  • Hey everyone today I thought I start the new Year on my channel by talking about the Site to Site VPN process, the equipment you need, how it works and how you can get in touch with me to set this up. This is the best way to work remotely abroad without your employer knowing as you don’t have to install any software on your company computer and you can work abroad almost virtually undetected. I’ve used this technique for 3 years now and I’ve even worked for two companies at once, companies that work with HIPPA data, government laptops and startups and it’s been a breeze since then. If you’re trying to work abroad and not tell your company, boss or IT department and work in stealth, this is the safest option for 100% remote workers to stay abroad undetected.
    Need to use your home IP address while you work abroad ? Schedule a consultation with me below:

    Question, I’ve got a new job opportunity. 95% remote with little presence in the US. Anything in person would be planned weeks ahead. Since I have dual citizenship (Panama) I’m thinking it’s a great opportunity to move back to Panama and save money even though they require you to be in the US (location hidden by site to site VPN).
    BUT, I’m torn between that and Mexico. MX seems like an option because of the simple residency requirements. And MX offers ease of access to US if they did need me to travel back to the states and it’s cheaper than Panama. Thoughts?

    My issue is that certain countries in which my company does not have business in, access to outlook for example, is blocked. Will using the router and connecting it to the VPN be able to bypass that? Or would I have to do the entire home set up as well, I don’t trust that if I leave it home it’ll be untouched.

    • @RockyinReelTime
      @RockyinReelTime  5 месяцев назад

      There’s a work around for bypassing VPN blocks in certain countries. You can certainly use a VPN connection with the router but it’s better for personal use and not working abroad. The two router setup is the safest if you want to work abroad and go virtually undetected. I suggest finding a trusted family or friend that won’t touch the Flint

      Yes you can have multiple devices connected to this. While you’re abroad however, you’re limited to the upload speed you have at home. Your download speed abroad is what your upload speed is at home. So if you want more devices or a lot, then make sure to have very fast upload speed at home. I recommend at least 150Mbps if you want to have 7+ devices connected to it but if you want just 2-3 maybe 4, 35-50Mbps of upload speed should be fine

    • @RockyinReelTime
      @RockyinReelTime  5 месяцев назад +1

      Depending on your company’s security policies they’ll still see that your using an VPN because when they look at the info regarding your connection, your ISP won’t be a consumer ISP, but some other company that’s known for providing servers or services to VPN companies. A GL.iNet router + Nord is good for personal use but not for work. Just get two GL.iNet routers and create a Site to Site VPN connection

    Great Video! I went to check my internet speed. It looks like the scale is out of 100. Can you expand on the recommendations at 2:18 in the video?

    • @RockyinReelTime
      @RockyinReelTime  4 месяца назад +1

      Basically the upload speed of the ISP router(your Verizon, Spectrum, At&T etc) to which the server is connected is crucial in a Site-to-Site VPN setup with two GL.iNet routers because it determines the maximum speed at which data can be sent from the server(the Flint w/ 4 antennas) to the remote site (the Beryl that you take with you). This is important for ensuring efficient and smooth communication between sites, especially for applications that require real-time data transmission or large file transfers. A higher upload speed will significantly enhance your performance, reduce latency, and improve the overall user experience by allowing quicker access to resources hosted at the server's site. Conversely, a lower upload speed can become a bottleneck, limiting the effectiveness of the VPN connection and potentially causing delays or disruptions in data flow between the two sites. Usually to work abroad I found that most people that are just sending emails, reporting, Excel, coding, streaming RUclips videos and video calls on Zoom and Teams are good with an upload speed of a bare minimum of 30Mbps. Thus faster upload speed at home (where Flint is connected)= faster download speed abroad (where you use travel routers)

    • @Elia268
      @Elia268 4 месяца назад

      With 30mbps with the IPS, would this cause issues with latency with VOIP calls? I work at a call centre type of job and we use voip. I’m concerned about the latency. Thanks for your content.

Also, if you need to make calls/texts, how do you use your "abroad phone" to make it seem like your home phone is sending them? Thanks in advance!

    • @RockyinReelTime
      @RockyinReelTime  4 месяца назад +1

      Hi Basam! To answer your question, I tell clients with company phones to keep it on airlplane mode and only turn on Wi-Fi and remain connected to the travel router if they need to take it on a trip. Also If you have an iPhone as your company phone as well as personal, you can sign into your iCloud account on your company phone, adjust call settings to forward a call from phone 1 to 2 and when you receive a call on your company phone, it'll be forwarded to your personal. So you can theoretically leave your company phone at home while taking your personal. I believe the newer iOS updates allow for this.

    • @pr0dagy
      @pr0dagy 4 месяца назад

      Thanks Rocky. It seems safer to keep the company phone at your home country instead of taking it with you and keeping it on airplane mode. If it's on airplane mode, texts and calls would not be possible unless you are roaming then you would have to explain to your manager why you were charged a million dollars in roaming fees 😂. Need to research the "leave at home" option more. Thanks!

    This is awesome. I didn’t know about this. I only knew of VPNs. My company had its own VPN…and when I’d visit an IP address finder, it wouldn’t display my ip address nor my Internet provider… 🤔 it was blank. My company also had an offshore team in India 🤔

    • @RockyinReelTime
      @RockyinReelTime  6 месяцев назад +3

      Hey! Most likely, your company's VPN might provide a high level of anonymity, not even allowing IP address finder websites to detect the VPN's IP address. Also advanced VPN configurations can block scripts or requests that try to detect your IP address. When you use the solution I speak of in the video though, you don't have to download any software and you can use your own IP address by using the routers to rerout the request. Thus it appears as if you're working from home. Just don't ever use your work computer to connect to a network while abroad, always make sure to connect yo your router while traveling or in another country.

    I will definitely be trying this out. I have a house that's being rented out, and I trust the tenant to not mess with this after I've set it up. I plan to get a regular remote call center job because I have WFH phone experience already, and then try it over a long weekend in Mexico, being that it's the closest, cheapest place to test things out. The Flint acts as a server you connect to, thus making this whole setup your own VPN. If you use just the travel router you nee to use OpenVPN and use a 3rd party VPN which is still very detectable because you'd be using Nord's servers for example and many of their IPs are blacklisted because they are known by many commercial firewalls

    • @RockyinReelTime
      @RockyinReelTime  5 месяцев назад +2

      You can change your location settings in your computer and turn that off if you have admin access assuming you’re speaking about your work laptop. If you can’t and your company has installed monitoring tools on your laptop, they might have the ability to access your location from directly inside the device. So that means even with the site to site VPN even though your traffic appears to be coming from the states, they can use these monitoring tools to see the actual location of the laptop. It’s all a case by case basis as all companies handle security differently. This is just an extra level of protection should you want to work abroad without your company’s knowledge. I always advise to ask first or inquire with HR about the rules surrounding this, but if you’re going to do it anyway get this extra level of protection first.

What’s the model of your spectrum router ? You’ve missed a step or likely have done something wrong. I haven’t encountered a Spectrum router that doesn’t allow you to do port forwarding yet, so yours likely does. Also how are you testing this? If you’re testing at home you’re going to always see your home IP address when connected to the travel router, you must test in a different location or at least use a hotspot. Testing at home will always give you the same IP address and make it look like you’ve configured it correctly.

    Does that mean we should replace the ISP router with the flint (not sure my friend will agree to that), or will it work if u set it up at a Repeater in their house and I connect to the Flint Repeater using the Travel Router?
    Thanks!!

    • @RockyinReelTime
      @RockyinReelTime  2 месяца назад +1

      That means you plug it into your ISP router. There’s Ethernet ports behind it and that’s where you connect it to, no need to change routers, it’s just a device that stays powered on and connected so it can send requests through the ISP router. Think of it like this, while you have your travel router abroad, you make a network request to let’s say google.com or your company’s resources. Next the request goes to the Flint, which sends it to your ISP router, and it goes out into the world using your friend or family member’s IP address and all the network information of the ISP router it’s connected to, thus making it seem as if you’re still home in the states. I hope that answers your question

    Hi Rocky I enjoyed your video some said it was a little bit too long but I thought it was right on point I'm a slow learner... Anyways the only question I had is you say plug the travel router in to the router at the Airbnb that you're staying at What if you're staying at a hotel that has Wi-Fi that's open or like it up Starbucks where it's an open Wi-Fi Do you still have to plug your computer into that or will it pick up the Wi-Fi signal. The second comment that I would have is that I wish instead of giving us all these different options you would just say I like this router and it like this and I like this cable it sort of like going to McDonald's and having a number four combo which you believe is the best of the best because I think people that are traveling abroad aren't really caring about $100 one way or another for example I would pick two of the travel modems up just in case one got misplaced damaged or lost I would have a backup because if I'm remote and that modem goes down it may take a week or longer to replace that but if I have it I can keep moving and order another one concurrently so that extra hundred or $200 expense would be worth it to me to have the assurance that I would have eminemity and not have to jump on and log on and take the risk that my system is going to be identified as being out of the country but after reviewing what you said I think I got it and this is a better option than with Norton or one of the other software VPNs

    • @RockyinReelTime
      @RockyinReelTime  5 месяцев назад +1

      If you're going to work from a hotel or some other public Wi-Fi, you need to log into the router's admin page and select Wi-Fi repeater and log into the Starbucks/hotel Wi-Fi and it'll use that signal to create a secure VPN tunnel with your router in the States and use your home IP. I'm not understanding your second question, the routers I recommend will work for most people's use cases. I recommended the GL-AX1800 as the home server because it can transmit lots of data and fast and it also has Wi-Fi 6, I also recommend the GL-MT3000 or AXT-1800 which are good as the client (the router you take with you). I only gave two options for the travel router to take with you and either one is an excellent choice. Your other question/comment is quite confusing

    • @brucehickman5624
      @brucehickman5624 3 месяца назад

      Rocky, Sorry if my second part of my question was confusing I just took the options that you had suggested and just got the slate AX mobile router but I have two questions The first one is as it relates to the home setup Can it be ran by Wi-Fi as well or do you need to connect by I certainly have the room at home so that's not a problem but it just popped up initially Wi-Fi and it's immediately shows me using that at my computer but if it would be better to use the ethernet I could use that so my question is I don't know the difference between wham and lan or whatever I'm sorry I'm not looking at the back of the box at this moment but which one do you plug the ethernet into and then into the stationary device My second question is when you using the mobile router you take an Ethernet cord from the mobile router and which one do you put it in there again Is it the win or the land and does that it's in that cable go into your computer and it Wi-Fi picks up the signal from the coffee shop or your Airbnb or is that ethernet cord directly to the Airbnb router if it's available or the coffee shop a router if it's available and then it just works off of the Wi-Fi but do you still run an ethernet cable to the mobile device to your actual laptop. Sorry for the long message

      Using a GL.iNet router for a site-to-site VPN setup should not significantly slow down your home Wi-Fi for other users, especially if your internet plan has sufficient bandwidth to support multiple users. However, prioritizing VPN traffic can affect other internet activities, so it’s wise to ensure your home internet speed can accommodate both your VPN needs and regular usage. If needed, adjusting Quality of Service (QoS) settings can help manage bandwidth distribution more effectively. I can do all of this for you, should you need and ensure your speeds abroad are adequate for remote work and the people at home are unaffected.

    • @RockyinReelTime
      @RockyinReelTime  4 месяца назад

      Hi to answer your question, to fix the mismatch between your DDNS domain's IP and your device's WAN IP, it's likely because your ISP is using something called Carrier-Grade NAT, which basically means you don't get a direct public IP for your router. A simple workaround is to ask your ISP for a public IP, though they might charge extra for it. If that's not an option, using the VPN features on your GL.iNet routers can help you get around this by creating a secure tunnel between your sites. Just double-check your DDNS settings in your router to make sure everything's up to date.

    Instead of using a “flint” can I create virtual machine with microsoft azure? Is that the same thing?

    • @RockyinReelTime
      @RockyinReelTime  Месяц назад +1

      Yes you can ! To set up a site-to-site VPN connection using a VM in Microsoft Azure, create and configure the VM with a static public IP, install and set up the VPN server software (like WireGuard), then ensure Azure Network Security Group settings allow VPN traffic. Next you need to configure the GL.iNet travel router as the VPN client with the server's details, and test the VPN connection to ensure proper routing and connectivity. So it’s possible yeah, but you need to be a bit more on the technical side to do this on a cloud dashboard. It’s also achievable with AWS

    One thing that needs to be mentioned is that your home isp needs to provide a Static IP address.

    • @RockyinReelTime
      @RockyinReelTime  2 месяца назад +2

      No you don’t “need” a static IP address, although it may be helpful. In the GL.iNet router settings you simply you just make sure to activate Dynamic DNS. If your job needs to whitelist your IP address for some sort of security purposes then yes, you’ll need a static IP, but if you don’t which is 99% of people I help set up, then Dynamic DNS will do just fine.
