Your layouts are so artistically beautiful, you really nail the naturalist impression of something greater than simply modelling. Such as your painted backdrops merging with foreground features. Always a great pleasure to watch your updates.
Thank you very much. I think that modelling starts with observation and I enjoy taking time to just sit back and take in the area I'm trying to model, how the railroad flows and engages with nature. Cheers. -grant
Once again… masterful artistry!!! Loved the time lapse on the backdrop! Your talent there is something by itself! Beyond words! Thanks again for sharing with us!
Great update!! The layout is looking awesome, your layout and the one Scott Teague is building are two of the best examples of what can be done in N Scale!!! Keep up the great work, I'm amazed how easy you make back drop painting look!! 😁😁😁👍👍👍
Another outstanding video Grant! I’m trying to figure out if you inspire me or make me throw in the towel. LOL! Thanks for Making these videos. Take care.
nice to see someone else using tam valley stuff. frog juicers are quite usefull. i also use their decoders to power servos for all my turnouts. oh, and great work as usual.
I do like the juicers over using the Tortoise for frog power. I like to let the crews roll right up on the switch before bending the iron. I use the double juicers to power my reverse loops as well. Cheers.
Your layout is extraordinary, the scenery you have puts the viewer right in the scene. I don't have enough adjectives to describe how magnificent (there's one) your work is..
Thanks Mike. Backdrops can be just as much a part of the layout as anything else. The placement of objects on the backdrop is just as important as on the layout to get maximum effect. Cheers. -grant
I do agree with the backdrops. A painted back ground can make the landscape blend and look level with the foreground. Sometimes printed ones can look to busy or the angles do not match well. I will be using this technique for my N scale. Also with a Mother that was folk artist when younger. I watched and learned painting techniques to hopefully achieve the look that i am striving for. Once again good video update.
Indeed. I think it's also important to realize how the backdrop being 2 dimensional is viewed in conjunction with the 3 dimensions of the scenery and account for different viewing angles. Sounds like you've got a good background for success. Have fun! -grant
Yup 500. I ran out of places to stash them so it's time to get planting! I find the process of making them relaxing. Great way to spend some time outside in the sun. Cheers. -grant
Spectacular, as always, Grant! Your backdrop painting and tree placement create striking scenes. Great update and wonderful run-bys. SO REALISTIC! Thanks and cheers, Mike
Thanks for the update! I can’t believe that’s N gauge, the detail in your layout is amazing. I was trying to signup as a member, but I don’t think I can from the UK. RUclips doesn’t give me the option.
Thanks so much, I really appreciate that. Much more work to go to get the scenery finished along Island Lake. I have several members from the UK. Are you trying to sign up from a mobile device? If so you can join the channel from a PC and then have full access from all devices. Cheers. -grant
I really wasn't a fan of N scale until I came across your layout - It's a great example of how much realism you can capture, even in the smaller scale! If you aren't familiar with my layout, I invite you to check out my On30 layout by visiting my channel, I just uploaded a January '25 update video as well. Looking forward to future progress here!
I watch your Channel and you do nice work. N scale is just smaller that's all. If a person does the same techniques and has patience like Southern Alberta it can look the same. A lot of you tubers are just sloppy , rush progress , have no plans and use cheap products .
Could you do a video explaining how you painted your custom sar locomotives what paint you used and how you did it cause i have some costom locomotives i want to do and would like to see how tou made yours look so nice
Most of my equipment was painted many years ago using Floquil laquer based paints which are unfortunately no longer available. I do want to do a roster video and touch on how to come up with a believable proto-freelance scheme which might answer some of your questions.
Idle hands Pete... Haven't had much "work" for a few months. Good news for layout progress! Nothing new for Christmas. Twas a re-gifting year... Cheers!
It will be scratch built from styrene. I started a build video on it a few years ago, got the deck built before other projects took over. Hoping to stitch it all together here before the summer. -Thanks for watching. -grant
Well done!!!! Some of the time I couldn’t even tell it was a model. Very good work.
Thank you very much!
You are right about backdrops. As an amateur enthusiast, I find the painted backgrounds compliment thr foreground and make them pop.
Thanks for the input, I really appreciate it. Cheers. -grant
tortois are the way to go, great switching motors. thnx for the update!
Yup they work great. Cheers.
Your scenery is absolutely beautiful and very inspiring. I am looking forward to the next update.
Thanks, lots more to come. Cheers.
Fatastic work! Painting a backdrop looks so easy when you are doing it ☺
Thanks a bunch. Backdrops are easier than most think. A lot of it is knowing how to mix colour and technique. Cheers. -grant
Beautiful work Grant.
Thanks a bunch. -grant

Great video, thanks for sharing your backdrop scene technique

Amazing work, beautiful layout. Love your trees!
Appreciate that! -grant
Crazy nice aspen trees...it is all great!
Appreciate that! Cheers. -grant
The retaining walls look 👍
Thanks John. Trying to get a common look by matching them with a pair further up the hill. Cheers. -grant
Beautiful scenery - how many Aspens did you build over the Summer, 500? Wow! They look fabulous on the layout. Thanks so much for sharing!
Yup 500. I ran out of places to stash them so it's time to get planting! I find the process of making them relaxing. Great way to spend some time outside in the sun. Cheers. -grant
Looking great. Very inspiring!
Really appreciate the kind words! Cheers.

Thanks a bunch!
Incredible, following for awhile and truly enjoy the updates
Thanks a bunch! -grant
Gorgeous. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks V. Treating this as a warm up for Crowsnest Lake. Cheers.
Oh so sweet ! When I begin to lose interest on my layout, watching this gives me a kick in the butt. Nice work for sure. 👍
Thanks a bunch, glad you liked the vid. We all need a good boot now and again. Unfortunately most of mine are steel toed...... Cheers.
Awesome work. Looking forward to starting my new N Scale BNSF layout this year
Thanks a bunch. Have fun with the new build! -grant
Great stuff Grant. I will be "borrowing" many of your techniques as my V3 layout gets put together following our house move.
Appreciate that! Have fun with the build. Cheers.
Beautiful 👍🏻😀
Thanks very much!
This is awesome 😊
Thank you! 😄
@@SouthernAlbertaRail I’m still working on getting my aspens to look like yours 😄
Takes a few to get the swing of it for sure. Have fun!

Good products, practiced techniques and an un-rushed approach go a long way.

@SouthernAlbertaRail thank you so much
Amazing work as ever. You have really stepped up a gear this modelling season. 😊 Did Santa bring you any new rolling stock to review 😀

Appreciate the 👍👍s!
Amazing work as always, just don’t get “Collin” to paint backdrops. 🤦🏻♂️
Hahahaha....... Thanks Pal!
This is n scale? Amazing I assumed it was HO scale.
Yup N scale. Thanks for the input, really appreciate it. -grant
