A VIEW TO A KILL (1985) - Roger Moore: James Bond Revisited (Tanya Roberts R.I.P)

  • Welcome back to another installment of James Bond Revisited. Sadly, our time with Roger Moore is coming to an end in this, his last go-round as 007, A VIEW TO A KILL. Much maligned by fans and critics (even if it developed something of a cult following in recent years), this 1985 release proved to be Moore's swan song in the role, with him being pretty open in his biography ("My Word is My Bond") about how he felt he was now too old for the part.
The film, which was an attempt to recapture the magic of GOLDFINGER, albeit with microchips as opposed to gold, stars Christopher Walken as Max Zorin, a genetically engineered madman with ties to the KGB. Disco diva Grace Jones co-stars as his henchwoman May Day, while the late Tanya Roberts is Moore's leading lady, Stacy Sutton. The score, by John Barry, is top-shelf and features one of the best 007 theme songs, "A View to a Kill" by Duran Duran! Check out our run-down of this controversial but still enjoyable outing.

I have to be honest, I love this film! It's absolutely bonkers! But it's so entertaining! Plus you can play a great drinking game out of this film. Drink every time his double appears on screen - wasted after the first 10 minutes - Great video btw mate!

It's the only one I saw in the theaters. I was a kid, and my friend and I mostly used it as a way to get in the theater so we can sneak in and see the rated R Rambo First Blood part 2. I think this movie was rated PG, which is crazy when you look at that scene where he's mowing down people with that submachine gun.

I've always loved this movie - even if Rog is a little long in the tooth. Hate that stupid robot though.
Fun fact: The scene when Bond and Tanya steal the fire truck? That was actually Roger Moore himself driving that thing. The stuntman that was supposed to do the driving was unable to do so in the end. Not wanting to hold up an expensive night shoot on which EON had also secured permission for the streets to be closed to traffic so they could film, Moore, who had in his younger days been a heavy-goods lorry driver, took the wheel himself.

How could you discuss this film without referencing Patrick Macnee? Meta casting which acknowledged Steed's influence as a proto-Bond and the importance of The Avengers during the 60s spy boom, his chemistry with Moore is palpable and makes his demise genuinely touching.

I was 10 when this came out, so didn't noticeif it was silly, or didn't care, and it's the first Bond film I remember being released into the cinema. When Roger Moore died it was mentioned he'd suffered from skin cancer a number of times in his past. It's my theory that the face lift could've been due to skin cancer. Why else would you remove a mole and why wait until you're closing in on 60 years old.. This was the first Bond movie I bought on VHS with some birthday money as a kid and I bought it completely at random out of all the Bonds not knowing which film was which. The main thing I wanted firstly was a great theme tune & Bang! Duran Durans theme was like the start of a whole new chapter in my life. It's still my fave song & I became a DD fan from then on (just as their light was fading, though they came back in 93) but as a result of this film being the first Bond film I ever bought, it hold a place in my life for nostalgic & sentimental reasons. I know full well it's a bit of a creeky film & has many folk not liking it. But I still love it to bits & think it a great film. Roger Moore was always my favourite 007 as I grew up with him in the role and TD & PB, I would rate as very similar in the role, but GoldenEye stands out as the Best film after The Spy Who Loved Me. With Die Another Day being utter dog shit and by far the worst and most ridiculous Bond film other than the Sellers/Niven lsd fever dream Casino Royale. Both these two are way worse than A View To A Kill with CR being almost unfathemable and unwatchable and neither, funny, thrilling or worth wasting any time on watching. Die Another Day to me is the ulitmate dud in the actual bond series. I was quite young and imature when it came out & the thought of an invisible car was really exciting. I'm not that idiot any more and I now realise the invisible car as the most ridicilous and utterly stupid gadget in any of the Bond films. He uses it in snow, where tyre marks show & heat would melt where it sits, never mind that if no one can see you because your car is invisible then you will clearly cause an accident, and all you need to see them is thermo camera, crap crap crap idea. Not only the invisable car, but the constant nods, "jokes" & call backs to previous Bond outings because it was the 50th anniversary make it a constant "wach warrh!!" dud joke where you pause your jaw drops & you roll your eyes & shake your head. Then the best & ultimate faux pas is the woeful laughable diabolical CGI (CRAP GRAPHICS INEPTITUDE) that turn bond into cartoon land fodder, ugh!!! And if you think thats bad check out the interviews with director Lee Tamahori about the film. He wanted Connery back as previous bond either to train new bonds or be the vilian. They say A View To A Kill was a bad film. But it didn't cause the whole series to get rebooted like Die Another Day and now to me, Bond with Craig, has to compete with Jason Bourne or Ethan Hunt & the Joy and fun that was in RM Bond adventures isn't there. It's overly serious and sulky, not quippy, raised eyebrow & "keeping the british end up!"

Good point about the age difference between Moore and his female co-stars here! In OCTOPUSSY, at least, Maude Adams looked Ever So Slightly Older (though 38 is not that old, especially not when Moore's already in his mid-Fifties!), and it felt appropriate for the two of them to hook up.
In A FEW TO A KILL, Moore behaves like a better-looking version of Benny Hill -- which, given Q is behaving like that Jackie Wrights (that old guy on his show), kind of fits!

Roger had both work done on his face and looks to be the leanest he was since the 1960s. (which only further contributed to him looking old)

I know I said the same for the Beastmaster video, but Tanya Roberts was possibly the most beautiful women in film - at least, she always comes up when my friends talk about it. View to a Kill has always been one of my favorite Bond films, just because it has Christopher Walken, Grace Jones and Tanya Roberts. To Moore's credit, he hated being paired up with much younger actresses. Many men would find that stokes their ego, but Moore is too much of a gent and he doesn't need his ego stoking. I wouldn't be at all surprised to find that Moore preferred Tanya Roberts to be more covered up because he was embarrassed that she was so young.

Moore didnt like grace jones too much, she was a diva. His age at the time was never an issue for me, in fact, i’ve never really thought he was too old for the part.

Loved Moore as the 70's Bond . But he probably should of stopped at Moonraker (aged already 52 ) and passed the mantle on to his younger lookalike Ian Ogilvy who was rumoured to get the part but didn't because Broccoli allowed the aging Moore to carry on .

Roger Moore was actually 57 years old during the filming of View to a Kill, but I take your point about him being too old.
I remember watching this film in the summer of 1985. It wasn't the best Bond film, but it has a certain charm about it. I still think Roger Moore was the best Bond and Moonraker is my favorite.

This is my second least favorite of Moore's Bond movies (I've rewatched most of the Bond films recently and this is one of the last ones I've watched) with Live and Let Die being my least favorite of his. This was the first Bond movie to come out after I had been born though I didn't see it until much later. My introduction to Bond was watching several of the Connery and Moore movies, The Living Daylights, and On Her Majesty's Secret Service while mom and I were staying at her younger sister's house for a week when visiting her family in 90 but I don't think this was one of the ones I watched then. (I remember seeing the ones I named, Goldfinger, You Only Live Twice, Dr. No, Octopussy, Moonraker, and The Spy Who Loved Me there and I think that was the only period when I watched Bond movies there because usually when visiting mom and I stayed with her oldest sister.

Live and Let Die had the most lovable villains. CW is hateful in this and I like him in most anything. Maybe I need to rewatch it. I thought it was too long when I saw it many years ago- doesn't this one have the cooking scene? Ugh boring. And the over the top violence felt forced and didn't belong in a movie with a gentleman like Moore. Bad movie in my book

That's not true too old. A View to a Kill was a great movie. Roger Moore really wanted to do one more James Bond movie after A View to a Kill which would be shot only in Great Britain. Mostly in Scotland, but United Artists wouldn't let him!

WTF!!! Walken is fantastic in this film and he is the star of the film. If anything Jones is trying to keep up in the OTT ham stakes. As for her songs... Libertango is a classic. Have a listen one of the greatest songs of the 80s

Seriously, your videos are decent, but saying Christopher walken isn't a classic james bond vilain is insane. The guy is an experiment, and he plays the crazy/psychotic smart guy so well. He is so iconic, you see him once you'll never forget him. You mention Grace Jones, yes she is fantastic but so is he. They all brought their magic to this movie. I think you got it wrong there.
