Met the great man once in London City Airport on the way to see my then girlfriend in Basel. It wasn't busy and I wanted him to sign someone. As I was at the bar already I bought him a whiskey and after necking mine (for courage of course) went and said Hello, Dad used to take me to your Bond films which I still love etc...A very gracious gentleman, and although he didn't fancy the whiskey he did sign the 4-disc Aretha Franklin boxset, addressing it to my girlfriend. Over the moon! That was until I gave her the boxset and she asked me who Roger Moore was...(and even worse) Who's Aretha Franklin? It was a very short relationship.
Roger Moore is the most refined and gentlemanly chap I have ever seen. How anyone can criticise his charm, refinement, and grace is beyond my understanding. It's been proven that most Roger Moore critics wear a Bintang singlet and thongs, and have sweaty armpits.
As a Bond fanatic, who doesn't really rate the many of the Moore films, I somehow love this one. Very entertaining, great music, decent action and Walken! What more do we need?
Same, i actually think Octopussy is a much weaker film. I really love this movie, Duran Duran even did the themesong, its completely fun! I think that this is a film you can watch anytime it is on. Moonraker was cobbled together to cope with the star wars popularity. Live and let die will always be Moores best one for me. The man with the golden gun, it was okay, same as for your eyes only. We all have our favorites though.
Licence to Kill might be more so. It's probably not as noticeable because it's a little more hard edged and Bond is MUCH younger. They definitely were making an 80s Bond here for sure.
I love this movie. Moore's age was never an issue to me. Harrison Ford was 66 in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and still looked cool. What I wished they could've done diferently, was to aknowledge his age. An older Bond, it could've been a cool concept!
Main problem: Moore seemed really, really old because ALL of his _counterparts_ (4! of them) were just so much younger than he, particularly Tanya (RIP to both).
@@bonghunezhou5051 His age wouldn't have been an issue if he hadn't so obviously messed around with his face. He looked fine in 1984 doing The Naked Face.
He would've been a much better fit for the Bond role if they actually would've gotten him during that time he first began his television role as "The Saint ",he was initially considered for the James Bond role at the time by the way.
@@leighwright3450 I say that all the time. He was cool in The Saint and his fight scenes were fast and energetic. Had he been Bond from the start (without the shadow of Connery), he would've been the best!
Out of all the Bond films, this is the weirdest, Walken and Grace Jones are Brilliant. The Music is Fantastic, It's entertaining, it's a Bond film. Out of all the Bond films, this is the one that you could never replicate even if you tried. P.S if you want to have the best movie weekend of your life, watch AVTAK on Friday, Watch Die Hard on Saturday, and watch Licence to Kill on Sunday. You won't be disappointed. Promise.
I don't mind this movie, it's pretty fun. Walken and Jones are an excellent villain and hench woman respectively. It's better than Quantum Of Solace, Spectre, Never Say Never Again, Diamond's Are Forever etc. Roger Moore is my sentimental favourite Bond.
Yes it has some interesting characters, some fun scenes, some good scenes and an actual story unlike spectre or even no time to die was also a bit hollow. Quantum of solace could have been good if they had a better villain, less choppy editing and just add like 30 minutes.
I loved this Movie on release. Now, years later, I see Patrick Macnee and Roger Moore hobbling along like two Pensioners trying to get to the lunchtime buffet before they collapse from exhaustion. And they are meant to be the best MI6 can muster? God help us all.
Love the porcupine reference - classic. Actually, this is one of my favourite Bond flicks for dialogue and Christopher Walken alone. Nothing wrong with fun. Keep 'em coming.
I must have seen this film a thousand times when I was a kid. I remember it being on HBO every 17 minutes. Tanya Roberts wasn’t much of an actress but in the looks department... AAAAOOOOOGAAAH!
The producers were so envious that McClory had remade Thunderball that they had to go and remake Goldfinger in retaliation. But whereas Connery's Bond is seemingly a worthless secret agent who personally accomplishes next to nothing in Goldfinger, Moore's Bond wisely hires some stunt men to do the mission for him.
This and 'Die Another Day' are the only pre-Craig films that I've only watched once. I don't think even Moore's age is the reason why it feels so routine and jaded. I can't see a new Bond actor in this story bringing that much energy to it. Broccoli seemed to always want the talisman of an established Bond, despite his reputation as someone prepared to go for broke when necessary.
This was the first ever James Bond I ever saw back in the days when it first was out on video. I stilll watch it regularly to this day. I always enjoy it. I have had to go to San Francisco for work a few times and I always go visit the locations like city hall and the golden gate bridge. Great movie!!! Thanks for another awesome review!
I have to disagree. This is definitely one of the better classic Bond movies - fun, moves along nicely, great villain in Walken, and Tanya was gorgeous. The Craig era movies might be more "realistic" and gritty but they're basically Borne films and lost the fun and charm of the earlier films as most modern sequels/reboots do.
I prefer it to his 'The Man with the Golden Gun', MacNee and Walken really lift their scenes imho. A lot more fun than anything starring Daniel Craig too! ^^ (love the Star Cops shout out btw)
I sort of agree that the 1980's Bond villains were mostly lackluster, but Zorin here and Franz Sanchez in 1989's Licence to Kill were pretty cool. Tanya Roberts wasn't a great actress (neither was she in Charlie's Angels), but what a looker. This movie had great location shooting too: Paris, London, San Francisco- Oakland Bay Area. RIP Roger Moore, Tanya Roberts, Patrick Macnee.
Roger Moore was my 007 as a kid in the 70s, so I have a lot of affection for his era, but by the time A View To A Kill came out I was an insufferable teenage Bond snob who had read all of the Fleming books was now firmly on team Connery. At the time I found AVTAK borderline unwatchable for all sorts of reasons. My opinion of it hasn't improved much since, but I can't bring myself to hate it and I totally understand why some Bond fans would love it, especially if it was the first 007 film they ever saw as a kid.
It’s definitely licence to draw the pension for Roger, Patrick and Lois - like the afternoon buffet in a Florida all you can eat as long as it’s cheese - however it dies have Alison Doody, grace Jones and Tanya Roberts with the most beautiful eyes ever !!!
I love this film. A fair few others dislike it, but like other commenters have said, Moore's age didn't really put me off. I heard he did an interview during the filming saying he felt (physically) in great shape for 57. It would of been nice to see Dalton start on Octopussy and AVTAK, but Moore has that certain charm. Plus, Christopher Walken is probably one of my favourite villains because he's willing to get his own hands dirty to see his plan through.
Dalton wasn't available for octooussy which is why they almost went with the American guy name escapes me so you never would have had Dalton that's what people don't understand when they wanted Dalton for octopussy etc.

Bond actors seem to either stick around too long or leave too soon. This really should have been Dalton's first Bond film, especially as they never acknowledge Bond as being an older agent. By 1985 they were well into the 1980s and it had so many modern elements yet Moore's Bond is almost an anachronism in his own film. It had a theme by Duran Duran! Octopussy would have been a far better sendoff for Moore's Bond.

--- TRUE! THE ACTOR, THE STUNTMAN, and THE PRETTY-GIRL ACTRESS . . . were bored with their jobs, because the greed of the producers yielded the mediocre movie "A View to a Kill" (1985), which is populated with paper-doll characters. That product of indifferent workers resulted from the film crew's boredom with their mass- production of what used to be a bespoke product, i.e. there was no script editor (an educated, objective person) to note and resolve the inconsistencies of plot holes, illogic, characterisation, etc., which is why this Bond movie rarely merits re-watching.
Seeing it now, the villain had much "Cow Bell" presence, but I'm sure back then Walken was just an ordinary villain. Sir Godfrey was a highlight too, and I thought Bond and his undercover roleplaying was quite funny. It's competently made on a cinematography/direction level, but not overly interesting. The plot is very 'meh' with contrivances abound. Moore is clearly too old and Tanya Roberts is not great. Stacy's character is particularly disappointing considering Octopussy in the previous film who was genuinely an interesting character and much stronger than most of the 80s Bond girls. I enjoy watching it, but it's very middle of the road. I don't think it deserves as much hate as it gets from some Bond fans.
Yes, Roger Moore looks strange. Yes, too much of A View to a Kill I think is rather boring. At least they made an effort for A View to a Kill to be interesting. I rank it higher than Moonraker and Octopussy for that reason. I do get a kick out of the Golden Gate Bridge sequence too.
