I AM IN THE PROCESS OF REBUILDING MINE NOW. I AM A BACKYARD MACHINIST, AND DON'T HAVE THE SLIGHTEST IDEA WHAT I'M DOING. YOUR VIDEO IS A GREAT HELP. THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME.
Speed Selector makes variable speed pulleys that replace the Reeves, Hi-Lo pulleys and TB Woods that went out of business or got bought. Most of the pulleys are in stock or Speed Selector will custom make if needed. They have an actual engineer department who were very helpful.
Hi Darren, really great instruction video for all us backyard novice machinists. Is it common for the head spindle shaft bearings to fail. The reason I ask is because my mill head spindle feels seized and I am about to start a teardown to investigate. I would appreciate any input from you please. I was thinking of starting by pulling the head spindle shaft out first before tearing the head assembly down. regards from Australia
Hi Gordon yep the taking the spindle out is easy just release the locking grub screw and then unscrew the bottom cap (which can be very tight) - then knock the spindle out from the top the bearings are all available and fairly straight forward to fit just make you sure the bottom 2 are a match pair. If you need any help with the sizes just give me a call +44 151 608 8666 - web site is www.gtprecision.co.uk
Recently I've been having a lot of trouble with a alliant mill that seems to basically lock up when you first turn it on. We found we can avoid this if we turn the speed up on the vari drive before turning it on (it doesn't seem to matter what the speed is, it locks up almost everytime we go to turn it on. We've torn the head apart to the back gear belt and the shaft with the bottom vari pulley wobbles, but the bearing seems smooth and has minimal play. Could this be the source of the spindle locking up? The brakes are fine and everything spins freely below the back gears.
