    I was stationed near the Gatun Locks from 1992-94...Lived on Ft. Davis in the 408th MI barracks as a mechanic in the motorpool. Good times were had down there. Loved watching the ships go through the canal...sometimes you had no choice if you had to cross to go to Ft. Sherman or to the Tarpon Club...

    I used a Sony DSR PD250 (semi-pro) camera, and it was plugged in the whole time. I had the camera on a tripod, plugged in and surrounded by security barriers that kept people away from it. The Panama Canal pilot (who actually captains the ship inside the canal) was sitting right next to it. This transit began at 8am, and finished at about 5pm.

    The video quality

  • @radiofreebc
    @radiofreebc  17 лет назад

    I put a miniDV video camera inside the bridge of the ship while we crossed that had a "timer mode" that captured about half a second's worth of footage once every 30 seconds. When we were finished, I took that footage (it's still a lot slower than this), and I sped it up to about 1000x speed in the computer. (I was working on the ship, and we showed it at the end of the cruise on the big screen in the theatre...it looks amazing at full resolution on the big screen.)

    @argonne5 It's a video camera. Megapixels don't really factor into video cameras, but this one shoots stills at 10 Megapixels. I'm shooting 1080i60 AVCHD and then compressing it to 720p30 Quicktime to post here. It's High-Definition video (well, not quite...but close).

    I went through there recently and we used the left hand locks coming in and going out.
    I think they keep both lanes inbound in the mornings and keep both lanes outbound in the evenings. There is no "lane-switching". The Gaillard Cut is a one-land road anyways.

    The music was just some royalty-free theme music I got from work. I'm not sure who it is, but it works with this pretty well (or a lot better than some of the other music I tried out with it before deciding on this). As far as that last ship in the last set of locks (Miraflores)...if it's the same one i'm thinking about, it's just a tug there to guide us out.

    Un Barco demora aproximadamente 8 ó 9 horas en cruzar el Canal de Panamá. La sensación de cruzar el canal es indescriptible para mi es como mágico!

  • @GoblinAlchem
    @GoblinAlchem 13 лет назад

    @TheTmny876able: For example, because of ocean currents and tides. The tides work differently depending on the coastline. Also, you can notice that in the beginning the ship goes up the locks, and in the end it goes down. This allows to use inland lakes without having to dig them all down to the ocean level.

    Haha...they actually fold down the guardrails, clear the front deck and retract all the lines when a helicopter is using the pad. Very cool operation when you see it happening. They usually don't even slow down the ship...it just keeps sailing along while the helicopter lands at speed.

    @halfstepdown88 The locks operate as sort of a water escalator to get the ships over the continental divide. The land elevation in the center (Gatun Lake) is almost 100 feet above sea level.

  • @radiofreebc
    @radiofreebc  17 лет назад

    I think he meant 0:46, when there is only one person walking around on the front deck (right when the heavy rain comes).

    se llaman exclusas y es una clase de peaje para cobrarle el paso a los barcos y para que ellos puedan frenar, el tiempo es de aprox 30 min. dependiendo del tamaño del barco

  • @JesssTrance00
    @JesssTrance00 16 лет назад

    the weather changed suddenly and started to rain, due the movie speed, the rain seems more like fog...el clima cambió repentinamente y comenzó a llover fuertemente, debido a la velocidad del vídeo, las gotas de lluvia no se veían, pareciéndose a niebla...genial el efecto de "niebla"...xD (yo sé que es lluvia pero a alta velocidad de reproducción)

  • @Proxiart
    @Proxiart 16 лет назад

    simple way to explain this... The water will get to low and the boats will get stuck...
    The way it works.... (for whoever wants to know)
    in every sluice there are slides. if u want to fern into a sluice, the water in the lake and sluice needs to be the same level.. (duh) That is controlled by the slides.. they can let water come out (so the level in the sluice rises) or let water get in (letting the water leven in the sluice drop) Really easy..
    Hope this explains it to you

  • @lray1948
    @lray1948 13 лет назад

    @BNSFrailfan The tides are different on both coasts. On the Caribbean coast, they are eighteen inches; on the Pacific side they are about 8 feet. Even if they could build a sea level canal, they'd have to put some locks in so there wouldnt be a tidal bore rushing thru the canal once a day

    Actually, the trains don't pull the ships. The ships go through the locks under their own power, piloted by a Panamanean captain, who takes over while the ship passes through the locks. The trains are used to keep the ship centered, just like a tug boat. I just visited the Miraflores locks and museum last month. They tell the audience about the trains and their job over and over again throughout the day.
