Love those guys and seeing the shout out. I love their style, but I feel like when I try to emulate it I loose all my contrast. I am new to the hobby and painting in general and I am working on finding 'my' style, and enjoy hearing you share your journey on finding your grimdark.
Wouldn't it be easier to pick up a cheap dry brush set, and stipple? Normally they have a range of sizes which you can control the size better, and even dab off excess paint like normal. You can also use Newsh for any kind of color for grime / blood / toxins / oils and really water it down if you want it to work different. Or use oil paints. A sponge for chipping is much better unless your getting a lot of the paint off that bigger ruined brush. But you can then with a fine tip brush to add, to do scratches with as well. It also helps to make your weathering in a few colors steps but with the same brush / or sponge. It helps add depth really fast, of this can be where you use a fine tipped brush.
Base coating with black + rhinox works well. Otherwise some of the minis you showed just kinda look like, as you said at the start messy, like you couldn't cover the undercoat. I dunno, seems to work pretty well!
