Gannis is a great player. There's no doubt about that. But in all of these highlights where he drives past would be defenders for easy dunks or layups, it's obvious that no one in these hightlights are playing actual defense against him. He makes one cross dribble, the defender does not move his feet but instead waves at Giannis meekly as he goes by. He dunks. No one contests any of these scoring chances in the video we see. I am a Celtics fan. ALL five of our starters play defense, and even a couple of our bench players do too. Playing defense means you have to have the physical commitment of moving your feet so that your body is always in front of your opponent. Okay, Giannis is super elite in athleticism. So in that case, if you are going to get beat off the dribble, you shade him to your weak side help so that when he beats you, there is another body in his way so that he doesn't cruise in for that dunk. Am I saying the Celtics could hold Giannis to 20 points? Of course not. He is so good that if he is on, he will get his 35 or 40 against any defense thrown against him. But even if he does get 40, you have to make him sweat for it, use huge energy for it. Superstars like him can hardly be stopped, but you can at least make him tired. Then, at the other end, you have to go right at him, making him use more energy, making him jump, and more importantly, getting him to pick up fouls. That's what you try to do with EVERY NBA superstar. You can't stop them, but you have to at least make it hard for them. The guys in this video are playing matador defense.
