I really hope those bowls are temporary!
+Joseph Borges - Darn skippy! In other words... yes.
Big Al's I bought a betta from you and had really great results! Mine was beautiful and I want to get some fancy guppies from you. Maybe some tequilas or galaxys
Big Al's baby betta food?
It's just for show in the video
My 8 year old cousin put 3 betas in a bowl. Not temporary and I wasn’t surprised when she cried 30 minutes later.
Big Al's is a massive company with a huge following, you're practically leading the industry. Why oh WHY would you endorse the idea that betta bowls are okay? Even with daily water changes, to put a betta in an unfiltered, unheated, uncycled bowl is animal cruelty. If I went to the kitten section of Big Als and said "Hey can I put a kitten in a cardboard box for it's entire life?" you wouldn't be like "Well it's not your best option but you can! It won't live as long and it's probably not a good idea but it'll be fine."
I know that this video did try to argue against bowls but even showing a betta in a bowl is just spreading a terrible stereotype.
Unfortunately because its because there is a market for the bowls... I tried to express that bigger is better.
ik thx so much for saying that cuz i was about to type up an essay2
Matthew Beard it's temporary for the video, obviously, their professional on and off the camera
Matthew Beard I had to .
It’s temporary, just for the vid
"Don't over feed your betta because their stomach is as big as their eyeball"
*suddenly remembers that I gave my betta 6 pellets*
Vaniji that is not true
Their stomachs are not as big as their eyes. So your betta fish will be ok.
Vaniji I give mine like 8. And he eats it all. And he's perfectly fine...
Vaniji u and ur Betta are going to be fine
Vaniji is right!
this video was all about your products about betta fish...not much info about betta fish itself😐
yeah it felt very product placement heavy.
my betas one of the happiest fish! it gets a 40 gallon bowfront to itself, with a couple zebra danios n the water condition is mint perfect
Hey Matthew Beard! Thank you for your comment and we absolutely appreciate your concern. As mentioned in the video, and as you acknowledged, we always recommend keeping bettas in a larger aquarium with proper filtration and heating. The idea that bettas can be kept in smaller bowls long-term is a very common one worldwide-- we don't encourage it and strongly suggest larger aquariums-- but if people decide that's how they want to keep their betta, we want to (at the very least) provide simple tips on how to keep it healthy for as long as possible.
We can't say it enough-- IT'S BEST TO KEEP YOUR BETTAS IN AT LEAST A 5-10gal AQUARIUM WITH PROPER HEATING AND FILTRATION! They'll live happier, healthier lives! And ultimately, that's what we all want for our fish!
+Big Al's At last, a fish store that says this instead of the normal "Put it in a cup"
By the way, Zoo Med also do pellets, which seem pretty good, sadly its the only thing my boy eats... apart form snail eggs.
Have you borrowed the name if TOY STORY 2 just wondering
I'm gonna be doing a planted 5 gallon for my future betta fish. My recent one passed away suddenly. RIP Pepper the Veil Tail Betta. But I look forward to providing a proper home for my new fishy friend and plan to stop by my local Big Al's soon to pick up some things.
A real person wouldn´t agree to the concerns of the (obviously way better informed) audience instead of NOT spreading stupid bs in an "information purpose video". Oh, wait, you´re trying to sell something. My bad....
Big Al's Can I put my beta fish in a 20 gallon tank with no other fish in there but him ?
My betta boys are both perfectly happy in my 4ft community tank with sharks, corydoras and danios. They're only terretorial if you don't give them space for their territories. They don't mind most other fish, guppies do tend to annoy mine a bit, so be watchful.
Thank you such a great change to see people who actually know how to properly care for them making videos!!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
My Betta lives in a big tank with Guppies and he is happy and healthy! The guppies have had babies and he just looks at them. lol. Doesn't even try to eat them at all. I've saved Betta fish for years - always feel happy when they get released into a big tank and you can see them stretching out their fins. Such a beautiful, interesting and funny fish.
"You can keep bettas in little bowls like this but it will be a lot of work and be stressful for your fish" so.... in other words you cant, and shouldn't keep them in little bowls...
I have a half moon. [Only one] and I keep him in a five gallon tank with a heater, filter, live plants and those moss balls aka betta buddy's. An even then I will be getting a 10 or 20 gallon for my betta.
I am by far an expert nor do I pretend to be, but you should always strive to get the biggest tank you can for your fish whether you have one or 20 fish..
As for feeding.. I give my betta about 4 pellets twice a day.. and I've had him for over a year and he is great.. so I dont believe in the eyeball theory..
Thank you, i am 12 years old and i am looking for a betta and I didn't know how to keep one!
+Ethan Hellyer - We're happy we can help! Good luck with your betta! When you get it, send us a picture on FB! (facebook.com/bigalspets)
I didn't know what I didn't know about Bettas. Awesome video
my beautiful Betta lives in a nice 5.5 gallon with silk plants as of right now. but soon I am getting him a 10-20 gallons with live plants.
*This channel needs more subscribers*
I have a one gallon tank with four small neon tetras and a female betta. They get along fine and plenty of room to swim.
I am thinking of possibly getting a dumbo betta next year or so when I get some solar panels on my roof (made a family exception because I have five tanks), all fully planted with a more real environment the fish would have in the wild+natural gravels such as Flourite. Iv done some research on the dumbo betta but some reviews say they aren’t the best of swimmers, now yes I know because their Finns but I just hope I get an energetic one that will rise to the top and bottom of the future ten gallon.
Thank you for all your replies I finally have a bigger tank and had my new mail veil tail betta fish.
Hi, is it too bad to disconnected the air pump filter just at night ...say 6 hours? The noise is driving my family nuts and “cant sleep” and the ways to silent it like wrap it in a towel, that ive seen makes me nervous that can start a fire 😭 ( I have 1 betta in a 3 gallon)
Ummmm..... I really really really hope that those fiah bowls are temporary. I have a male crowntail Betta and he lives in a 5 gallon tank right now. Betta's need at least 2.5 gallons MINIMUM!!! no hate but poor fish
It is, she said it in the comments
2.5 minimum is too small 5 minimum is what i have heard
My betta lived for two years. Is that good? Is that short? Do you think I could improve something? (I got my betta from PetSmart, I feed them pelleted food TetraBeta, and he was a Crowntail Betta.)
Rebecca Lowe 2-3 years is good for bettas. :)
Great video. And I understand completely what you meant about the small bowls, that it adds stress for the fish and they WONT live long in them. I did catch that part. Apparently others didn't, but it's alright. Your just saying what you have to about the small bowls to be able to keep the Business going.
Good job on saying betta correctly. Way too many people say it wrong. Than you for easing my OCD. lol
Can you use both bette conditioner and other water conditioner.
Hi! If I have a male betta in a 5.5 gallon tank would it be ok to add other fish and make a small community tank? Great Video!!
+Katie Ellis - 5.5gal may be a bit tight for a community tank with a betta, but ultimately it's your call if you'd like to try. Just be sure, no matter what size of aquarium, to get fish that aren't going to make the betta go into crazy-dominance-fight-kill-win mode!
Is there any way you could make a video for beginners about how to change the water in an aquarium?
+Emily Thigpen Great suggestion!
+Emily Thigpen Just a suggestion ,but do you have any airline for the fish pumps. I have a piece of clear airline about 2 feet in length. I have only 2 small tanks now but used to keep larger. Anyway I put one end in through a hole in the tank lid (like a feeding hole, When I set the cover or lid of the hole down (without forcing shut) it should hold the airline. The other end I let hang into a bucket ( One that I only ever use for my fish stuff) If you suck and quickly remove your mouth before the water end up in it, but let the water carry on syphoning out into the bucket. You can even set the airline to the level of the tank you wish to drain till. Once the water has half filled the bucket ,I usually take out any ornaments and plants that are needing cleaned and also my filter . In the bucket I clean my filter media (sponge or filter pads etc, then with an old tooth brush I have had in boiling water to sterilise I brush clean the ornaments and with an old cloth or something I wipe plant leaves and just anything else from the tank you want cleaned. then continue emptying as much water as you are wanting or needing to change -recommended usually 20% to 25%. I do this at least once every ten days ,some people do it on a 3 day rota other 14 to even 21 days ,depending how good your filter is and what your water parameters say though not everyone has test kits etc. This would be if you are going to get into the hobby seriously or if your budget allows. Anyway I hope this helps and you can always find plenty of channels on RUclips with folk in the hobby willing to show or tell you any questions you may have. We all want to keep our fish the best we can so good luck with yours . Alan
You don't put bettas in bowls!!!
That is a common mistake. But your fish won't have a happy life. Imagine living all your life in a super small bowl!!
This is for show/sale.
I have 2 betta, both i keep with bushy noses, my male is kept with cardnal/neon/ember tetras and a bunch if ghost shrimp and my female is kept with a golden whiteclouds and 2 neon skirt tetras. They both have 15 gallons
You mentioned putting other fish with betas. What fish are compatible with betas?
Thanks for the video! Also wow the lady had really beautiful eyes!
Thank you!
Im Cindy...ty for info..I want to try the prime. the food i have like you said good brand. I have used frozen brine shrimp too. they dont seem to like the dry worms..i have 7 tanks with betta
Thank you so much this really helped me learn a little more info
Are sucker fish good compatible tank mates for betas?
Would you recommend a betta fish for a 20 gallon tank?
Jose Lopez absolutely that is alot of space
Yes, and if you wanted to you could add tank mates in that big of a tank.
yep. That's what mine is in, a 20 gallon long. He also has a little bristlenose as a tankmate.
Would it be ok for a Betta to live in a Marina 360 tank. It's only 2.5 gallons.
no betta fish cannot survive in marine water. i expirienced this
please subscribe my chanell
Love this ❤️ getting a betta as soon as I figure this out! Can you use well water for betta fish? I have well water and I think it would be a little expensive to buying betta water all the time , but if that's how it is ,I will have to do it...
Help please!!!!!!!!
well water is fine as sell as its treated well. id out a bit more water treatment than usual
The bettas are in such small bowls i hope they are temperary
How does betta fish sleep because I just bought my kids a betta fish today and it was fine and moving and swimming around and I just checked on it and now its at the bottom of the tank and not moving
No one ever talks about how much they interact with you. They like attention and like to be talked to. Will follow you as you move around the room. Will eat from your finger and will beg for food. My beta and my cat were great friends. The cat would lay beside his bowl and the fish would get as close as he could to the cat. If the cat put his paw on the bowl the fish would swim to it. Never had another kind of fish respond to me or anything else this way. No he wasn't just hungry I fed him a little more than recommended he just was very aware of things outside his bowl.
i have 55 havaly planted tank with 3 female in my living rook and 10 gallon divided hospital/emergancy tank
for the prime what do you do with it do you just pour a portion into the water?
1-5 drop per gallon
Really good tips and very good advice
ima buy all of theses products
So what if you have a really aggressive betta and you want him to be in the larger tank but all he does is flare at the other fish and chase them trying to bite them?
hi... im planing to keep parrot fish ...plsss can u help me out for tank setup ✌️
DemonDominar D400 - we can definitely help you, however it’s best if you join us for our live Q&As every Wednesday at 1pm EST and ask about tank setup. We can give you real-time advice. If you can, join us this Wednesday!
hello, I have had my betta blck crown tail for a couple month now and he is losing his color on his body. what can I do to fix this problem?
MOst likely it has a illness like fin rot, or your tank is smaller that 1 gallon. If so get a better tank with a heater and filter. The rest of the decor and substrate is up to you.
it is a 2.5 gallon. I just found some meds at pet smart and now it is going away. up grading to a 10 gallon next week
Ur dumbo ear beta is beautyful I've been using prime since I got my beta
can you guys make a vide how to move your fish to a different tank and boll with no additional
dont use a fish bowl. and you can just use a net. the fact you dont know this shows you shouldnt have fish
Is it just me or that I seem to notice that the orange coloured betta seems to have fin rot
i hope you those owner of betta know that they shouldn't keep them in a bowl god bless big al's
I love your betta avatar, very pretty. I love purple! My betta's blue with a black head and tiny bits of red in his fins.
Manny Blackstar Mine lives in a proper 5gal tank with a netrite snail and two albino corydoras and loves of foliage and a gentle current.
Manny Blackstar You can see him on my channel. I have a video of him I took when I put him in his tank when he arrived from the breeder. The corydoras and snail are a very recent addition to his tank.
Manny Blackstar A bowl is really not good for them unless it’s a 2.5 gallon bowl.
so can I use all of the betta stuff
.... buy a real tank with a filter and do some research on it
False lady and I was just liking this channel
+Big Al's do you add conditioner daily
No. Every water change.
...no????
Separate question re:Bettas: What about tankmates? Are females easier to keep in planted community tanks?
Females are less aggressive than males. One lady per 1.5 gallons. Odd numbers seem to work best. Tank mates can vary depending on the personality of the betta male. I recommend wire cloud minnows, fast strong not nippy. And they don't look like a betta. Avoid fish that look like another male.
thats just a myth. females and males are just as agressive. dont keep them with other fish. keep them with snails if anything
What fish can you put in the tank with your betta?
Kevin Leong : I have neon tetras with my female betta. Tetras are good schooling fish.
Ultum Nature Systems 60L: Absolutely the best tank hands down for Betta fish.
This felt more like a commercial than an educational/instructional video...
I like the jumbo plakat, dumbo plakat, and the king sized ones.
2:13, every pet owner that has a betta needs atleast more than a 2.5 gallon.
I hate fighter fish ever since i had this incident where a bought a betta fish and i put it in my tank with other community fish,it usually spent its time alone but after 5 days i found it dead while being sucked by my filter.
Can you use normal water fish conditioner
yes
What about heaters? bettas should be kept at the tropical temp of 78-82 degrees
My betta eats flakes not the pelts is that a problem
I’m new to aquariums, and one of my first fish was a small female betta (labeled as “assorted”, very simple and small but I liked the simplicity she had to her). She died a few days ago, and I’ve been pretty sad and confused every since. I noticed for about 3 days before she passed that she looked very swollen and had a hard time staying upright. Some sites said constipation, but I couldn’t find a sure-fire answer to how to help her. Found her motionless at the bottom of my tank one morning, and despite my attempts to “revive” her (lots of google searching) she never once moved a gill. I fed her, along with my two other mollies, tropical flakes (a medium-sized pinch) once a day, and “betta treats” (dried bloodworms) every other day (only 3-4 worms). Does anyone know what I could’ve done to save her? I’d like the information for the future, as I’d love to own another betta once I feel I am knowledgeable enough to do so.
Why are u keeping them in small glasses?
did u say they live for ten years!!😲😲
+Tashi Shrestha - It's possible, if kept in the right conditions.
I recently lost a 7 year old betta.
The life range of betta fish is from 5 years to 10 years. But of course it is the living condition the betta is in.
Big Al's That's not true. The average betta lives to be three years because the maximum lifespan has more to do with they were bred and how they grew up before being sold.
Something Fishy This Way Swims I wouldn't even say 3 years...I have had 3 bettas (on my third) and kept them in a smaller 5 gallon planted aquarium with perfect conditions...they lasted a little over 2 years each...I'm thinking of upgrading to a 10 gallon for my current Betta.
how long will they live?
We're is tetra safestart that's an awesome product to cycle a tank?
:( discontinued.
I thought this was a tutorial on how to keep fish not kill fish, betas are suppost to have a minimum tank size of at least 3 gallons
One of my betta attacks snails and anything else I dont get permission from it to put in its tank first. All betta are different
I use tetra fin I heard those were good
I just started a tank and it has bubbles all over it is this a problem?
MISSBITTY00 if your Betta making bubbles it means he is happy or healthy.. even though he doest have female Betta around..coz male Betta make bubble when they are ready to breed...u can Google it for info it's not that hard...
If you had just added the water straight from the tap that could be why there's lots of bubbles, but even adding conditioned or aged water to a tank will add bubbles.
foleverto also that's false. They will make bubble nests regardless of health or happiness. It's a myth and all it really says is it's of age to breed.
And do sword tails mollies get along well with guppies and female bettas
+AllFishyLove101 - Yep, for the most part!
I like your Canadian accent in pronouncing "Betta" :). Everywhere in the US, people call them "Bay-tuhs", though it's clearly spelled just like you said it. What's the story?
I think it's the maple syrup and hockey.
+John Daly Just because something is spelled one way, doesn't mean it has to be pronounced that way. Example: Phoenix, bologna..
+Rachel Fajardo check out Noam Chomsky!
lmfao I used to pronounce it as "Beeh-Tah" XD
John Daly beh-tta (the way she says it) is technically the correct pronunciation. But , potato, potahto 🤷🏻♀️
Can I keep my betta in a 3 gallon aquarium?
Yes absolutely. Assuming they have a heater and filter.
Avrilcandy123 Ok, thanks, and yes, they do have a filter and a heater w/ optional light
great video
Not trying to be mean but when you said that a bettas belly was the size of his eye that is a myth. I feed my betta frozen bloodworms every other day
Love the video!
She just said put a lot of plants to rest on and all I see is that betas are put in to small bowls and cups it just not fare
What other fish do well with betas?
Other tropical fish that are not extremly vibrant and colorful, aggressive, need different water parameters, larger and therefore will eat your betta, have long, draping fins similar to a betta, or are a lot faster then a betta when it comes to feeding to a point where the betta can't get any food (bettas are slow due to their long flowing fins, unless it's a female or shorter finned male). Also other bettas (unless it's a female only aquarium).
Completely depends on the Betta. Mine are with Guppy, Platy and Molly.
Oh my god no. Im getting my first betta and have done loads of reasearch but the first thing i came across was that they should be in at least 5 gallons but more is better. Having any fish in a bowl like will makecthem stressed not only is there no where for them to swim but you will not be able to control the ammonia levels in the bowl. Though it is mentioned that nitrite is toxic what isn't said is that it will kill the fish. The bacteria that she mentioned likes to live in filters and fine gravel which you also cant have in a bowl like what was shown. Please please do your research. It not the case that you can put water and a fish in a bowl and feed it every now and then and it will live fine.
I have a 2.5 gallon tank with a twin tail halfmoon betta and a dwarf frog
Twin tails are pretty. I got a Super Delta Betta from a breeder.
I have a 3.5 gallon
I offense or anything but I think they tank needs to be bigger if you have a betta and a dwarf frog in it.
Everyone else's betta tank: *clean*
My betta fish tank: (walks to betta tank) THE HECK ITS ONLY BEEN 2 DAY?! HOW IS YOUR WATER ALREADY *DIRTY* ?!
My tank is a little smaller than a disco ball would that be good?
If its bigger or the same as 2.5 gallons it should be fine👍
+Its.Legit. Ariana not really sure my beta seems to be fine he looks like he is having fun he has a plant and I just got him a rock and he loves swimming threw it
+Aidan Whillans 👍 And If you mean like a regular disco ball it sounds good(make sure that the plants are not too sharp that they will cut the fins) 😜
+Its.Legit. Ariana okay and the disco ball is at least a little bigger than a full blown basket ball
+Aidan Whillans Sounds okay just dont go too crazy with the decor , but I would recommend a bit bigger If you would like for them to live longer!
Can betta fish survive without a airpump??
Yes because betta fish have a labyrinth organ that allows them to take in oxygen from the surface.
I don't know if it would be a good idea keeping them in a big tank but at the same time I'm getting Plattys and the betta might eat the fry witch would be good to keep the tank balanced and not over populated
What do u think I should do😭
Should be okay
Keeping bettas in big tank is definitely a good thing ! And do great in community tank, as long as you only have one betta in it. So enjoy your betta with your plattys ;)
i have my betta in 55 gallon back in the days my uncle has 105 gallon with 5 betta the bigger the tank better
7:03 soooo funny. look in the background when she walks away
My male betta lived in a 45gallon aquarium just for him.
Teamblubz wow!
Teamblubz thats one lucky betta
Teamblubz really
Lucky Betta!
wow for you
What do I do if my betta is nipping it's fin
that probally means it is getting bored flote a table tennis ball in tank.have lots of plant.change the locetion of your decrour
Hey tried to buy the food but your link 404s
Thanks for the heads up! Here is an updated link to Hikari Bio-Gold for Bettas: www.bigalspets.com/hikari-betta-bio-gold.html?sku=18508, however It appears the Dial a Treat is no longer available :(
Big Al's dang okay thanks! I bought several things waiting on it to get here! :)
Jesus Christ! "Here are some Bettas, now buy this shit." is NOT EVERYTHING I need to know about bettas!
Wow So many things to spoil them water babies.
Dita Ch just so you knew bettas can’t live in bowls. Putting them in a 2.5 gallon tank or a 5 gallon tank wouldn’t be spoiling them, it would just be taking proper care of them. Bettas also need a filter and a heater.
Beebo ppsshhh I've been taking care of betas for 30 years and my method works for me and none of them died. I dont use heaters, filters and i only feed them pellets once per week. I put my fishes in a 2 galon tank, i only put dried almond leaves and live plants and i feed them mosquito larvae and daphnia that I cultured myself. I breed them on a shallow container, no heaters and filters and THEY ARE LIVING! I prefer to give them the natural experience, not spoiling them or as you would like to say "caring" for them and putting them in big containers all for themselves and having filters to keep the water clean and stuff. I am a succesful beta breeder and i dont do a lot of unnecessary things, i sell my fishes to pet stores to be bought by other people to become their spoiled pet
all that they are selling is actually beyond spoiling. bettas are really hardy fish, hell their natural environment is pretty dank compared to fish tank water.
if you guys educate us about this, why do u guys keep ur betas in those tiny tiny tiny tanks for months until its purchased?
xOGx-B4L15T4 bettas are usually not in store for more than a week or two at most.
the hope is they will go to a good home. Also many stores have a display with a sump and trickle system, that keeps the water nice and clean.
beckyosborne nope, not for most of stores. I went to my local big als n there were betas in cups. a few months later, i went to purchase some dechlorinator n there r the same betas but dead
xOGx-B4L15T4 Jesus fuckin Christ dude I mean don't make assumptions so fuckin quickly man
xOGx-B4L15T4 .
the Bettas actually get sold out almost weekly. And are water changes on a regular schedule.
Good job!
+Chelsea McFadden Thanks :)
So I just got a 50 gallon for Christmas And I have three bettas The problem is that I don't want to put one In a bowl and I am getting ride of my 10 gallon because it was far to crowded because there was five fish in half of the tank ( I was using dividers 😉) so I decided to move them in to a bigger tank ( my new 50 gallon)So... I need to know what to do I have a dragon tail betta, crown tail and double tail and I can only put one in but I'm scared my fish will get attacked My most aggressive betta is my crown tail and he's for sure going in the extra 5 gallon But than I have my dragon tail he can be aggressive and I have my doubts about putting him inLast I'm left with my double tail He is quite calm but idk if it's a good choice And my two choices are bowels and on tank, go buy one more 5 gallon and the last gets to stay in a bowl Idk what to do and I don't want to spend a lot of money since I still need to buy a filter and I have spent over 200$ on gravel heaters and Decoration
You can get dividers or stick to the side boxes and keep the males separated
+JC's Fish I don't know how your fish would do but there are one or two videos on here with Male Betta's living in the one tank. If you have quite a few rocks and planted areas in your tank for them to hide in or just get some peace you can have male bettas in the same tank. I know everything in your books or people will tell you it can't work but every fish is different. If they have room to get away from each other and as I say somewhere they can quietly slip off to, even from some of the other fish in the tank at times you can try it. Wait until you have an afternoon to yourself and put the two you find calmest in together( Some folk say they have to be youngfish to do this but like I say every fish is different. just sit with your net ready to separate if it does not work. But don't be to hasty they may square up to one another but I have done it and they squared up a couple of times and eventually took less notice of each other. I have also had them where the two fish just seemed as though they were going to sort it out and that was it they had to be separated. If you do try please could you let me know how it turns out . thanks
if you have males the may need to divide the tank but females havaly plant the tank and when i say havaly i mean form top to bottom in half of the tank
My betta and my guppies are fighting in my one gallon. I just have 11 guppies which isn't to much. Help
Hmm maybe too much water.
Maybe not enough space. And guppies might remind it of Betta depending on what type.
Hi Ruby! It sounds like an overcrowding issue. 11 Guppies and a beta would require atleast at 10 gallon at the bare minimum. You know how its uncomfortable to be in a crowded room. Same for fish! More space, the happier the fish. I hope this helps :)
Get a bigger tank, get a 10 gallon!
Troll
Is it weird that If I were to set up a Betta tank, that i'd try to grow a few rice plants in there?
iron 13, Let us know how that goes!
Where’s Thomas?😢
Whers thomas
What about half moons
You dont need Betta water for a Betta right?
No, just tap water that's been dechlorinated with Seachem Prime is fine.
***** ok
