    And that's why The Damned are the best. Form an orderly queue to disagree....

    The Damned & The Stranglers for me, were both better musicians & had better songs. Both no nonsense bands.

    I remember when I was at school in the 70s a lad who had been a Led Zep fan on a Friday came into school with a safety pin in his ear the following Monday extolling his conversion to punk and he was raving about the Pistols. For me the rework of old rock standards on The Hot Rods live at the Marquee that was in the charts at the time and the new exiting music from The Damned and The Stranglers was much more on the button than the Pantomime Pistols. Pink Floyd’s Animals has more punk attitude than the Pistols and they didn’t nick Hawkwind riffs either.

    I get the point but it presupposes there's something wrong with having "a plan". Maybe more fool those that didn't have "a plan". The Beatles had "a plan" (topper most of the pop er most), The Stones had "a plan", The Who had "a plan", Hendrix and The Doors had "a plan". Everyone knows - and everyone knew - that "Punk" was a myth. We're talking about the usual rock n roll ramalama. Those who aren't / weren't sharp enough to have "a plan" end up in the pub with trays of drink, or, at best, two minutes of fame on totp in 1979. Don't tell me The Damned in the MCA era didn't have "a plan" (as God awful as they were in that era). 1976 to 1983 I love The Damned but it's just ludicrous to decry The Pistols and The Clash as being disingenuous for being mediated and packaged. That's the history of pop and it doesn't diminish those bands for being tethered in that way. Let's face it, the history of rock is built on a foundation of image. Being tied to McLaren and Rhodes, at the very least, ensured those two bands looked the best out of all the early Punk bands and, in part, that's what drew kids in. Leaving that aside. McLaren didn't write "Never Mind The Bollocks" and Rhodes didn't write the "London Calling" album.... and that says enough for me. Bands always end up being ranked in a pecking order for a reason. Feel The Pain!

      Lol i m a little late but.....
      Nothing wrong with a plan but he is decrying the attitude of 'trying very very hard to pretend that you are not trying hard.'
      He's equating it to the modern equivalent of hipsters spending an hour getting ready/dressing up, in an attempt to look as though you spent no time on it and didn t care. In a word disingenuous.

    The Clash were every bit as contrived as a Take That video. The Pistols were highly planned, as well, but the ends justified the means. There were a force for good, largely.

    • @Brewzerr
      @Brewzerr 4 года назад +1

      And with the Pistols it was largely a case of band vs manager. Or at least Rotten vs McLaren. McLaren did do a lot of scheming and manipulating, but most often it was at odds with what Rotten/Lydon wanted. I think Jones and Cook went along with Malcolm's plans because initially they thought Malcolm would make them stars, and Matlock to a certain degree as well, but Rotten's vision for the band usually won out at the end of the day. In that way, I wouldn't say that the Pistols were as carefully crafted as many would believe. At least not at the same level that the Clash were crafted by Bernie Rhodes.
