Iowa was always my favorite Xfinity race as a kid. I tried to get tickets for this year but it was sold out. 😂 maybe I’ll do Sonoma and Iowa next year. The racing looked great.
Iowa seems like a track that is due for some new paving. With a racing surface that is over 18 years old at this point the track is plagued by bumps, rough transitions, and areas with basically no grip. NASCAR had originally committed to not repaving this track before bringing the Cup Series event, but the surface was so bad in places that new asphalt was put down to cover the worst spots. So, the bumps and rough transitions between the old and the new pavement resulted in issues for many teams in tire test sessions, qualifying and most obviously in this race. With a grip level that varies greatly between the old and the new surfaces, as long as the cars ran in the new pavement areas of the turns they were “tight,” with good grip, that contributed to right front tires wearing out or blistering. The cars that tried to run higher in the turns, on the old pavement surface were “loose,” with not much grip, slower, not much blistering, and in danger of spinning out at any second. So this race was all about saving the tires and trying to manage tire wear, mainly because of NASCAR’s failure to repave the entire racing surface in advance of the Cup Series event. As Dale and Richard pointed out, three or four cars figured out the tire wear and grip issues and ran much faster than the rest of the field. Then some cars, #9, #24, #47, #22, went for consistency in tire wear, they all finished in the top ten. The rest of the field struggled by not taking care of their tire wear. At least there was some racing on track and some passing going on. Outcome?? Repave Iowa and you’ll have a much better race next time. Thanks to the King and Dale for their insight.
Well Dale said it…”some real bad cars kinda where our cars fit in.” I don’t know if it’s Johnson or Toyota or both that’s made them so bad, but it needs to be fixed.
Racing in the back of the pack gets how many eyes on it? The race was an overall joke! Larson dominated until he was taken out! Would much rather see battles for the lead, that’s great racing!
I like the way Dale says “Tie-yoda”.

It’s hard to believe him and Richard are both almost 90, they’re both still very sharp mentally.
