Product Spotlight: Foxtrot Mike Upper Receivers

- Caleb is again joined by special guest Paul Noonan from FM Products to continue their discussion about what makes Foxtrot Mike products unique. From the outside FM upper receivers may not look that different from a standard AR-15 upper, but the real differences are inside. The entire operating system of the Mike-15 Gen2 upper is contained within the receiver - no receiver extension, buffer, or buffer spring needed. It comes with a Picatinny Rail Adapter that installs in a standard AR-15 lower receiver in place of the buffer tube. This lets you mount a Picatinny folding stock on your rifle without having to buy a special dedicated lower receiver.
You can get the Mike-15 upper with a 16" barrel or, for the shortest-possible carbine build, a 13.9" barrel to which you'll need to pin-and-weld a muzzle device long enough to achieve the minimum 16" barrel length for rifles. Could FM sell the 13.9" Mike-15 upper with a muzzle device already pinned-and-welded on? Sure, but they'd rather give their customers the option to choose the exact device they want.
Anybody interested in a "how to pin and weld" collabo video with Paul and Caleb?
The Mike-15 Gen2 upper also comes in a pistol configuration with a 12.5" or 9" barrel. The shorter the barrel, of course, the "spicier" the operation with a lot more heat, gas, and carrier velocity. The reality of physics is that the bolt on the 9" upper will last about half as long as the bolt on the 16" model. However, the 9" pistol upper is surprisingly gentle-shooting yet reliable because of how well Paul and his crew were able to manage the gas flow.
That handy forward charging handle at the front of the Mike-15 Gen2's handguard is non-reciprocating, so no risk of injury to your support hand from your own charging handle. It's also ambidextrous in that you can easily swap it to EITHER side of the receiver. What's the secret to how smoothly this charging handle works? There's some special geometry. Paul explains.
The Mike-102 upper receiver is an AK-AR hybrid. AK folks will appreciate the 102's simplicity, but AR folks will find it reassuringly familiar, too. The operating system is essentially the same as the Mike-15. Paul explains some of the challenges in designing an AR upper that works with AK magazines. Hint: the Foxtrot Mike carrier rides on rails, so it doesn't have trouble negotiating a large magwell opening. The better the magazine is supported, the more reliably it will feed. The mag seats very securely in the Mike-102 to promote reliable feeding. The well-made AK556 magazines from AC Unity that come with every Mike-102 are also a big help in achieving this dependability.
The Mike-102's baptism by fire was two days of intensive live-fire "testing" at Kalash Bash. Attendees ran 30,000 rounds through those guns, and they became so hot the FM folks had to handle them with oven mitts! The 102s performed so well they earned a lot of respect from serious Kalashnikov fans.
Teaser: Is an "x39" (5.45x39 or 7.62x39) Mike-102 in the works? Paul shares the answer with us! Спорт
The bromance is strong with these two lol.
*romance 🥰
@@liggerstuxin1 bromance is stronger. Mil-Spec if you will
Two enthusiastic knowledgeable young men. We need more product videos of these guys. Easy to follow and entertaining to watch.
Any chance we might see a FM-10 (.308) upper?
I have been wanting to get a Foxtrot Mike rifle for awhile... Now with the 102 it's just cool enough to push me over the edge!
Get a Dissent instead, my FM-15’s charging handle doesn’t even work, it’s a good idea, but absolute dogsh*t execution.
I f***ing hate my FM-15, I gotta find some idiot to buy it from me.
Definitely looking forward to the 7.62x39 addition. I will be getting one when they come out! I've had my 10.5" FM 9mm for long time now, it's always been reliable & a blast to shoot! I'm sure Paul doesn't remember because he talks to so many people. But I had contacted them before I made my purchase . Trying to decide what I wanted. He called me personally answered all my questions, got me set up & taken care of on my upper. From beginning customer support was awesome!!!
Paul is right about kalash bash, his booth was a ton of fun and him and Neal talked quite about about designs and the shooting was a bunch of fun
I have received INCREDIBLE customer service from FM products, with a 9mm upper and with a .45 ACP upper and lower. I can't say enough good things about how helpful they have been.
I love my 2 FM15’s. I’m still waiting for them to develop their 300 blackout versions, that’s what I REALLY WANT!!!!!
^^^^YES! THIS RIGHT HERE^^^^
A3 Tactical sells them
@@spitzabomb1089 thank you so much! I honestly had no idea. I’ve been searching Google and FM’s page and I have Never seen these before, so again thank you!
@@spitzabomb1089 man, FM doesn’t even have that they make this on their website. I’ve seen No RUclips videos of these either and I’ve searched & searched for FM videos and Google for a FM15 in 300 blackout. When did these become available? And I purchased a 9” 300 blackout!
@@yissnakklives8866 check the comments now. I just found out!
Love my 9 inch, had an issue with the bolt, after hundreds of rounds, FM fixed it fast and fixed for free. Great product, great customer service.
Down to 40 states and counting, get yours sooner than later.
Regards from Washifornia !
Yes! Do a pin and weld how to video!
That would be awesome.
Yes. Some basic gunsmithing instructional videos would be a LOT more welcome than some guy hawking his parts.
Thanks, Caleb!
Excellent video!
great job
Really nice products. Now if they worked on a Bullpup setup, that would be fantastic!
Look up Traid bullpup they make a lower for the fm15 upper
9:56 - 10:05 "Did we just become best friends?" "Yup!"
I reeeally wish you guys would offer different style charging handles, the current design just does not feel well when I try to grip it to rack my rifle, I love the gun and having the option to replace the charging handle shape would be amazing!!
Indeed. Changing is extremely stiff top the end and the tiny charging handle makes it very hard.
Thank you foxtrot Mike for not fully assembling the rifle. So many ban states out there that have banned completely built guns. It should be the norm to have all handguns, pistols, rifles field stripped into 2 receivers
Fantastic product. I bought two upper build kits cheaper than the single Barrel alone.
Since F.M. has successfully created the AR forward charging handle, system. I think that a handguard that resembles the Ever Popular MP5, tapered handguard, would probably be a big seller! Or even if they made a M-Lok bolt on, tapered or tubular hand guard, that would fit their existing rail systems. Either way, it would look bad ass, and provide a hand guard, from the hot barrel.
I've been on the edge with FM for a few years now. I started out over 5 years ago with PSA, Aero and the m&p 15. Although I still have some "poor" builds, I have graduated to only mid/high tier builds whether it's Geissele, ADM, Forward Controls Design, Colt, Hodge, Noveske, etc.
Going back to budget/low tier companies is a very hard thing to do but all 20+ ARs are just regular old DI gas systems. I've heard many mixed reviews about these piston uppers but I guess it's about time I get a BRN180 but start with a more affordable product. I just don't like that you need to change that part on the bolt every 2k rounds.
What part needs to be swapped at 2k?
@rmyc depends on the gun. Say you buy a DD. Their milspec triggers are very heavy. 6-8 pounds. Other guns may differ. You may want to change controls like mag release, bolt release, safety selector, etc. Most companies throw a basic spring and carbine buffer just because its the cheapest while allowing the gun to cycle. Some ARs come with an H2 but changing the standard spring to a sprinco spring can make a big difference as well. And many companies use a milspec charging handle. Many higher end companies have their own ambi CH and some throw a radian CH in the gun. Again, it depends on what you like and how you want the gun to run. You can even change the gas tube(not gas block) there are gas tubes that have smaller holes that fit over the gas port which helps overgassed guns run better, especially if you throw a can on it.
Hope that helps. If I didn't answer something then write back
@rmyc ok just realized I didn't answer your question. They talk about having to change parts every couple thousand rounds. They include several extras but what happens when you run out? You have to buy more and change that again. I forget what he said but I think it had something to do with the piston system. Rewatch the video and listen. I think it's mentioned a few times
would love to see you guys do a pen n wield episode.
Nice upper receivers!
Pin and weld the 13.9 in for me Mike!!!
These videos will make me go broke
Hoping there will be a follow up video on the BRN-180x39 upper taking the x39 mags!
Any chance there will be a bufferless 9mm upper?? 🤔
I need one 😊
I really need a way to have that slap feature and oversized charging handle for my FM-15 Gen 2.
My primary complaint has always been that
A) The spring for it is stiff as hell, compared to my Dissent it’s a completely opposite so being new out the box isn’t what’s goin on here, those springs are just firm.
B) Charging handle is too small imo
C) Charging handle doesn’t lock back in any way, and if my BCG is locked back and I go to try and use the CH to chamber a round it almost ALWAYS fails to fully chamber the round by a bit, with no forward assist it means I’m f**ked, in a firefight that means DEAD. The only way to get a round in the gun is to lock the BCG back and then hit the bolt release to send it firmly home.
That’s absurd.
All in all it’s made me hate my FM-15, it should be one of my favorite guns, but it’s just not. I liked the lower price point compared to other choices, but now it just feels like I got what I paid for.
If it can’t have these issues fixed then I’m just going to sell it to somebody who can stand it’s quirks.
I wouldn’t even need a forward assist if the gun worked correctly. All in all it was a good idea, but the execution was sh*t.
If SHTF I’m absolutely NOT grabbing my FM-15 if I even still own it by then, I’ll grab my basic ass PSA AR, my MCX, my Dissent, or even a cheap BCA build. I had high hopes for the FM-15, now I just wish I got a JAKL or another Dissent instead.
I advise against buying this gun or upper, until what I’ve listed above can be fixed for say Gen 3 it’s just not worth it.
Hopefully 6.5 Grendel is also in the works.
That’s stupid. Garbage round
Would changing the muzzle device on the 9 inch upper cause reliability problems?
If not for the SBR ridiculousness, I think most people would be in love with the 12.5 once they used it. I love mine.
I hate mine, charging handle is stiff af, won’t lock back, using it in any way NEVER chambers a round, only hitting the bolt release will do it. No forward assist so it f**ks me hard there, if you have a round not fully chambered all you can do is take the mag out, lock the bcg back, put a mag in, and use the bolt release.
The charging handle is just a massive piece of dogsh*t, it ruins the gun, I’ll be selling my 12.5 upper as soon as I can find someone foolish enough to buy it off me.
I can’t express how disappointed I was with it, great idea, absolutely terrible execution. If I can’t use my charging handle on my FM-15 then I’ll just go to my much more reliable basic AR I built from milspec affordable parts.
7.62x39 with modified bolt and barrel extension to beef up the bolt.
With the universal 1.375x24 rear hub most savvy suppressor makers include in their suppressors muzzle device doesn’t matter quite as much anymore. Generally though just throw a Dead Air Keymo device and you’ll be set.
What about 300black?
Foxtrot Mike, please, the people need a 7-9" 300AAC FM-15 gen 2
A3 Tactical has a 9" and 13.9"
Recently received my FM45 Upper
What is the tab at the rear of pic rail for?
Do you have 20" Wylde?
Gene Stoner's pre-piston AR-16 lives on. But with a better charging handle :)
What about the Wbp 5.56 AK mags?
A 5.45x39 upper would be great.
Are you going to do an 11.5 inch
Where are the slap mod uppers?
Can it take barrel swaps?
BRN 180 instead. Sig offerings instead
Never mind, the GEN 2 looks great
👍
I'd love another gun for my 5.45 ak mags. I hope you make a 5.45 rifle.
I'm wanting to do a 13.7 gun but piss on the pinn and weld, it's just stupid.
Love my FM15. I've been wanting to add a 7.62 or a 5.45 so that would have to come home with me. Now if you just made an 80% 102 lower...
Not the narcotic kind lol. Ol Kaleb knows a thing or 2 about a thing or 2
13.9 in fde?
5.45x39 PLEASE
send me a sample to try out
I think that would be referenced as downers... Lol
6.5 Grendel??????? PLEASE!!!!
Pmag is missing out on not making 5.56 AK mags
Got one AK Pmag and very much impressed. Even more impressed with AUG Pmag, IMO its much superior to Steyr made mags.
Magpul is the name of the company. PMAG is the name of their magazines.
Does FM have a 9mm bufferless upper with the Forward Charging Handle?
Yes!
@@brownells That's awesome! I'll have to find it, Thank you!
Shure it's great, sucks for you I've tried it and don't need what it offers. Not trying to be rude, but it's a space boat, great at first, but cost of repairs and availability make a cool boat a headache.
I bought the 13.9, waiting on Jmac customs to get back in stock. Had the upper come pin and welded, i wouldnt have bought it.
I'm looking at the 13.9 right now. My question it's can you still c clamp grip with the side charging handle?
“It’s the future”….. It shouldn’t be! This is the problem with people’s mindset. They simmer in the status quo. The near future should be A HARD SERIOUS PUSHING OF the SBR/SBS provision OFF the NFA!
That should have been the focus for the last few years. Not “saving the braces” (the status quo).
so why doesn't somebody do content on a 13.9" vs 13.7" 5.56/223 barrels, and the pros and cons of each, you could even compare them to a 14.5. I have yet to see any content of those two barrels lengths together it is always, one or the other.
Why is the sound so low and bad?
Pin and weld 🤮🤮
Dude lol. Not a single narcotic on the planet is an upper. lol every single one them is a depressant of some sort lol.
Your charging handle sucks. Come out with a round knurled variant.
Ot better a large folding handle so you can get a good grip without it being pocky.
Uppers are a stimulant not a narcotic. Pay more attention in DARE pls.
Cool, an AR platform that takes AK mags.
An answer to a question nobody asked.
Lots of people asked, years ago like 10-15 yrs. Nobody would make one so the askers, including myself, lost interest and went to superior wildcat calibers based on the 223 case. 25-223 with a 20" barrel pushing 87-90gr bullets at 3,000 fps whips any x39 with only a barrel change. 😊
Where can I buy these without going through a communist hoop jumping process? Or is the 2nd Amendment no longer in place?
In a world of their own... Its as if 300 black doesn't exist to them. Really dumb really stubborn.
A3 Tactical sells them
I’m curious to know if the 9mm variant is “buffer-less” as well. 🤷♂️
MAKE THOSE M-102 in 7.62X39.
