On our way home we stopped in the village shop to pick up a few groceries, and my grandson proudly showed off his morning’s haul. I asked the shopkeeper what is the difference between a whortleberry and a blueberry. She told me, straight faced, “Mostly the spelling”. 😂

I love bil(blue)berries. This reminds me of an interesting story about them.
A few years ago, a friend and I went camping on an island that is almost entirely crown land, and access is only by private charter boat. We loved to camp and hike and picked a weekend. In my province, summer is about a month or two behind yours, we get much longer winters. So it was mid-august and a heat wave struck just as we setted out.
During a hike on the island, we had to start rationing our water before heading back to camp, and became very tired and dehydrated. Just as fate would have it, a clearing by an old radar post had a huge and massive field of wild blueberries, as far as you could see. Perfect ripeness. I couldn't believe just how many there were, it was incredible. We ate many, and it gave us the energy needed to return to camp. I still hope one day to return there and pick more properly to bring home. There is nothing quite like wild berries.

First I wondered: "What's a bilberry?", since I had never heard the word before.
Then you explained it, and I said:
    "Ah! Waldheidelbeeren!"
And then you explained they usually dwell on woodland or heath, and it dawned on me, that *this* is the root of their German name...
(Wood = Wald, and heath = Heide.)
And it took me only approximately 50 years and your video to finally get it...😅
(but I did get it! 👍🧠)

26:40 you're probably already aware, but in case you're not - you can clean out the leaves and gunk from the blueberries with a hair dryer. Simply put the berries on a flat tray or something with a non-steep lip or frame, then gently blow into them at an angle to blow away the lighter leaves and stems while (mostly) keeping the heavier berries on the tray.

  • @andrewcoates6641
    @andrewcoates6641 Год назад +5

In my neck of the woods (West Yorkshire) you often find cars full of people, picking berries like they are going out of fashion. However you and Jenny have introduced me to what would be a new twist to my diet, using a biscuit base. Locally it is more common than not to find bilberries served as the filling of a short pastry pie usually made in an old saucer, with a pastry lid and a dusting of granulated sugar added just before the end of cooking to partially melt it on top but to keep the grainy texture on top of the crust. Usually the saucer size of tart can be consumed either by a single individual and slightly less often it is shared between two people.😊

Bilberries are very abundant here in the Austrian alps (they can grow quite high up too) and they are absolutely some of my favourite berries, there's so much you can do with them and they are so much more aromatic than any store bought (American) blueberry.
Probably not as abundant here as in Scandinavia but still amazing, and if you don't want to collect them on your own local farmers often sell them too (they collect them from the wild) when they're in season (also freezing them works very well too if you want some outside of the season).

I went to Sweden in the summer a few years ago and some of the rural areas were very similar in their flora to our acid heaths in Wales and England! Bracken, mosses, heather, brambles and bilberries. But in the summer when it rained, it would clear up and the sun would come out and it would be bright and warm again. Here the rain usually precedes cold and grey weather that seems to go on forever. I don't know if that's similar to Denmark. You should come over and visit There's too many gorgeous places to mention 😊.

I'm actually from somewhere halfway down germany and going up those thousand-ish kilometers makes a whole world of difference, here it's super hot, sunny and dry. I actually really like how rainy and cold it gets in summer up there in comparison! My brother went to norway for two weeks last year and they were constantly getting rained on but wow was I jealous by how pretty that country is too... I'd love to see the british isles on day, so many unique biomes squished together on a single (relatively) small landmass, it really makes you jealous!

We saw a young black bear on the road going in about a quarter mile from our picking spot. The people who had invited me had never seen one before. We made a lot of noises as we picked to ward off any more bears (singing and talking loudly). They never invited me again thinking I was bad luck and attracted bears!

Looks like fun! Years ago, while visiting my grandparents on summer vacation, we would take a day and pick loads of blueberries on a hillside near their home. The land had once been part of my grandparent's farm so they knew where these plump, sweet berries thrived. Outfitted with our blueberry buckets, we'd scour the hillside, under the blazing hot sun, and pick our fill. When we got home, it was time to make blueberry cobbler with grandma, saving some berries for blueberry pancakes in the morning. A real treat was a simple dish of berries with a splash of cream and a sprinkle of sugar. Your and Jenny's pie looked delicious, a well earned reward. Thank you for bringing back lovely memories 🌸

It was really good to see Jenny's face on camera at last. I'm very camera-shy as well so two thumbs up to her. I have an elderberry in my front garden that's more ornamental than fruit- bearing. It does have a few berries but I usually leave them for the birds. However, I have barberry, cotoneaster and pyrocantha for them so I might steal the elderberries for myself this year.
I'm in the middle of replanting my back garden and you have given me so many ideas for that as well. I was already gong to have supercolumn apple trees (great for small gardens as they only need to be planted two feet apart), but now I'm having fuschias and honeyberries as well, thanks to your videos. The rest of the garden is going to be purely for bees and butterflies; hardy geraniums, lavenders and herbs. And probably catmint as we have two cats to please. Thanks again for your videos. I love that the food you cook isnt just for the sake of the taste, but also the memories made along the way ^.^ will you be doing anything with the seaglass from the seaglass battle as well?
Id love to see more of these types of videos, no pressure though. I want it to be fun for you and not forced.

We also have a lot of ticks in my area and first - full clothes always put on, second - we use repellent - it works good - we also spray bottoms of pants, sleeves etc. and a lot on necks... even if ticks jumps on us they do not bite and are easier to just brush away from clothes... and third - we both take shoots - they are free in my area :)

They have the best flavour straight from the bush but go exceptionally well in pastries (jagodzianki) or sweet dumplings. They are my fav!

This reminded me of my childhood. Here in the US we have huckleberries, that are similar. They would get us kids up early in the morning during the summer and we would pick pounds of them. Our mothers and grandmothers would make pies, jams and cakes with them. Us kids would be picking ticks and bitten by redbugs. Oh what fun!

I live in Pennsylvania (USA) and we’ve had a horrible year for ticks. It never got cold enough for a deep freeze this winter, we didn’t get any snow beyond flurries, and now we’re in a drought, so the ticks this year are just the worst. 😵‍💫 If my son and I are kicking a soccer ball (football 😅) around in our yard- ticks. If I walk my dog and stay on the paved sidewalk- ticks. If I take my younger son to the playground- ticks. If I pick my tomatoes- ticks. Ugh.

Oh, that looks real tasty, I must go out and pick what we in Sweden and Norway call blueberries. When we were little, we always were told not to pick the whole plant, but only take the berries like you did. Some years ago I learned that a blueberry plant can become around 30 years old. I now understand better why our elders told us to treat them with care, so as to get berries each year.

Nice way to spend one of the hottest days this year, watching this.Another similarity, berry, especially blackberry, cobblers in the US are occasionally made with American biscuit dough that has been sweetened a little and sprinkled with some sugar before baking.Jenny's crust resembles Graham Cracker Crust which is usually made with a pie with a creamy consistency like Key Lime Pie or cheesecake.

i dont comment on your vids but i just want to say how much i love your channel and your ”slow videos” on a platform that wants fast everything. dont change being random and slow and interresting and intelligent. as the saying goes ”well done that man!” or bualadh bus(pronounced boo la bus) in irish.
