The Ghent University Choir performs Ashokan Farewell. 1000 Voices for Peace project, November 2014 Saxophone solo: Simon Allosserie and Adam Vanwildemeersch
The sun is sinking low in the sky above Ashokan The pines and the willows know soon we will part There's a whisper in the wind of promises unspoken And a love that will always remain in my heart My thoughts will return to the sound of your laughter The magic of moving as one And a time we'll remember long ever after The moonlight and music and dancing are done Will we climb the hills once more? Will we walk the woods together? Will I feel you holding me close once again? Will every song we've sung stay with us forever? Will you dance in my dreams or my arms until then? Under the moon the mountains lie sleeping Over the lake the stars shine They wonder if you and I will be keeping The magic and music, or leave them behind
Amazes me how far afield this music has gone. It began as something written after a music camp, I think in Pennsylvania in the early 1980's. Then just the music played on a violin became part of a long and very good television series on the American Civil War. That really propelled the music into popularity. Lyrics were added after that. And, now many performances show up in the original version on all sorts of instruments, and choirs and individuals sing the lyrics to the music.
John Meekins I first learned of Ashokan farewell while watching Ken Burns documentary of the civil war. Nothing captures the spirit of the sacrifice for The United States of America’s as this tune. Long live the republic! Long live democracy! May the human race find peace and prosperity always...
My compliments to you and your choir on a beautiful interpretation of this choral piece! What a beautiful arrangement of this song. Can you tell me who wrote this arrangement of Ashokan Farewell?
@@christurnell2363 Jay Ungar wrote the original song/composition not this arrangement of the song. An arrangement is taking some else's theme/song/ composition and imagining it in a new light. Thus this arrangement of Jay Ungar's original song.
This music is designed to bring tears, no matter who plays or sings it. God bless you ,Jay Ungar, for giving this music to the world.
