Judging by the professionalism of the advert, it was probably early 90s. "This paper measures alkalinity. The darker the more alkaline" = before year 2000. "This specials paper shows scary bad chemicals." = After 2000. Also, look at the font used - Not squiggly sans-serif nonsense. Adult, Serif, Black font indicates before 1998. Then the music - Calming yet serious sounding music played on a piano. That's too 'creepy' for the modern people. Modern adverts use ukelelee or whistling with clapping annoying music. At a guess I'd say 1986 - 1994.
This version did not show the competitors, unlike US version. I wonder if competitor comparison is typical in 80's, 90's US commercial films? Also creepy piano sounds in "leading brands" scene, when it came to Dove scene the tune got happier.
You have to remember that is _was_ from a few decades ago now. People were't creeped out by everything like they are now. We're currently living in a supersticious age, where everything that can't immidiately be explained is lazily labled as creepy. eg: I walk into a room, and close the door behind me. A book falls off the she;l accross the room. 1990 - "Hmm, I guess me closing the door must have caused a current of air, causing the book to fall from the shelf." 2020 - "Uhhh that was creepy."
This was the version used in the UK and Ireland, hence the Lever Brothers logo. Comparative advertising is much more strictly controlled in Europe so Lever were probably playing it safe.
I wonder how old this ad is, I was still a kid when I watched it.
Released in 1992 :)
