- Spinal implants hold an incredible promise - to help cure paralysis caused by severe spinal cord injuries. Meet the scientists and patients doing the impossible. Subscribe: freeth.ink/youtube-subscribe-...
Dr. Harkema and her team at the University of Louisville believe everything we thought about the spinal cord is wrong. We always thought that it was simply a conduit for messages from the brain. But her research suggests that the spinal cord itself thinks and despite a severe injury, the severed section can be reactivated through electronic implants giving patient back the ability to not just walk and feel but even regulate blood pressure, regain bladder control or even sexual functions. Now, they are using an off the shelf electronic implant to prove that the spinal cord itself can learn, giving patients back the ability to walk and feel. If these implants were to be specially designed as a spinal cord stimulator, it could be the most promising form of curing a spinal cord injury available.
In this video, we meet Dr. Harkema and her team, who are combining internal medicine, physical therapy, and functional electrical stimulation to treat paralyzed patients with spinal cord injuries. We also talk to paraplegics walking as they rehabilitate injuries thought to be life-long. We meet a spine surgeon who implants the electrodes into the spine in order to help the rehabilitation.

Do you think we'll cure paralysis in your lifetime?
Why not, it’s not like it’s a bad thing either way.
I don't know. I never really thought it would happen, but after seeing this it seems like it's actually a possibility? Incredible video, thanks for telling us about this.
@@RobertF- Our pleasure! Thanks for watching!
Yes! And with stem cells advancements, this means that we can expect the integration of new neurons in an existing neural network.
Like.. this is good news for paralisis, but also reshape the way people think about the potential to repair the brain.
We could cure alzheimer, rebuild the brain and then relearn things and start using the new neurons!
Thats amazing news far beyond spinal injuries !
I sure do.
Wow im paralyzed like him and hes standing up wow
I hope u can get an epidural stimulator, even if you have to travel abroad. I know in Switzerland 🇨🇭 they are doing this. God bless u.
I’m a neuroscience student and I’m really amaze by such discovery. I will definitely share this video to my teacher. Thanks, because It reminded me that what I’m learning can actually leads to concrete progress and improve the life of many people. It’s not only theoretical.
"I'm Stem, the system operating your body for you"
Upgrade anyone?
Casimir Funk i want a super hUman WEINER PLEASE
i am really glad to have your channel in youtube please complete and sustain what you offer
I care for a quadriplegic just like Jeff every day. I think this is amazing please continue. My dad had been left without use since 1991
One of my favorite Superhuman videos so far!!
Awesome to hear, thanks!
Awesome! keep up the great work! 👍
Thanks to everyone who joined the live stream! We're still here for a bit if you have any questions!
I’ve been aware of this technology for years but how do I actually sign up for it? They seem to tease people with hope but it’s never accessible. I’ve been like this for 20 years and it sucks to know there’s something that could be done but not for you.
Address to reach this health care centre?
Amazing! God Bless you!
Thanks, have a great day!
Wow! This is AMAZING!
Imagine what it can do for an incomplete injury
Excellent Work
Excellent news!
4:32 her ring blinks!!
I am a physiotherapist and I am SO EXCITED.
That’s amazing what they’re doing
Does this work for people with an incomplete spinal cord injury (versus just complete SCIs)? I have a C2 incomplete injury.
Sad to see how underrated this channel is.
So...how does someone with loads of medical bills from spinal injuries afford any of this? No way any US insurance companies cover any of this.
US medical system is f-ed, but at least treatment exists now where there wasn’t any before
Never use the Premier feature on RUclips. Not okay.
nivekv v why don’t you like it?
@@freethink Because it shows up in everyone's feed as a video but it isn't playable. Until RUclips fixes it so that it's visually obvious that it isn't actually available or they give a filter so users can exclude Premiers channels shouldn't use the feature.
@@freethink Stupidest idea ever. Kills viewership. Don't ever use this again.
@@KevinVanGelder Thanks for letting us know!
@@KevinVanGelder Just curious here but it has a giant "PREMIERE" label that I've seen clearly since release and I don't have any lab features or anything enabled.
Could you try something similar in spina bifida patients?
Are you making bridge current to bypass injury site of spinal cord or below level of injury.
where can we get treatment
This is amazing and it gives me hope for a cure for my niece one day.
And me for my uncle, though I imagine the timer's not ticking quite as hard for your niece.
@@timothymclean Probably not. She's only 25.
How I will get this treatment
is it also for bladder etc?
Awesome!
My brother is paralyzed from a bicycle accident in June 2020. How do I get him in for this treatment?
How can I get envolve in this work. I am EE with interest in this research?
Nvg 291. Trial starting July.
What are the cons to the stimulator?
Hello, I am from Morocco, I suffer from intestinal paralysis, I visited more than one doctor and did not find a solution. I lost my weight from 80 to 49 I don't have sugar and the gallbladder removed I feel heavy and fullness always in the intestines and food has been in the intestines for a year and I am still the same and no one understands me I suffer every day and no one wants to help me
How much it cost
Deeply inspired
I like the music background of this video, sound 80s and chilling. Name please?
Thanks! They are:
Forest for the Trees Ambient Remix by Blake Ewing
Powder (A) by KPM
Neon Road with Oohs and Ahhs by Prizm
They're all licensed from various music libraries so you may or may not be able to find them on your usual music service.
How can this help with stroke survivors?
Getting a lot of comments that people don't like the premiere feature. Does anyone want to stick up for it as useful, or should we just not do it again?
I have mixed about Premiere, great for the channel owner to be able to visit with the chatters and answer questions in real time. As a viewer the time delay & music on the count down is irritating.
@@weetreebonsai Do you think it would be better if we just premiered (read: streamed) it right at the release time, rather than posting it in advance? Seems like the main benefit is people can click to be notified, but apparently people aren't as into that.
Please don’t
@@freethink One of the issues with being notified here at YT is even tho the bell is checked most people do not get the notification. The advance notification is one of the benefits I do like so I can schedule my time to watch/participate in the chat.
Is there an electrical stimulation paralysis of the intestine
I thought I was the only one that got out after gotten my spinal cord snapped in half by people that were beating me up and saying that I felt non of the pain while it lasted.
Can you help me get this please I want to walk again too.
Times are a changing, this is amazing
Holycow the future is here that's hella crazy
Slip disc repair l4-l5, l5-S1 , c4-c7 disk protrusion
Just two days ago, I heard a story about a guy who killed himself @ 28 because he was confined to a wheelchair, and i told my friend, "given the advancements in technology and medicine, he could've been able to walk again, but he gave up." And now, i get this in my recommendations, and now I'm firmly convinced that he would've certainly been able to walk again.
@Austin Martín Hernández you're absolutely right. He taught us a very valuable lesson. And it is indeed, quite a sad story.
I wonder if all info is available for cure? Except more CASH is all the FIRM requires for their daily bullsht???
Woah this is crazy!!! Thanks for the premiere feature, it kept me hyped up for the video all day!
Thanks Alex! Our next project is a spinal implant that buzzes you whenever we have an imminent premiere :)
45 seconds in. Left leg???
This is crazy
A great video honestly
But 15k views in two years ?
I dont really get it
See the idea is very interesting
And the editing seems very nice
So why RUclips ?,my dear addiction.
This is the way i work remove the "Im" word add a space To impossibles here the real words "Im" Possibles focus congrat for that advance on cure !
Humanity's are stronger from far of what they know think from another level see all the angle that's angel impossible are impossible when we believe on something and focus there's nothing we can't accomplish
I was like okay isn't that obvious then i saw the vidoe uploaded date 2 years ago
I believe the paralysis can be fixed by giving stimulus to the spinal cord allowing new nerves to grow and connect to injured area allowing disconnected communication to reconnect.
Nerves don't regrow the way other tissues in the body do. Takes significantly longer (we're talking decades), and the spinal nerves and brain cells essentially never grow back so damage is, currently, irreversible and why approaches like the shown in the video are so groundbreaking and novel
Too bad DR Crusher didn't know about this. Probably could've spared worf a lot of trauma.

Very much appreciated!
These vids are always too short
Help sign me up living like this is killing me
Stay motivated
Check king doelo paralyzed
Its both the body and the brain
For sure
We are wrong about Diabetes also
Almost sounds too good to be true.
Plizz find the cure on paralysis, we know you will find cure.👍🔥
Most of this is research never to find any practical use. Progress towards curing SCI is painfully slow. It's like cure for hair loss, just round the corner and never to come.

Not possible
I wonder how many cures are available?
But, MONEY IS ANOTHER COMPANIES GAINS??? Maybe time will assist karma?
