@@jankench9622 I'm sure she was a nice enough lady... I like her better than her husband... But she was who she was. I think she grew up extremely poor and was enchanted by her role and position as first lady. She said she loves to act.... and thats what we are seeing in all of her public appearances. She is playing a role... trying to portray herself as the perfect wife, perfect family, perfect marraige, always happy, hard worker, and graceful.... but we all know that is not anyones reality. I think its an unhealthy image to promote that wholesome perfect image. But thats what the 60's people wanted I guess.. She was married to tricky dick, that should be the first red flag :) But I'm being critical. I'm sure I could find some good things about her if I looked. The nixon library just makes her sound legendary.

Pat never cared for the spotlight and I think she found much of living in the public eye with the media scrutiny to be demeaning and humiliating, but she always loyally supported her husband's ambitions. She found politics exciting at first but was disgusted by how her husband was treated in the 1952 campaign and having to give the "Checkers speech," and I believe she utterly despised public life after the 1960 loss. While she seemed to embody the traditionalist, conservative housewife of that era, she was actually quite a dignified, fascinating woman who worked very hard in her early years and had grown up in poverty. She was college educated and had worked a number of jobs in her life. Most importantly, in all that I've read about Richard Nixon's life and career, I've never come across anyone who said a negative thing about Pat Nixon who knew her. By all accounts, she had a heart of gold and was a kind, caring person who made people feel at ease.
