Amara said they have known each other for like five months and Vonshae did not dispute this. The issues Vonshae has requires someone you have known for years. Some people pile on the friend or best friend lable on you too much too soon. If Amara said those things about her baby she is absolutely wrong for that. Agreed. One of the biggest lessons I learned was that sometimes friends will not/and cannot be there for you when you need them the most. Case and point my college roommate who was my best friend for over 10 years, inherited money from a relative and butted heads with her mom, under who’s house she still lived in, rent free, and holed up in a hotel and just blew through all the money. She cut everyone off; me, our other best friends from college, her whole family that were literally offering her places to stay, rent free, no questions asked. She abruptly quit a paid internship that was ready to hire her full time. She just kept making terrible decisions, including sending money to people she’d never met overseas. Honestly, if she had just told one of us “Hey I’m working on myself, so I’m going to go off the grid for a bit, I’ll update you as needed.” We would’ve been like: “Great! Let us know if you need anything.” And that would’ve been fine. And of course it’s her life; she can let whoever she wants in or out of it. But her not responding to anything, was worse than her not just outright saying: “Hey this friendship is done. Goodbye. That would’ve still really hurt, but it would’ve cleared the air. Not responding to anything felt like we weren’t even worth the effort of even that. When family asked, as any concerned family would, about her sending money to people overseas, and maybe this could be a scam, she blew up at them and called them the worst names you can think of; manipulative, abusive, etc; cut them to the core.
About a year into this whole thing, my beloved Mom got diagnosed with Stage IV nonsmoking lung cancer, and passed away four months later. I was devastated, and if there was anyone I could’ve so desperately needed even just a phone call from, it was her. My mom treated my friend like a second daughter when she would come up to visit us on campus, as would her mom with me. When my mom was in the hospital about a month before she passed, in constant pain, she still asked about my friend and said: “Oh I hope she’s
alright, and finds her way back home safe.” After my mom’s funeral, her mom called me to tell me that my friend had come back home, apparently the woman who she was seeing, died of a heart attack and had no next of kin, and my friend had zero experience when it came to matters like claiming a body, so, she turned to her family. The very ones she said such terrible things to. She unblocked me, and sent me a text at her mom’s suggestion saying: “I’m sorry for your loss.” I was pissed. It sounded so impersonal; she knew my mom for over ten years. She had also lost her dad in high school to alcoholism (obviously a different death) but still the loss of a parent. Even a two second phone call would’ve been preferred over that text. It’s not like she didn’t still have my number. I was tempted to text things back like: “Oh, so NOW I exist” “Oh, so you’re not dead?” “Oh so you actually can work your phone” “Save it” etc; instead I just texted back “thanks” and she never replied back and I’ve never followed up with a text. That was at the end of 2022. Not sure if we’ll ever touch base again. To be honest, I sometimes feel resentment and jealousy that she still is able to hug and talk to her mom, whom she hurt so badly. Meanwhile I was so close to my mom, and she suffered such a terrible death that I still have nightmares about. I genuinely hope that she works on herself, I hope she heals and grows and takes accountability for how her actions have hurt so many people. And I hope she is better for it on the other side. But, it’s not her I wanted a text from, it’s my mom. And before my mom got sick, I would’ve been thrilled at anything from my friend after she went off the grid. But friendship should not and cannot be a one way street, and she burned the bridge we’d built
for 13 years. It hurts to lose a friend that you shared so many memories with. I would’ve asked her to have been my maid of honor. Ultimately though, it wasn’t me or any of us failing or falling short as friends to her. Whatever she was going through were things she was and still needs to work on. And in hindsight, she really mentally wasn’t in a rational place to be there for me or anyone else. Doesn’t mean the way she went about things was right. Or that the ways she went about things didn’t hurt any less for it. But she simply just couldn’t be there for anyone, or even herself.

It certainly left a wound back then, but I truly do hope she comes out of this better for it. And I did learn some very valuable life lessons from it about boundaries and expectations of communication for myself and others. When someone honors me with the gift of their friendship, whether online or in person, I never take it for granted. Ever. And I enjoy meeting new people and making new friends. And I will always do my best to be there for my friends as best as I can. The key I think is to remember not to stretch ourselves so thin we break and leave others to pick up the pieces. And, to give ourselves grace when we find ourselves needing a break or space because we’re not “okay” and that it really is okay to not be okay all the time. And it will eventually be okay. And that communicating, “Hey I need to regroup, I need space, I’ll touch base later,” really goes a long way with others. And that having bad moments mean just that. You’re having a bad moment, not a bad life, and you will get through this, because you a constant work in progress. Sending you love and light ❤️.
