A lot of people don't realize how important Family Man Barrett was to the success of The Wailers. He was more than just the musical director, he was the musical backbone of the group. Listen to the Wailers before Family Man and his brother left the Upsetters to join the Wailers, then listen to them after. The music is far superior to the early days.
Bob must have felt really bad to think he wasn't going to make it. But I read Rita and Bob's book and I was sickened. Cedella said many leeches around Bob like his so called friend Alan Cole and some gangster he knew weren't there for Bob and left as he was dying and they did ask for cars. Both Bob's wife and mother said so. But Bob's wife when she found out he was really sick got very angry the tour members didn't prioritise his health. That may be why Bob's family prevented Carlton and Aston from seeing Bob. Apparently Bob wondered why they hadn't come to see him. Don't know if they were protecting him. The band sued Bob's estate for royalties later but that's not to say they were suing the family. The record company makes a lot of money from his music and so they'll obviously want a share
They produced and contributed in the composition and so deserved some royalties. I'm sure the Marley family is not greedy enough to cut them off entirely.
Yea. I’ve read four or five books on this, every one has a slightly different tale or take, depending upon who you believe. Bob wasn’t into materialism or money (for himself anyway) and because he had no will, it turned into a massive bun fight after his death. He had a very tough, lonely, piss poor childhood and never really got over it. To me, the backbone of the Wailers Judy, Marcia, Rita, the Carlton brothers and to an extent the longtime musicians like Seco all made the band what it was. But how do you dish that out fairly when the GOAT has gone? Dunno. Bobs legacy has been manipulated over time into a money making commercial machine. He was a revolutionary and no poodle. I don’t think he would approve tbh.

Judy Mowatt said she was shocked when Bob died because she'd hoped to see him when he came back to Jamaica. He died en route 😢
