    As a recovering heroin/fentanyl/opioid (they’re all interchangeable in the year of our Lord 2022) that’s been in and out of active use for 13 years (I’m 31 so nearly half my life), I’ve noticed that there’s very little music out there that I can relate to when it comes to my experiences with addiction. I’m an obsessive devourer of music and I’m constantly searching out new stuff to listen to and, although I relate to a lot of albums/bands/artists that I can deeply relate to on other feelings and topics, not many at all make me feel any less alone in my struggles with dope. DIIV however is a different story. Cole has been there. He knows what it’s like and he writes about it in a very candid and personal way that I relate to so well that it hurts sometimes. And he’s reached a zenith with that on this album, Deceiver. He doesn’t romanticize or glorify heroin addiction the way that a lot of American and English media tends to. He’s just very upfront and truthful about it, even when these truths are ugly, which they usually are. He kinda patronized the process of getting clean on Is The Is Are a little bit (apparently he was using at the time, even though the album is supposed to mainly be about recovery), but on Deceiver he gets real. Very real. Ive had short periods of sobriety and periods of using since the album came out 3 years ago, especially a very intense period of use during the pandemic where I used way more than ever and hit my lowest, hardest, scariest rock bottom. But through the trials and tribulations and the feelings of fear and loneliness, every step of the way I’ve been able to listen to this album and be reminded that I’m not alone and that other people have gone through the same exact ordeal and have come out the other side and that I can too. Thank you Cole and the rest of DIIV for not just being s great modern shoegaze band and being one of my favorites from America in general, but also for giving me hope and helping me to feel less afraid and less alone 🖤🖤🖤

    So, time passes and from the previous albums 80s post-punk/new-wave (perhaps some shoegaze) we go to full-blown 90s shoegaze and grunge for this one. Its like all these modern indie bands re-construct the history of alt-rock. No complaints though, i guess no-one ever topped and surpassed these musical movements so the only way forward is through the past. I love it.

All I hear is a new generation of bands looping the prime years of alternative rock, which were the 90s imo. No wonder rap and electronic music are far beyond rock's popularity nowadays. Sounds like they're artificially keeping something alive which is maybe better off dead. The zombie that is Nu-gaze is taking in precious limited resources which could be used for beautiful new things to grow.

    About two minutes in and I can already hear the growth from the past two records . While not as immediately rewarding as skin game, you can tell they are getting better at their ability to create different moods with their songs . They have tended to be more one dimensional in the past , being that their songs were mostly inter changeable with the next, all sounding somewhat the same. Is the is are was not as one dimensional as it’s predecessor, and judging from the first two singles, this record will be another step in the right direction. I’m digging it !

    • @RetroDrew
      @RetroDrew 5 лет назад

      The growth was immidately noticeable from Skin Game's release because they were actually writing choruses where as on Is The Is Are it's mostly just verse after verse much like mbv. I love the old stuff, Is The Is Are is still my favorite, but I love the heavy new direction they're heading as that's my preferred style of shoegaze.

    Espero con ansias el nuevo disco, los dos singles apuntan a una nueva dirección muy interesante. I felt some deftones plus ride in this one, nice turn, you are amazing guys.

      Everyone talks about Oshin.... what about Is The Is Are? They’re both insane albums.

      @Chris Greene me too :( new album is nothing like Oshin.
      Also, I think Is the is Are is weaker too. I guess something like Oshin will never happen again. It's too good
