So if your max bid is 102, and your tip is 2, there will be 100 Gwei available to pay basefee. Now if the actual basefee for example is 70 in the block your transaction is accepted, you don't pay 102 Gwei, but only 70 plus the priority fee of 2. So you saved 30 Gwei thanks to EIP1559 (compared to a legacy transaction).
Can i use this method to initialize my wallet on opensea?? Gas is now ridiculously high and im afraid the txn wil fail if i edit the recommended fee by metamask

We disagree with the Metamask. All the gas stations we have visited, the mosquitoes are everywhere especially near the trash cans at the gas pumps. That’s why we have chosen to overpay on gas because we don’t want to take a risk getting infected with West Nile Virus which can land ourselves to the ER (emergency room). There are not much mosquitoes present at gas stations with the higher price.
I actually have a certain time of day I choose to perform tx's and of course its not the most convenient time for me but I have seen how much I can save on gas. This is critical if you choose to use the Ethereum network in my opinion.

Yes. It's fine. That's just a prediction based on current network conditions and gas prices. If you set the gas price too low, it could take weeks for a miner to accept your transaction. There are sites that will show you current and historical gas prices. Demand fluctuates constantly; gas could be 150 gwei one minute and 75 gwei the next.

MetaMask has consistently been setting the gas limit at well over 400,000. Is this necessary? Even when gas prices are under 70 gwei I'm still getting projected fees close to $100 for a simple transaction.

Or is this something I can manually change since it significantly impacts the overall price to complete the transaction?
The gas limit depends on the type of transaction. It is usually being configured by the DeFi app you are using. If you configure it to a lower value, your transaction might fail.

Unfortunately with hyped NFT drops now, you have to go beyond rapid price on gasnow or you will lose your gas.
I tried with gas limit of 21,000 and it would always fail, and charge for the transaction fees. I went with what Metamask suggested at 77,000 with more expensive gas fees, and transaction went through.

How is it that banks transfer for free but now the modern system has fees?

Looks like issue is ledger and trezor don’t support eip1559 yet, so if using those with metamask it defaults to legacy.
Activate advance gas settings in Metamask
