- As someone who's been through both RASP and SFAS I decided to put a short video with my two cents on the matter.
EDIT: I know that the trek can be close to 30 miles, I had a brain fart.

Two totally different missions. The Ranger Regiment is elite Infantry, they do raids and specialized combat missions. SF’s primary mission is as a force multiplier to train and lead local civilians
to fight for themselves. Leadership and training of irregular forces and civilians are key duties of SF. Rangers fight almost exclusively by themselves, with little if any participation by local people.
Teamwork is important for Rangers, but it is critical for SF, Work together, and help other guys going through selection, the instructors will notice, and they want to see team players.

Be ready to score high on a PT test. I know in the past they only let you class up from pre-RASP if you score higher on the PT test.

When you finally got assigned to a unit , did they come down on harder on you because you had washed out of SFAS ? Did or do you have to work harder to earn your Scroll ?

I've never been mistreated or looked down on because I was an 18X washout. Yes you do have to earn your scroll.
Hey, I highly recommend that you attend RASP first. The comradery in Ranger Battalion is amazing. You won't find it like anywhere else.

I had a question that I hadn't seen an answer to on your failed Sfas video. I think a fear I have is worst case scenarios like failing and being reclassified to the "needs of the Army" and becoming a cook. What was your experience after failing?
Yeah, I had a few buddies who where reclassed to cook. Several who became tankers or air defense, I myself was reclassed to vehicle mechanic, then a year later I heard everyone was going back 11B again. It seems to go in cycles.
Which do you think offered more sleep and food deprivation overall? Also, have you heard any updates on the Q course optimization?
I haven't. And RASP the fed you well and you got decent sleep but it was 8 weeks and the cadre where heartless. Selection gave you less food and sleep but the cadre seemed to let the course smoke you.
@@JohnS677 so in essence SFAS is still physically demanding, but RASP is more of just a straight up 8 week smoke fest. I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that actual RASP is nothing like what is shown on TV lol
@@danmac4969 not when you're the one living it. But everything is doable, just go one day at a time (Or in some cases hour).
@@JohnS677 Not sure whether I'd rather have good food and good sleep but the cadre messed with me, or the cadre leave me alone but fed me less and made me sleep less... Personally I would want to look forward to the food and sleep so I'd have to say RASP was... better? If you can call it "better" lol Just seems like SFAS really forces you to rely on your own mental aptitude to not break.

I remember when I went to enlist, GT wasn't as big a deal, you still had to have a good score, but if your ASVAB was less than I think 91, you weren't even an option, and I had a pt score of 293
Yeah when I got an asvab score of 33 but my GT was a 89 so when I actually go and graduate basic I'll study for the ASVAB as long as I need to up that GT score to 110.
Heard long ago (circa late 80s). The Rangers are the Chainsaw and the SF is the Spear.

there is no prep course for RASP, but a lot of it is just being able to get a solid 80% on your pt test, and having the discipline to follow the rules to not quit. That being said the SF prep course did prepare me physically to do well in RASP.
You can go to Pre RASP where you just get smoked everyday for 3 weeks to prepare you for RASP
How do you stay in shape through OSUT for RASP?
I ran a lot in OSUT, I did some pushups on my own before bed or during my firewatch. Other than that not much you can do until after
I'm a reservist right now but the more I look into it, the more I want to do ROTC in college. Would I be able to commission as an infantry officer after college, void my reserve enlistment, and go down the path of airborne and then RASP or SFAS? I had a 130 GT score, if that would be to my advantage at all.
You branch based off ROTC rankings and available slots so yes you can branch Infantry (officers are assigned a branch not an MOS). If selected infantry, you go through IBOLC (Infantry Officer Basic Leadership Course) and then have a shot at Ranger School and Airborne School. You will be assigned a unit by HRC. You will have to serve time at a regular unit as a Platoon Leader, during which, you can drop a packet for Ranger Regiment. As for SFAS there is a window to drop a packet that changes based on your year group. Infantry is not the only branch with paths to both.

Hey man, do you know how common it is to see 18xs get reclassed at RASP?
I'm afraid I don't. I know from my experience you had a high chance of remaining 11B as most of the guys right after they reclassed my class where able to. But that was two years ago. You may be able to get a better answer from an actual regimental recruiter
I just got to my first duty station, I’m an 11b and I have want to join Sf or ranger regiment.. but I don’t know what I think is best for me.
Yeah, man. It's a tough road to choose. You just have to know yourself and what your goals are and see which unit best lines up with where you want to be.
(Edit): I will say choosing one, trying, and failing is better than not trying at all.
How hard is the rucking at SFAS and what percentage would you say that makes up of the course?

Two weeks in hell is a portion of the two weeks. Not better than someone who has done it firsthand.
You ruck all the time. In gate week, you have a short and a long ruck. In land nav, it's on your back 10+hrs a day. It's on your back the entire time during team week. Then of course, the trek. It's not about rucking fast always it's being under load for a long ass time.

Out of curiosity how old where you when you went to rasp? Primarily because I turn 27 soon and am currently training. Does age matter when most people in regiment are early 20s?
I was 27, had a few friends in their 30s. If anything I'd say your age improves your chances, because you are more likely to have the mental grit to push through and finish something like that. Some of these 18 year olds could outrun me in a 2 mile, but couldn't take it on day 0 when they smoked us until 5 people quit.

If you get pulled out of SFAS can you go to RASP shortly after or is it unlikely you will even get to go?
You can always drop a packet. I know several guys who did. I've heard that have a much more streamlined process to do it now as well.

@@xWE4PONS it means you are in a military unit and you start the process attend a school or selection, the process is referred to as dropping a packet because you have to put together a packet of paper work to submit to your unit or the school liaison.
So if one was to do special forces national guard would you still be required to go through this whole process and would you be required to train much more than just standard guard infantry?
National guard has to go through the Q course as well as selection, airborne and infantry basic.
The difference from what I understand is NG you're rarely deployed overseas, versus basically living in other countries; you mostly stay home 80% of the time.
@@jpisback Yeah that's why I'm not joining NG. I want to go to combat. NG SF were nearly deployed yesterday to Washington to deal with the protesters.
@@LethalByChoice you can deploy as well. From what I read of NG, especially SF, they can deploy as often as active if it's available and they are top choice.

Fair assessment. each has it's suck for the specific needs or goal. Back when God was a corporal...we called SF "The Ranger Retirement Home". with much do respect! I believe SERE school might be a sneak peak into the training atomospher of SF training to a degree
Can I get a option 40 contract with a GED. Any info would be very helpful thanks.
Joe Oaklove Should be able to. Joining requires a diploma or GED. Getting the contract has nothing to do with that. Its all about your GT score. Talk to your nearest recruiter.

I came in with a GED, was an 11B. Getting an option 40 contract all depends on if they have any slots available when you sign your contract, you’ll more than likely get some guys from regiment come down to your basic training class & offer contracts as well to those who exceed physical standards as well. So if you don’t get it in your contract from the beginning, don’t worry you’ll more than likely get a few more opportunities to get your chance.
I was told by the recruiter that with a GED you get nothing extra, no option 40, no bonuses. If you get 15 semester hours of college you will be looked at as a high school graduate so you can get all that.

Started as 18x then dropped a RASP packet in AIT when I was reclassed.
Do you absolutely need a GT score of 105 to go to RASP?
From what I understand that is the baseline score to getting in. They may be willing to take wavers I'm not sure.
@@JohnS677 so I’m an idiot and took the asvab on short notice and had no idea I couldn’t retake. I scored a 104 gt score. I signed an 11x and planned on picking up option 40 at osut. I’ve got a medical waiver which is the reason I couldn’t get the option 40 in the first place. Anyways I’m a 300 APFT score, 596 ACFT score, can do the 12 mile ruck easily, do the five miler in 34:00. I waited 2 years to get my medical passed. It finally passed and I’ve been training the last 9 months for RASP. I talked to friends at airborne and pre rasp and they said they were waiving pretty much everyone for everything. Like gt score 95 and up and anything medical. I’m going in and just not looking back. I’m really hoping I can pick up a rasp slot. I’ve been waiting to go to rasp litterly the past two years and I might just have my shot.

@@keegans.3939 if you’re infantry they won’t waive your gt score, if you’re an mos other than infantry they waive the gt down to sometimes 80 depending on your mos if it’s critical.
To get in RASP before you join then yes, you need 105 or more. If you’re already in you can get it waived by the 75th recruiters.
Did you get re-classed when you passed RASP?
I've heard that can happen now, but no I was reclassed before
@@JohnS677 my friend said if guys crush PT as 18X’s there they have a chance to remain 11B. He says they weren’t doing the reclass until after RASP

Rangers are elite infantry and Special Forces are Commandos. They both have different roles.

I was at the Q course and got dropped at every end of robin sage, I speak a second language and Am ranger qualified. They pick and choose who they want. Cadre roulette. All it takes one cadre not liking you.

@@tgildersleeve8295 She had big wigs rooting for her. The cadre had their hands tied and had no choice but to push her through, regardless of her subpar performance. Not a rare occurrence in the army sadly, political statements are more important to the powers that be than combat effectiveness.

How can you compare the two when you never even finished all of SFAS. Getting dropped before the star exam, and never doing team week? You can't speak on the difficultly of SFAS, much less compare the two.
@@SIERRAFOXTROT19 that's fair, but I am simply giving the best info I have on the subject. Also, I've talked to some of my buddies who where 21 day non selects and still went through RASP, so I'm not completely ignorant on the subject.

Ranger batt is cool unless you can’t handle being treated like shit until you get to a point where u really are apart of regiment and have proven your worth. Sf is more gentleman like little higher Gt score so use ur imagination and rmr rangers are basically the fighting force of the army SF has a different mission consisting of training indigenous people and other units and going into battle with them they do other stuff as well but think of this two ranger is about 8 weeks then ur in and from there the real test to keep your scroll 6 months after that u maybe in combat SF you’ll be training for 1.5-3 years of school and training until you land on a team and actually get moved out so think hard before u just shoot for it and don’t any of you dare show up to her ass and give off the impersonation that you think Ranger Regiment is just a steppingstone to make it into special forces they are two totally different entities and they both have a lot of pride in who they are and what they do so show some respect and realize they are both special operations and sometimes they work together their mission sets are similar and different but both of them are hard charging dudes who deserve your respect above all just enjoy your journey no matter what and remember to Proud of yourself every time you complete a phase or pass a phase don’t just focus on earning your tan barre or your Green Beret specially your Green Beret you can’t just focus on that for two years you have to give yourself small victories or you’re more than likely going to tap out best of luck to anyone trying to go down this path

@@Alanthe918mobilemechanic I did end up going to Ranger regiment, but due to some family things going on I am stepping away from active duty once my contract expires. Maybe one day I'll have the privilege of trying again, but in the meantime I'll try to support those who are getting after it.

No, im 26 and i've been training for it for about a year now and i will not stop until i reach my goal. The 75th ranger regiment uploaded a video called "Age is just a number" watch it. You're good to go. Train endurance

@@christiandinero8083 think about what you really want. I decided I wanted to go SF to make things a little easier on your family. Rangers are top notch dudes. You can't go wrong either way.
Lot's of incorrect statements in this video but the biggest that jumped out to me is the implication Green berets are on average more intelligent than us or have to be more intelligent with their ASVAB. Both RASP and SFAS require a GT score of 110 or higher. This is also thrown right out of the window when considering Rangers make up more than 75% of CAG candidates that actually pass. They already have the elite shock training required and are smart enough, they don't need much more to become tier one operators. Also, regiment takes ANYONE as long as they can make the standard ( I am 28). RASP is 8 weeks but the real training starts once you're in regiment. Green berets are awesome but not superior to Rangers (not implying you suggested it, just need to make that statement because it's an absolute truth).
Really, the ending sentiment paints the perfect picture. You WANT to go back to SFAS, you do NOT want to go back to RASP, there's a fear inducing reason for that. RASP sucks balls.
If you could point out the incorrect statements id be happy to redact them or defend them.
As far as what I seem to be implying I do not find green berets as superior to Regiment and even though that's how they are often painted that concept annoys me so I don't agree with what you are saying about me. However green berets do encourage a more mature community, that is true because I've seen it myself. I am not saying they are better. Also regiment accepts a 105 GT score last I checked and SFAS was 110. But you and I both know ASVAB scores dont reflect true intelligence.
I am familiar with rangers high success rate with CAG. This happens because CAG and regiment have similar mission sets.
I feel that you may have read into some things I'm saying more than I intended.

Hey brother, have no interest in being a dick. You don't like me for whatever reason that's fine. There's the info about a 105 ASVAB score and I never said I didn't make it through RASP. Just keep in mind there is some information that is best left off the internet.
@Good Vibez You will PT every day Monday through Friday at RASP. If they sense you aren't putting out at any time you will be smoked even worse. If you cop attitude or don't put effort past that you will be kicked/peered out. After you have proven yourself you will have weekends off to recover. I highly recommend you do just that on the weekends and not go out drinking/partying.

@@Sniper18B Also agree. Good friend of mine, an absolute physical animal, stepped on a pinecone all funny during the first gate week ruck. Tore a ligament in his foot. Some very well prepared people just get unlucky, it's not a "failure."
