Just a few years ago I did the San Juan. GREAT river. I loved it. I took 9 days,, some rough weather,, late March I think,, March 28th launch? The wind. Nearly every afternoon,, nearly always upstream. The trick with western rivers is,,, drum-roll please,, Pack everything right after dinner,, except the sleeping gear, and push off in the morning at or before sunrise. (Take time to heat some water for coffee,, OF COURSE.) But eat breakfast as you float, Cliff bars (oo yuck) , apple, orange, etc. Because,, you want to do your traveling before noon. Leave early and you can have covered your 10 or 20 miles by noon. NOW make camp, have lunch, hike, explore, if you are there at noon,, you have lots of time,,,, because,, the winds spring up in western canyons about noon, and they nearly always are upstream against the current, against the direction of travel. It is easier, faster, instead of short sheeting lunch, short sheet breakfast, huge leisurely dinner. and with no wind,, you cover your miles in 4 hours,, If you paddle against the wind in the afternoon, it takes 6 or 7 hours of paddling. I wanna go with your group. I'll even wear a tutu if I have to.
