I'm not a Republican but I've always thought Pat Nixon was one of the most underrated First Ladies ever regardless of Party. Rest In Peace to Her and Rest In Peace Jimmy Stewart.
Pat never cared for the spotlight and I think she found much of living in the public eye with the media scrutiny to be demeaning and humiliating, but she always loyally supported her husband's ambitions. She found politics exciting at first but was disgusted by how her husband was treated in the 1952 campaign and having to give the "Checkers speech," and I believe she utterly despised public life after the 1960 loss. While she seemed to embody the traditionalist, conservative housewife of that era, she was actually quite a dignified, fascinating woman who worked very hard in her early years and had grown up in poverty. She was college educated and had worked a number of jobs in her life. Most importantly, in all that I've read about Richard Nixon's life and career, I've never come across anyone who said a negative thing about Pat Nixon who knew her. By all accounts, she had a heart of gold and was a kind, caring person who made people feel at ease.
The 70s were great. Full of hope. People owned their own home by age 22.. So much economic opportunity and hope. Women still could raise their own children and weren't expected to work outside the home and farm their kids out to strangers. A family could live on one salary.
@@California1973-o1d That's rude. Jimmy didn't get involved in politics a lot anyway. People knew he was a Republican, obviously, but it's not like he went out every day campaigning.
