant 😮
Hard to believe this is a cover song...Cheap Trick owns it!!!
its a terrible cover lol
robin all dressed up and top of his game, great management
This song's the perfect vehicle to showcase the unique talents of each member of America's greatest rock band.
Well stated!
Wild full throated deluvery here-- cant imagine he goes for it in the middle of a set? Very strong.
Heard this song on Terry Reid’s 1st album and I fell in love with him/it… he wrote it. His vocals (way back when) and guitar playing are top notch and impeccable. I’ve never heard this version until now and was kinda wincing waiting for the vocals but found this whole cover AMAZING!!! I knew Robin was a great singer but MAN!!!!
My first concert 1983 wings stadium Kalamazoo mich. cheap trick aldonova and saxon, still one of the best shows I've ever seen, I think it was alice cooper who called cheap trick america's house band totally agree.
I live really close to wings. Is this the Jeff I worked with at Aunt Millie's lol- I did see cheap Trick there in 1989
The greatest of all CT numbers …
This great band doing what they did best, kickin out the jams
with super talent and great power..one of the best rockin bands
of that amazing time in the 70s and after that time as well..thanks
Look at how lovely they all were! One of my all time favorite songs.
Cheap trick has a great sound exiting
Love them. Saw them twice. Wish it was more.
How fabulous, had the first 2 albums by 1980 and another band who made a Live album of their best years and then headed MOR. Frampton, Seger, REO, Foghat...
Mr. Tom Peterson on the bass
Un des groupes de rock les plus méconnus et sous estimés!Any french fan here?
Cc ,présent lol !mon groupe préféré ,deja vu à plusieurs reprises live .Carte de membre 923 :)
PERFECTION!
Majestic!
That 12 string bass is fucking awesome.
This song is a favorite for sure!!
Loved them since In Color album at 15 in ‘77….eventually got my favorite album of theirs the debut amazing Cheap Trick album and have most of them now 🔥🖤
Seeing them in a week for the third time this year…have seen them many times over the years🤗🏁they always have a changed up setlist except the main hits which are awesome too, so you get to hear so much music
and they’re still as incredible Live as ever!!!
Truly mega talented musicians, sweetheart guys now with Rick’s son Daxx on the drums and Robin’s son Robin Taylor plays all the instruments, but currently guitar and has his own amazing debut album out called The Distance🙌..the talent and legacy go on ✨🖤🏁🔥
El gran Tom Petersson, con ese bajo de 12 cuerdas de su invención, magico el sonido, saludos desde 🇲🇽 a los aficionados del truco barato. ✌️
I love this song !
Babies!
Do Best 5stars rock on.)
on the top of the world waou!!!!!!!
It wasn't easy it was hard as hell
Wow, this particular song live is crazy! Idk how to explain it... I guess the 12-string bass does its thing!
Saw Cheap Trick in 1977/78 opening for Queen…I believe they opened their Show with this Song….
Perfect!
Happy birthday Tom!
Love this band
great
もうすぐ会える♥♥♥♥
Fucking awesome
Great example of a cover being superior to the original.
All their covers are better than the originals. Just listen to them do Day Tripper, California man, Don't be cruel. The in crowd. I could go on and on!!!!!!!!
This was not on the live from Budokan cassette I got as a teen. What else have I been missing out on?
Dan Hardisty they have released a complete set of the Budokan concerts. The complete set includes 9 additional songs from the two nights that weren’t on the original album. You can also get the concert on DVD or Blu-ray too
@@jlarrybrewer1149 Didn't know this,I have the original album.I will check out the Dvd
😸
@Dan Hardisty , their first album "Cheap Trick" was, in my opinion, their best. This song is on that album. I do love this album also. I saw them when they were on tour promoting the "Budokan" album. Terrific!
@Dan Hardisty , check out Mandocello with Billy Corgan. ruclips.net/video/m7pJLEwc8Ro/видео.html
Edit: And I'm not at all a fan of "power ballads". There are only three that I like. "Mama, I'm Coming Home", "Silent Lucidity", and this "Mandocello". Well, there you go.
@@missmaam792 I agree. That first album is raw & brutal! Every songs killer.
Did anyone realize this is a Terry Reid cover?😮
Tom on 12 string bass. How the fuck do you play that?
Carefully
Rather carefully
They're playing Irving Plaza in NY soon .
Without Bunny .
Better Better hurry
Look up the original by Terry Reid which is much different but also great. They had some pretty amazing choices of covers in the early days
Inspired by a true great Terry Reid!
Favorite CT song, ever. Robin's voice!
What a great cover and Robin, what a voice! Forever one of fav tune from CP.
After all these years and this has become one of my favourite Cheap Trick songs
And it’s a Terry Reid cover!
Tom rocking the bass, what a sight!
Me : takes a picture
Man The same thing happens to me when I start rocking the 12 string. BUT .... Mine is a little different than his. It's a CHEAP Chinese made A/E 12 string that is almost never in tune. I can do this, most just don't wanna hear it.
@@sparkyguitar0058 I bet you can still get some "god-like" tones from that sucker!
I'm glad there was so much of him at the beginning, he doesn't get enough love!
@@St4r_Z0mb13 Yup, a truly amazing & talented musician
Tom is a total babe
Yes, Tom... the savagely handsome Tom ❤
FINALLY SOMEONE SAYS IT!!!
Fr, omg, total babe 💜
Oh my gosh, when Robin walk in and Rick tips his hat to him, it’s the best😂😂😂😂
That
Was
Incredible
1-29-2024 and Cheap Trick is still going strong!
Tom and Robin have the best smiles 💜
I saw the first two versions.of.this.song by reid and milk, and i must say that this one done by CT is definitely the best. ❤ love u guys: robin tom rick bun
Robin is hot
Frampton Comes Alive is up there but Budokan is my favorite.
I love this band and and got their boxset and I am stuck on this cd and I downloaded it on my you tube. I can't stop listening to it to move on to the next cds!! It sounds better with each play.
The fucking greatest band EVER!
I don't believe anyone has mentioned this song was written by the great British Folk Soul Rock Terry Reid, who has recently been play with Joe Perry and Johnny Depp.
Reid was the first Page's choice to be the singer of led Zeppelin. Declined it (he actually had his own success) but strongly suggested ...Plant to jimmy Page... There are several videos on RUclips reuniting cheap trick and Terry Reid.
They finally showed the girls taking pictures
Over the edge movie intro
When it’s In 2x speed the crowd screams faster than ever
Sheesh
*My 16 year old self saw these guys (with the Runaways!!) a year after this and it was effing mind blowing!! Love Cheap Trick❤*
I am commenting #BringBackDislikes on every unique RUclips video that I watch for the rest of 2024, regardless of if I actually dislike the video or not. This is video 1957.
Love them every time I've seen them
