The LED's I purchased were a bit expensive, and I really want to make sure that I power them properly and not risk burning them out. Thanks.
Edit: I should have paid more attention to your comment, you clearly already know what PWM means. You asked how to do it. Use a transistor or MOSFET to open and close the path to the power. Control that gate with either a timer circuit (555 chip in an astable configuration (I think))[hard and cheap] or a microcontroller such as an Arduino or PIC chip [easy but not cheap]. Some microcontrollers come with a PWM function built in, others you would have to write it, but the code is simple and straightforward. @@garyrice8198 what Peter said does not make sense to me. I'm not an expert but I do know a few things about electronics and LEDs. He's talking about Pulse Width Modulation (PWM), you can get enough reading on Wikipedia to understand what it is. Basically though, it is the process of turning the LED on at full power for a period of time and then turning it off for another period of time. The apparent brightness of the LED while doing this is the ratio of the on time to the total time. This is how LEDs are dimmed, rather than lowering the instantaneous current. The cycle time is so short, that the human eye usually does not notice that the LEDs are blinking. However, you can observe this effect by waving your hand in front of a dimmed LED, you will observe a strobe light effect over your fingers. Now, what Peter suggested was to overdrive the LEDs at 10 times their rated maximum output but pulsing them at a cycle of 1 part on, 9 parts off (1/10th)[1 part on/10 parts total]. The weird part is where he claims the perceived brightness will be greater. To me, that makes no sense. The brightness should be the same as driving them at the rated current and constant on, because 1/10th times 10 = 1. I also find it weird that he wants to pulse the light at full brightness. But like I said, I'm not an expert and there could be something I'm missing or don't know about. But then again he didn't reply to you and he didn't elaborate, so who knows. In any case, how is your flashlight project going? Got anything to report back on?
Help me lol.. I got a boost converter that can control current but when I turn voltage up to 35v from 12v and try adjust the current down to 2.5-3a it resets the boost voltage to my battery's 12v.. I'm trying to power one of these LEDs and regulate the current but it's doing my head in.. could I use a 10w 1ohm res if it's just 1 led? Or is there anything I could use inline with the boost converter to limit the current to 2.5 - max 3amp? Advice would be good thanks
Now that is actually an incredible idea due to the cooling nature of it - on the sets of films lights can become dangerously overheated and required gloves to operate - liquid cooling flood lights are quite a good idea
Nope, the focal point of this lamp is to wide, you'll need to first refocus it so that the bat-signal would be clear, or else you're only shining a very blurry bat that will look like a cloud.
If you focus this light, I bet it turns into a weapons-grade laser. No need for pistol when you can just punch holes in skulls with pure light. Pew pew pew!
I think they're great of recreational use. I personal do not own a truck at the moment, but would get some if I did. I have plenty ideas of what I would use them for. I believe they should be outlawed from being mounted facing rearward.
little tip here, your heatsink will work quite a bit better if you do not spread the thermal paste out. it is better to let the component spread it out as it will naturally push the air out, provided it is just a single large dab in the center. I have noticed a 14 degree difference in my processor after doing so. no joke, it used to overheat while playing games, never again after that.
Thanks for the tip. I've always spread my paste out as thin and even as I can. If you're getting better results with a dab in the centre, I'll give that a go next time. Cheers.
be careful not to use too much! a single droplet is enough for a processor! Too much results in a loss of performance, and you risk getting it outside the component, and if its conductive you could ruin your motherboard and cpu
+Starl0rd Unless you buy really cheap chinese thermal paste it won't be conductive, Also you can spread thermal paste out... But It's best to do it with something that can evenly distribute it, if you cannot distribute it completely evenly then just do a pea sized drop in the middle :)

@@brandonthatcher7781 probably you're drawing too much power from the converter
Now that is actually an incredible idea due to the cooling nature of it - on the sets of films lights can become dangerously overheated and required gloves to operate - liquid cooling flood lights are quite a good idea
When you want to give the sun a taste of it's own medicine.
The sun wouldn't notice
That farmer was like ( Dang It Betty! Those damn aliens are back ruining my crops! ((Grabs Shotgun))...
We are lucky you choose to use your skills for good, Samm-mad-genius-Sheperd
you seem to have created a small sun
Smartphone flashlights should be like this one. Imagine a music concert....lol
I want one of these for when cars high beam me.... hahaha
You're the reason people can't have nice things, douche.
No the reason you can have one is because your a broke piece of shit

Can i call BATMAN from this light?
Pretty sure you can call the aliens from CEoT3K with this light.
HARVEY DENT: CAN WE TRUST HIM?!
Actually laughed out loud.
Harvey Dent... Can we Trust Him!?!
Nope, the focal point of this lamp is to wide, you'll need to first refocus it so that the bat-signal would be clear, or else you're only shining a very blurry bat that will look like a cloud.
Now You Can See The Brightest Light Shine FOREVER !! Shine On ☀️🌟
gamma ray detected by alien life, source: tiny blue planet.
i need this on my car for all the idiots, driving at me with high beams on .....
Can i get it in a pistol mount?
James Palmer
It IS the pistol
If you focus this light, I bet it turns into a weapons-grade laser. No need for pistol when you can just punch holes in skulls with pure light. Pew pew pew!
How long before you see this mounted on the front of some idiot's pickup truck.
I've got 120k-ish lumens between 9 led light bars on my daily driven truck, but I'm not an idiot with them!
my buddy owns DigiDiodes so i get dealer pricing. Only use them when I'm on the dirt
I think they're great of recreational use. I personal do not own a truck at the moment, but would get some if I did. I have plenty ideas of what I would use them for. I believe they should be outlawed from being mounted facing rearward.
It would be on the same idiot's truck that has the balls dangling near the hitch. 👊👊
all ready did fam
nature: it's night time now. This guy with some LED Flashlight: how about no.
Police and Fire and rescue could totally use those.
Fuck the police
Nobody wanted to rescue you, anyways.
says the policestate to it's citizen...
oooooookay....
ikr
do you want zombies to charge at you? because that's how you get zombies to charge at you.
Man that thing would really help search and rescue , great job bettering the world I mean it
So simple, compact, affordable and efficient. That's what i want to see on a diy channel!!
how long does the battery last
me and my seeing eye dog are suing you right now :)
Ah, eye see.
shut up and take my money......
For real, where can buy one of these and how much do you want for one ?

“Aziz! Light!” *Aziz flips this sucker on* “Oh that’s much better. Thank you, Aziz.”
That spaceship was still dimmer than this.
This would be a great night light for my little sis.
Alee Moua i'd put it in my back window and every idiot driver would get the sun in their face that got too close
will be blinded since then.
little tip here, your heatsink will work quite a bit better if you do not spread the thermal paste out. it is better to let the component spread it out as it will naturally push the air out, provided it is just a single large dab in the center.
Rest in peace :/

Any invention without a rational purpose is basically art.
There is a rational purpose. You just don't see it.
