As an owner of a 2022 E450 All-Terrain, I love the mild exterior and interior changes in this new version. This kind of vehicle is my favorite, Škoda Octavia/Superb Scout, Volvo V60/v90 CrossCountry, Audi A6 Allroad and this Mercedes E All-Terrain. In my company we had Škoda Octavia Scout, great car
PLEASE bring this to the UK and other RHD markets Mercedes!! I know they don't sell as well as SUVs but now Audi and Volvo have scrapped their high-riding estates there are no other options. I would 100% buy this no questions asked.
Thomas - great review & gorgeous location. Glad the build quality is better and loved that real engine sound under acceleration! Just wish automakers would stop trying to over think / over complicate instrument displays and controls. Otherwise, lovely job Merc!
As ever a great review, and I suspect Thomas has always had a soft spot for the E class. This is the first Mercedes for some years that I think I would want to buy. A station wagon, 6 cylinders, air suspension, and usable off road capability is just what I want. It’s a proper car rather than an SUV. I have not looked hard before now, but I think only Subaru have had a tradition in this segment and they do not do the E class premium experience. The only worry is that a PHEV version with off road might not be available. (I have a PHEV at the moment and with my journey patterns am getting serious EV usage.) The latest of iteration of the Mercedes UI/UX is still something I do not like, but the review suggests they have ameliorated some of the worst aspects with a bit more haptic feedback and less fiddly and small touch screen features. That said I would want to dial down or turn off the ambient lighting and have the spec with the minimum area of screen space. The central console without black lacquer is a great improvement and looks smart.
Don't forget Volvo with the XC70 or V90 cross country and Audi A6 allroad. They have been in the market before any all terrain. Anyway I would get the merc. It has to be delightful with the 400d engine. I hope they are keeping it from the previous model.
Wonderful reviews with lots of focus on the redesign which I think looks great. I had a 2020 E450 wagon, last before the All Terrain and I might consider this wagon in two years.
There is not a single reviewer that speaks for the new touch, or display buttons and there is also a strong case against them regarding safety. Yet they still go forward, desregarding the safety of the passengers and their feedback also. Just for the savings
@@Alextr951 No, you cannot change ride height in Volvo V90/V90 CC with air suspension, this is due to the fact that only rear axle has air suspension. V60/V60 CC does not have any air suspension option at all, at least not here. That 21cm ground clearance, give or take few millimeters with different wheel/tyre combos, is what you will always have. Only in the XC90 is the ride height adjustable, albeit very little. Cannot comment on XC60, no experience. In Volvos, the air suspension is usually more intended for rear axle self-levelling when towing or hauling heavy or unbalanced loads. In regards of the new E-Class All-Terrain, if the 16.5cm is normal mode ride height and off-road mode adds few centimeters, then it's borderline acceptable. If it's 16.5cm on off-road mode - forget about it, absolutely useless gimmick, might as well take regular E-Class.
I always put my coffee in the coffee cup holder in the center console and my water bottle in the door pocket. A very fine family car with big dog in back, roof box on top and off we go, great car.
Great review! I‘m happy to see the interior quality improved, which is my biggest issue with current Mercedes‘. I dont like that the trunk window is steeper more like a shooting brake, making the trunk less usable/practical in height for the sake of looks. Also i don‘t like the black frame around the grill at all as it takes away all the elegance, not sure about the rear light being connected without a light bar…the front grill being framed with black and especially the connected rear lights screams like cost saving to me as the grill would not be needed to get individually painted anymore and the rear lights come as one unit for all cars, similar to what VW is doing with the new Tiguan or the T-cross. As the new E450 has the same drivetrain and similar dimensions as the outgoing model, it would be interesting to compare them to each other and tell us which one you’d actually prefer/buy.
Yea these car makers crack me up. They think they are so cool charging these huge prices for these high end vehicles and not even thinking all this crap is getting ready to crash (houses, vehicles, commodities) and there will be a huge inventory of all this stuff being people will not be able to make these huge payments!
This could be my next and possibly last car. I don’t want an SUV or van; already own a 4WD Ram 1500 truck that just took me 13,117 miles out and back from the east to west coast of the USA, north through Canada to Alaska, then southeasterly across Canada and the US home. The E450 merits an opportunity to do the same drive, albeit at a bit higher highway speed in the USA. Great summary as always, Thomas.
How long will this digital system last, and it’s software be supported is my overriding question about modern vehicles. Great video.👍🏻🏴🇩🇪 I doubt that it will last as long as my W201 190E.
Hi Thomas! I would love to know of there is a built quality difference between this and the GLE since it is made in Alabama... I heard a lot of owners complain at least fir early model years.
Big M-B estates have always been superb. We had an old W123 300TD which was wonderful! So boxy and square you could fit anything into it. This one looks good, apart from the vast displays and unfathomable controls. Screen based HVAC just isn't acceptable to me.
They do - unless you've never rolled too fast off a speed bump that was more vertical on the backside than you expected, you'll get a nice topout clunk from the suspension as it runs out of downward travel to keep the tyres on the road. Topping out the suspension really only happens when both wheels on one axle have to drop into a dip at the same time as in most situations the antiroll bar stops one wheel from topping out if the other wheel on the same axle is being pushed up as in when the chassis is flexed across a diagonal.
6:57 Thomas, hasn't that been an uncomfortable and cramped position for your legs there ? It looks like your knees are touching the dashboard as well as the middle console at the same time. Can't imagine that feeling good after driving for a few hours.
The old e all terrain didn't handle and ride as good as the A6 allroad. This one may be on the same level of comfort but probably still less agile than the audi, considering the new e class became +200 lbs heavier with the new generation (same story with the new 5er unfortunately)
I noticed your knie is touching the cockpit console, which now leaves less space for legs then previous model. For me (192cm) a disadvantage I noticed immediately when I entered the car :(
The virtualise commands are meant to reduce the number of chips deployed on each car. It is the right way to achieve finaly a rationalisation on the electronic architecture
I don't get this so called all-terrain vehicle with low profile wheels, if those tire hit a sharp rock and pretty much you're stranded in middle of nowhere.
Look for the 4x4 squared version of the E-Class - it's the best off roader Mercedes have made since the Unimog 😀. As for the low profile tyres - writing off the wheel as well as the tyre hitting a pothole wasn't really a thing until idiots thinking low profile tyres were desirable, reinforced by marketing shitweasels happy to sell sabotaged products knowing they'll make even more from wheel and tyre maintenance after the fact took over the market.
@@BokiXI It's not just for looks (ugly), it's Merc trying to make it appear like an $UV to boost sales. I think it is having the opposite effect. Cladding does not enhance a Mercedes wagon... looks horrible. Affluent folks won't like it.
Now that is a motor vehicle! Can you store new parcel shelf under the floor? Is passenger screen actually useful? Do you get Apple maps on driver display yet? Can you get your feet under drivers seat in your position? Good to hear quality has improved. Hope UK gets non hybrid as you loose boot space otherwise
@@AOTanoos22 the EQ lineup does not include the all-terrain type vehicle, but I would like to see it included in the EQ lineup, since it’s perfect for my needs, not too large but still handles well.
@@EVsteve80 Ah i understand, unfortunately there is no all-terrain EV model coming in the foreseeable future. In fact there is no wagon EV planned as well in the coming years and you need a wagon to build an all-terrain model on. With Mercedes recently announcing they aim to get rid of wagons by the end of the decade i highly doubt we'll ever see a EV Mercedes Wagon, let alone an all-terrain model. Maybe Audi will make an A6 e-tron allroad as the A6 e-tron will be available as a sedan and wagon. Although be mindful of the steep angled hatch, making the trunk less usable and more like a shooting brake. Its unfortunate to see car manufacturers sacrificing practicality for the sake of looks with wagons and seemingly wanting to get rid of them all together and forcing us to buy SUVs, personally a huge fan of wagons and driving one atm.
I find it kinda sad that Mercedes nowadays focuses on superficial BS like ambient lighting, capacitive nonsense, motorized vents and ultrawide screens (which will totally kill the car's resale value) more than they focus on solid engineering.
My Audi A6 Allroad I just ordered is beautiful. I prefer the Mercedes wheels. Give you that much. You can keep the angry birds dash. Where did the wood go? The old e450 had a beautiful interior. Sad to see this.
Thomas do you know if the updated E class will apply for the coupe /convertible? Oh the beauty with the camera was that the daughter of Mercedes ceo you are with ? 😂
What is the best thing about the All-Terrain E-Class? Shouldn't it go off-road? Then it lacks a spare tyre, and why does it have such a large info screen. You can watch TV at home. In the car, you must look ahead and not be disturbed by large screens that show nothing.
Yeah I seriously hope they have fixed the interior build quality.. It has been completely unacceptable in a car of that price range for many years. Was on the verge already in the w212 and went south. The interior even in a w210, that was never considered a high point of MB, feels more solid than in a w212. And the successors since then we shouldnt even talk about...
top tip: the side skirts are another anti-feature for a saloon - your legs brush them as you get out transferring the dirt to your clothes. There's way too much BS with car marketing.
They are all paid by the car manufacturers, one way or the other. I don't take their word for anything anymore, just looking to see how they mask the bad parts of the cars they are testing.
Thank you very much for your interest in this topic. I also bought cars with animal skin leather seats before I did my research and got to know the industry. The most important thing is: With today's modern materials, you have nothing to lose, just to gain. You achieve the same kind of luxury and comfort or even better while having the same or better durability with less impact on humans, animals and the environment. You can use fabric/cloth, microfibre or leatherette. The classic approach is using oil/plastic as source material. Overall, a vehicle contains about 300 kg plastic. A car seat needs about 5 kg plastic. So the overall plastic share for the seats is very low and it is at this moment the most efficient way to produce a car seat. A couple of litres of fuel equals a car seat basically. So if you want to save oil/plastic, rather look at consumption for energy, fuel and heating and to other car parts than the seat. Note that animal skin leather also always contains a plastic coating for durability. However, long-term we should of course find raw oil alternatives. So going further, seats can be made from recyclables (e.g. from PET-bottles or old fishing nets) or even increased share of plant-based materials (like pine oil, canola oil or start-up materials like Pinatex from pineapple leaves or Desertex from cactus fibre or the mixed-plant-based Mirum, so be seen at ruclips.net/video/S1aNZeoatmE/видео.html). On a calculation base, by ditching animal skin leather from car interiors, the amount of emissions (CO2e) is reduced by 85 (!) % (www.press.bmwgroup.com/africa-dom-easteurope/article/detail/T0403389EN/on-the-market-from-2023:-bmw-and-mini-models-with-vegan-interiors?language=en) - and that is a very conservative calculation. So it is at this moment the most important thing you can do to make car interiors more sustainable. A good example for high-end luxury with ventilated animal free seats is the BMW X7 with Sensafin: ruclips.net/video/1pRNkW9nrrw/видео.html And the Kia EV9 with plant-based oil share: ruclips.net/video/6vXePQi_MAk/видео.html New leatherette materials can be superior in every aspect, even for cleaning: ruclips.net/video/u94YXJ72UTA/видео.html More and more natural materials are rising: ruclips.net/video/nRSsXEnwHDo/видео.html Also check out what the animal skin leather industry tried to with our channel: ruclips.net/video/nP_CvLlaFlI/видео.html For seeing how the animals are being treated and transported in the global leather industry, watch this footage: ruclips.net/video/tkjCAmq1_8E/видео.html Note that the footage is genuine and was recorded by a highly decorated investigative journalist in Germany I know myself personally. In a high animal skin grade, the animals are specifically raised for this matter. However even if meat is the "first" misuse case, the hide remains a profitable body part. That means: If manufacturers put animal leather in a car and you demand it as a customer, you give your money to an industry that earns money by oppressing humans, animals and harms the environment, you make them more profitable. Alternatively, you could support industries with your wallet which try to improve the sustainability of materials. Also, if you turn the argument around to "meat is the waste of the leather industry" you realize that it doesn't make sense (and is ethically doubtful) to discuss the primary use of individual body parts of mammals. Mind experiment: You are getting slain down on the street; would it matter to you if it was for your smartphone or for your purse? We cannot change what we have bought in the past, but with more information and compassion we can change how we decide in the future.

I'm pleasantly surprised with the build quality considering how wretched and unacceptable all of MB's recent cars are. Glad to see that they have soft touch where things like the new C, EQE and EQS don't. I'm surprised because the EQE and EQS are supposed to be the same or higher tier cars. I think the only good quality interiors are the new GT, SL and this E. I am not really in love with the design language as I was the last gen (I drive a w213/C238 e400 coupe). It's a shame the CLE has the horrible C class interior - I will have to upgrade to an 8 series or stay last gen. I think this could be a good option in the future if they get rid of the piano black seat-control-surrounds and #capactiveB.S. in the facelift in 5 years. I'm not really sure I want to wait that long though.

Was für ein tolles Auto ... tolles Design....its crazy beautiful!
Legs approved
Wander how does it compare to the A6 Allroad. Nicer interior obviously, at least aesthetically.
Very nice video
🙏👍
This thing is a beauty!
I enjoyed the video a lot! Thanks!
missing...ZZ Top's 'Legs' in the background 😉
This could be my next and possibly last car. I don’t want an SUV or van; already own a 4WD Ram 1500 truck that just took me 13,117 miles out and back from the east to west coast of the USA, north through Canada to Alaska, then southeasterly across Canada and the US home. The E450 merits an opportunity to do the same drive, albeit at a bit higher highway speed in the USA. Great summary as always, Thomas.
best greetings !
@@autogefuehl 3:50 yes that is what I will call them from now on haptic capacitive bs buttons hopefully they’ll change it in the next refresh
How long will this digital system last, and it’s software be supported is my overriding question about modern vehicles. Great video.👍🏻🏴🇩🇪 I doubt that it will last as long as my W201 190E.
I am correct when I say if you want to configure this car you pay the configured price yes?
Hi Thomas! I would love to know of there is a built quality difference between this and the GLE since it is made in Alabama... I heard a lot of owners complain at least fir early model years.
I know it's a Mercedes, but the exterior sure does remind me a lot of the original Audi Allroad. Not that I'm complaining, mind.
I'm not Merc but oh boy this state is a state of art.
Great review as always, but I detest the wheel arches don't match the body color. The black looks cheap.
I agree. Audi Allroad has the option to paint match those black bits with select colors.
So fugly and dont belong on a Mercedes wagon
Big M-B estates have always been superb. We had an old W123 300TD which was wonderful! So boxy and square you could fit anything into it. This one looks good, apart from the vast displays and unfathomable controls. Screen based HVAC just isn't acceptable to me.
W123 300TD a dream of a car 😍
15:55 Can you explain this more? Do you mean on rebound? Cars don't run out of rebound when grounded (not hanging in mid-air)
Very nice Merc.
Inline six, too!
Danke L & T 👱🏻♀️🧑🏻👏🏻
6:57 Thomas, hasn't that been an uncomfortable and cramped position for your legs there ?
It looks like your knees are touching the dashboard as well as the middle console at the same time.
Can't imagine that feeling good after driving for a few hours.
what's the real average fuel consumption in e450 patrol version?
The old e all terrain didn't handle and ride as good as the A6 allroad. This one may be on the same level of comfort but probably still less agile than the audi, considering the new e class became +200 lbs heavier with the new generation (same story with the new 5er unfortunately)
Is there a button to switch off passive lane assist permanently (without having to switch it off every time you start the car)?
Waiting for the sedan review. Nice review.
YOUR BIGGEST KENYAN FAN RIGHT HERE, AS USUAL, 19/09/2023
What’s the turtle symbol for on the driver display screen?
This and V90CC...I run a wagon only household. Hope these segment doesn't die out completely in the mid-luxury market.
In your opinion, better build quality E or C class?thank you in advance
100% e-class the new C-class has the worst build quality of any mercedes i ever sat in lol.
I noticed your knie is touching the cockpit console, which now leaves less space for legs then previous model. For me (192cm) a disadvantage I noticed immediately when I entered the car :(
Is that color factory set?
The virtualise commands are meant to reduce the number of chips deployed on each car. It is the right way to achieve finaly a rationalisation on the electronic architecture
Fantastic video. 😁
I don't get this so called all-terrain vehicle with low profile wheels, if those tire hit a sharp rock and pretty much you're stranded in middle of nowhere.
It's only for the looks. Nobody will go offroad with an E-class Benz.
Affluent folks won't like it.
man i really wish they had more wagons in the us imo
E-class All-Terrain vs. the GLE 350/450? Just a matter of taste or other?
Now that is a motor vehicle! Can you store new parcel shelf under the floor? Is passenger screen actually useful? Do you get Apple maps on driver display yet? Can you get your feet under drivers seat in your position? Good to hear quality has improved. Hope UK gets non hybrid as you loose boot space otherwise
Apple Maps in instruments only works with bmw
Excellent real world review. Btw I think CLE =D
How does it compare to zeekr 001?
This is one of the best money grabbers in this world. "A new car".
This is the perfect model if you want the SUV room but prefer the handling of a sedan. Will it be available as an EV??
No you have the EQ lineup for all EV models, this one will only come as a plug in hybrid.
Amazing
E class is the best ❤❤
I find it kinda sad that Mercedes nowadays focuses on superficial BS like ambient lighting, capacitive nonsense, motorized vents and ultrawide screens (which will totally kill the car's resale value) more than they focus on solid engineering.
Is is all terrain enough to survive NYC pot holes. Those tires look a little thin.
Wow, that lady next to you, Thomas, is really beautiful! Well done, man!
I prefer the interior of the 2023 model, for me it was timeless
ستبقى فولفو ملكة هذه الفئة 🎉
Is this better than a 3 series / 5 series estate?
yes, much more luggage space and better thought out luggage area.
You are the German version 🇩🇪 of Matt Watson 🇬🇧
will the US get the 7 seater version?
I'm wondering that too
No matter what people say...this thing, as a car...is the best car in the world.
It is a shame that the good old days of manual diesel cars are over. I will tostick to my super reliable 1986 E 300 D for as long as I can drive!
There is no E Class Coupe or Convertible coming. See…CLE
@@joetacchino4470 I think the CLE means couple/convertible E class.......same naming convention goes for the CLA
Very nice on the outside...but the inside??!! Is it a nightclub or a Mercedes? Looks very cheap with all thoose screens and ambient lighting.
What is the best thing about the All-Terrain E-Class? Shouldn't it go off-road? Then it lacks a spare tyre, and why does it have such a large info screen. You can watch TV at home. In the car, you must look ahead and not be disturbed by large screens that show nothing.
and they took away the rear 3rd fold seats.
@@TizzleT They should be optional. I removed it from my 2014...Useless
Produced proudly in werk Sindelfingen Bau46 😊
Hübsches Mädchen mit Kamera. Herzlichen Glückwunsch Thomas :)
How tall is your co driver
top tip: the side skirts are another anti-feature for a saloon - your legs brush them as you get out transferring the dirt to your clothes. There's way too much BS with car marketing.
They are all paid by the car manufacturers, one way or the other. I don't take their word for anything anymore, just looking to see how they mask the bad parts of the cars they are testing.
Nice passanger legs!
Poah! Dream car!
I prefer hard black rubber-plastic instead of the chrome.
Sweet
Fantastic review, Thomas. 👏 I think it's positively verbose, to say 'animal skin' rather than 'leather'. It gets people thinking 👍
It doesn’t. Leather is a sustainable environmental friendly material unlike the “artico” which is derived from plastics 😮and is lab created.
thanks for the support !
A good example for high-end luxury with ventilated animal free seats is the BMW X7 with Sensafin: ruclips.net/video/1pRNkW9nrrw/видео.html
And the Kia EV9 with plant-based oil share: ruclips.net/video/6vXePQi_MAk/видео.html

More and more natural materials are rising: ruclips.net/video/nRSsXEnwHDo/видео.html
Also check out what the animal skin leather industry tried to with our channel: ruclips.net/video/nP_CvLlaFlI/видео.html
For seeing how the animals are being treated and transported in the global leather industry, watch this footage: ruclips.net/video/tkjCAmq1_8E/видео.html
Note that the footage is genuine and was recorded by a highly decorated investigative journalist in Germany I know myself personally.

Think the Volvo V90 cc looks better !
Cute Mercedes.... but is no match to a A4 or A6 Allroad.
