- [Mono] Mr. Thompson's composition is given the treatment by the in-house band, which includes Hiram Bullock on guitar, Philippe Saisse on keyboards, Don Alias on percussion, David Sanborn on sax, Omar Hakim on drums, and Tom Barney on bass.
Jo-El Sonnier covers the main vocal duties, and plays the accordion, approximating his version of the song for this performance. A good time seems to be had by all, and Mr. Thompson is evidently pleased with the results, too. This brilliant program was the idea of Hal Willner.
Rest in Peace Jo-El Sonnier..... you will surely be missed. Passed 01/13/2024 just after putting on one hell of a show in Texas. Received a standing ovation.... as he so very much deserved!
❤
Richard Thompson once said that the royalties from Jo-el Sonnier's hit cover of this song put his kid through college.
LAWD! That was more musical talent on that one stage than what's in all of Nashville today.
Yeah, when Marty Stewart is out of town.
You are so right- never realized the connection till now- what a jam- rich was tearing it up!
RIP Jo-El
This rocks. and I was there.
R.I.P. Jo-El Sonnier! Thanks for all the great music!
RIP Jo-El Sonnier.
“Jo-El Sonnier had just completed an incredible show at the Llano Country Opry in Llano, Texas,” Texas Country Music promoter Tracy Pitcox said. “He had entertained over an hour and ended with his signature ‘Tear Stained Letter’. He received a standing ovation and I asked him to do ‘Jambalaya’ as an encore. He performed a rousing rendition of that classic. Jo-El mentioned that he needed to rest for just a few minutes before signing autographs. Unfortunately, he suffered cardiac arrest and was air flighted to Austin where he was pronounced deceased. It is never easy to lose a legend, but he truly spent his final day doing what he loved--entertaining his fans with his loving wife Bobbye by his side.”
What a great performance.
I watched this great performance on TV that night. RIP Jo-El Sonnier
ALWAYS brings a smile to my face...even 33 years later! One of my favorite Night Music moments...and there are a LOT of them.
Ok all you youngsters. That is fucking music!!! Thompson is such a great singer songwriters. Jo El has so much energy in a show. Great match up
So sad to hear of Jo-EL's passing, but what a great video to remember him by.
Wow. Just wow. Twice as fast as the original and every bit as good.
Cajun style
better
Man, I just love this type of music. It's affects your soul. Long live Cajun Music!!!!❤❤❤❤😊😅😂❤❤❤❤
How could someone give a thumbs down to this?
Fantastic!!!
Just came back to watch this again. Caught it on tv when it first came out, and I was blown away by the performances here. Sunday Night/Night Music was the best music TV show ever. Ran for 2 seasons. It wasn't enough, and the lack of public support (as usual) failed to keep it going. Should've been a DVD box set, but perhaps it's too late.
I'm Swedish and old. Soon 59. Loved original music and have played some too. R T was a strange figure back then, while in F C .
Loved his, and his then wifes' singing. My friends listened to Kiss.
There was I listening to Fairport Convention.
Jo-El Sonnier is both an excellent accordionannist and one True performer. I had a large LP- collection once. I miss it now
I used to listen to the likes of Clifton Chenier and of course Queen Ida.
JO-EL FULLFILLS IT.
Lot of memories great song Good Old Days
Effing Sanborn and his absolutely perfect playing. Man......just slays every time.
Great show. Too good for network TV.
Bravo!!
damn they can play!!!!!
Wow! What a perfect performance of that song! Thanks Richard x
Great band and top notch performance 👏
I love this song. I’ve heard ten versions now
Wow Night Music was such a great program! I didn't have a TV, and if I was visiting my parents, we were probably watching Johnny Carson. I'm so glad performances like this were captured on tape!
total badassary
Joel and the group did a great job on this song! Great news, the Grammy that Joel won in 2015,for his album "The Legacy"
What a great performance. It needs more views!
I’m doin’ my part.
That's one of the fastest renditions of the RT song that I've ever heard!
What a scintillating version by this group of musicians. Fantastic.
Stunning!!
Hot Damn!
Excellent!!
Phenomenal, I was looking for Jo-El and this treat came up!!!
RT hatless! Great guitar lick!
I saw this show, video taped it and wish it would be available on a dvd compilation. Tear Stained Letter became Richard's tune however and his stunning performance of this song at the Strawberry Bluegrass Festival in Camp Mather instantly became legendary. For years afterward, someone would start the refrain and everyone around who was at that first show would pick it up...in harmony. Nobody else that ever played there had that effect. Thanks Richard!
yes indeed! thanks for your music!!!
Rest In Peace Jo-El Sonnier!
Rest In Peace Jo-El Sonnier
Truly enjoy this classic hit song.
Hot. Fire.
what a find!!! love this
A very nice version of this song. These guys are making this work. True artists and musicians.
My Gawd wow! I saw this band w Robbin Ford do THE BLUES IS ALL RIGHT W Little Milton. Richard has a Mulates shirt on lol. I couldn’t see but Marcus MILLER was on bass too. Go JOEL. !!!! Shit was on fire
Wow! Best version I've ever heard of this great song. Bravo!
RIP Jo-El Sonnier
I have been familiar with Sonier’s version for years. I only found Richard Thompson’s recently when I was searching for the song Two Left Feet and his version came up. It was the right song but I think someone else may have recorded it because the version I remember sounded a little different. Anyway his version of Tear Stained Letter was among the first recommendations on the Two Left Feet video.
How did the room not implode from the talent in the room?
Smokin'......
Aw, he was the best.
RIP, cher.
Cajun Elvis in what looks like a Nudie jacket.
I’m pretty sure the Shawn Colvin he mentions at the beginning is the same one that did Sunny Came Home.
Shawn Colvin was in RT's traveling band in the late 80s.
@@JStarStar00 early 90s to be more exacting. I was their driver at one gig.
I want to know what the song "tear-stained letter is about.
I grew up with this music, this is basically him going through a break up, determined to make it permenant, getting better, but then right through the door comes a tear stained letter, tempting but "cry cry if it makes you feel better" means that he's still sticking by his guns
Good lawd...were they in a hurry to finish or what?!
The Steve McQueen motorbike version
They do rock. Terrific one off group effort.Notice the balding Richard Thompson has yet to start wearing his later omnipresent cap.
Great great great ... but about eight minutes too short!!
louisiana af
Hey Richard, no hat?
The pre-hat years
@@joefitz7912 The no-cool years too, sartorially speaking. The suburban school teacher on a night out look. But Jo El, RT and the bank really rip it up. Fabulous.
Just be glad RT had moved past the polyester leisure suits he was wearing in the mid-80s. 😱
sorry to hear that Jo died today
He looks so much better without that stupid beret
looks like he bumped the top of his head.
who is that man with the tambourine? Has white hair.
Never mind, I found out. He was an extremely handsome man!
Jon Daly golfer😁
The late Don Alias. Joni Mitchell apparently thought so too. Look up the story of her portrait of him…
I like Jo-El, but the Ragin' Cajun is Doug Kershaw, not Jo-El.
Mais....
Now I know why Thompson took to wearing a beret!
all due respect to the fine musicians on this show, this was way too fast! It totally lost that sweet feel.
Just didn't do it for me, I was quite disappointed. Chihuahua Daddy Hoc I can relate to the "It's Le Tempo De Haul Ass" I have played in many bar bands over the years, & and some of these train feel tunes got out of control & really went off the rails... Anyway thats my opinion on this song.
Turn the play speed down and shut your gob. Thnx lady
