Following the domination of their homeland by Persian powers of the time, Armenians were sent by their new rulers to the Bengal region for both political and economic reasons. Although the Armenian presence in South Asia is now insignificant, their presence in Dhaka dates back to the 17th century. Armenians came to Dhaka for business. In Dhaka, Armenian merchants traded in jute and leather, and profitability in these businesses convinced some to move permanently to Bangladesh. The area where they lived became known as Armanitola.
In 1781 the now famous Armenian Church was built on Armenian Street in Armanitola, then a thriving business district. The site was an Armenian graveyard before the church was built, and the tombstones that have survived serve as a chronicle of Armenian life in the area. Agaminus Catachik, an Armenian, gave away the land to build the church. Michel Cerkess, Okotavata Setoor Sevorg, Aga Amnius, and Merkers Poges helped build the church

Loving these videos Gabe. Missed those busy streets of Dhaka for so long. Most of Dhaka is honestly like this, busy and crowded but a lot cleaner in the central areas. If you want a modern look, try going to Gulshan/Banani. Although, it's mainly a made up area for rich people, not the true Dhaka. If you are planning to stay any longer in Dhaka, try going to the Dhanmondi area and visit (Rabindra Sarabar or walk around Satmasjid Road). You will find the same amount of crowd and lots of restaurants but a lot cleaner. Till next time 💙✌

Do you think there is a more modern side, with more educated and middle class crowd and malls and nicer restaurants, etc, which is may be a lil cleaner too? I am not at all saying that you have to go there but I just wanted to get an idea if there is that side also in Dhaka?

And also show the gritty parts of travelling, not just everything nice and shiny. This is how it is to travel, and it remind me of my ovn travels through Asia. I`m getting my travel itch scratched trough your video`s, since I`m not currently fit for travel. Really liked your last Thailand video`s, wondering if that is my next destinations of traveling. Hi Gabriel, it's amazing what you find here to find a Christian church in the middle of a Muslim and Hindu Country it's just astounding and so well guarded still and there are no Armenians left in the region it's just a little-known fact. An Armenian marker of the time in Bangladesh is intact and undisturbed.

@@aaronlundstrom HI.I want to remind you this is not all about Dhaka city.we have poor and high class society where Europe and America has almost unique society-culture.Dhaka is divided into two parts. The high and developed class society has higher living standard even you can not find in EU and US.High class or well off society never goes to that Area where he is travelling in the same area again and again.Bangladesh is a very beautiful county with beautiful nature and season with diverse food culture and very hospitable in nature where you can not find no where else in the World.

@@aaronlundstrom That is nice.Just keep in mind that anywhere in the world specially in south Asia if you want to visit then try to explore yourself mixing with different culture, food and environment by removing the mental barrier and obstacle. Then you get real test of mental satisfaction.
