    Proxies are fine as long as they don't break the casual nature of the game. Generally speaking, when someone is throwing proxies of Mana Crypt, Mana Vault, Gaia's Cradle, and similar cards into every deck, the games stop being casual.

      @@failfurby Your answer is in your reply - "not everyone plays strictly casual games". There are some stores that host unofficial CEDH events that allow a certain number of proxies because you need to have so many expensive pieces to remain competitive. However, CEDH is a different format from EDH.

      @@failfurby You're 100% wrong. EDH start with some guys throwing together janky decks with big splashy cards that you'd never be able to play at an actual competitive standard game. It took off because people wanted to play magic, not rush to win by turn 2 to 4.
      From there it mainly developed into a format where people played to have fun with their decks. There are different tastes on what's fun, but cEDH is called that because the win-as-soon-as-possible, competitive mentality isn't appropriate for EDH in the first place. If you want that, there are plenty of other formats - Pauper, Standard, Pioneer, Modern, etc.

    Our playgroup is fine with proxies, we allow all proxies of cards people own. And we rule 0 when someone wants to play proxies of cards they don’t own. Personally I use mtgprint to make sheets of cards and print them at my local print shop. That way they still look ok and most of the time people don’t even notice. That feels best for the play experience.

    MTG is a great game, my group plays kitchen table MTG, we don't adhere to ban lists and just make the decks we want to play. I typically proxy cards to make decks before I buy them. If I'm going to spend potentially a couple hundred dollars on a deck I'd rather know it's enjoyable and flows well before I buy those cards. While MTG is concerned about proxies, I think they should be more concerned with counterfeits. Cards people are trying to pass off as the real deal.
    I also love using proxies to update older cards to be full art etc to bring them into line with a deck that has newer full art cards, it really unifies and brings everything together! So far proxies have made me go from 2-4 decks to now owning more than 20 decks all using official MTG cards, since I've been able to test run the decks at the table with my friends and family it's really helped me commit to buying new cards.
    On the other end of the list we have a buddy who can't really afford to play MTG, he's got a lot going on in life and has to worry more about rent, his entire MTG collection is proxies unless they were gifted by the group. We'd much rather play games with him than exclude him and I'm sure he'll likely end up eventually replacing his decks with official cards when financially able but even if not I'm just happy to play games with him.
    Our house no-no against proxies is no proxies for cards outside our means. (In the case of our buddy that can't afford MTG right now, it's more important he's there than his cards being real.) If we would never be able to buy it because of how absurd the price, we wont print it either. All of us are low-middle class. I think the important thing is we are playing the game and giving WoTC money when we can. The cards also aren't ever going to have effect on the market since they have different backs and art on them than the card would ordinarily have.
    Happy to hear any thoughts or hate, I understand this can be a touchy subject, I just ask you keep things professional. I've always thought the most important aspect of the game is the gathering not the monetary parts behind making that happen.

    There's no proxy rule. Aa long as the group doesn't mind, then it's a non-issue. If the group says no proxies, then use a different deck or find another group. I like owning the cards myself. But to each their own.

I know they would buy them when their situation changes and im totally ok with that.

  • @Damiancontursi
    @Damiancontursi 8 месяцев назад +2

    I used to do various method like that to proxy cards. But nowadays in my country buy mtg cards has become very costly so I just:
    1. print the entire deck on thick glossy paper
    2. cut the cards
    3. use a round corner cutter
    4. sleeve them all so I don't have to deal with something like a mtg back or print something on the other side
    Its obviously not the same thickness or has the same flex than a real mtg card, but for commander decks its even easier to shuffle.
    Fast, looks good, easier to shuffle, save money, everything is a win.

    I used to make foil proxy cards by cleaning bulk foils with acetone (which was very tiring), then I got in a, now deceased, site to make the layout of the card and inserted an image that I'd feel went well with the card. Then I just printed it in a clear self adhesive vinyl.
    Then Ikoria came and I started to do my own "Nickname" cards
    Now days I found some holographic posterboard that is nice and thin so after pasting the adhesive vinyl it end with almost the same thickness as a normal Magic card

Personally getting into magic just a couple months ago and trying to build a deck and seeing how much certain cards are especially some needed staples the money stacks up tbh and then I’m just like well if I don’t add this in my deck it won’t be as good. Right now I’m talking to someone about purchasing a jeweled lotus, deflecting swat, demonic tutor and ragavan and his price for the 4 was $200 and it’s mostly in line to tcg so I can’t be mad about it.

  • @AugustAMcClung

    I would like to offer my personal philosophy on proxies. I don’t mind if someone wants to proxy another copy of a card they already own. This is merely saving time with a play group who would totally not accept any proxies because the player would not need to re-sleeve. Now, the reason I think they should own the card first is because in addition to a casual card game, it is also a collectible! If there are nothing but proxies then the original would lose value. To prove this, imagine the logical extreme - no cards are bought when released and all are proxies. Since no originals are bought, they would all become as valuable as the proxies. In addition, WotC would not be incentivized to create new cards - because no one would buy them since in this logical extreme all are proxies. That is bad for the game and community. That is why I say buy a card first and proxy the next.

    I think proxy is a good thing for commander and other magic formats at the lower levels. That being said, at one point in my commander magic life I bought some power. Mana crypt, force of will, other fast rocks. It set me ahead in many games. But didn’t make me have anymore fun in my playgroup. And I realized if I prioritize fun over wins that things would be better for me and my experience as well as other players I was trying to have fun with.
    All in all play to your pods power and try to have fun.

  • @pj-wille
    @pj-wille 8 месяцев назад

    I've never been upset by proxies except when it's really hard to tell someone's board state. Otherwise the real issues always come down to: "Did you create an overpowered deck for the pod you're in?" and/or "Is your deck just a pile of boring MSG cards instead of some specific interesting flavor?"
    Often times Proxies are associated with these issues because when you have unlimited access to every card in the game people tend to get corrupted and just slide in more and more OP cards each time they lose a game because "obviously my deck just wasn't good enough" until their win rate reaches 50% or higher.
    They don't start with trying to pilot their deck better or identify issues with their mana-curve or card choices because why would they need to? Every problem can be solved by the same set of $30+ cards
    "Since my deck is just too slow so lets toss in a jeweled lotus, mana crypt, mana-vault, dockside, etc.!"
    "I sometimes don't get all my colors, instead of running better ramp, lets toss in ever $500 multi-colored land that fits me"
    "I don't get enough card draw...lets add a rhystic study!"
    "Cyclonic rift cuz I'm blue!"
    "My win condition keeps getting stopped, lets add Force of Will and Deflecting Swat and Teferi's Protection and..."
    Proxying isn't itself the problem, but people struggle to control themselves when doing it so it gets a bad rep.

    So only a minute into it and I have to say since playing magic since 2001, and commander since release in 2011… i play proxies for TWO reasons… 1- I already have the +$40 card in one of my cEDH decks and putting it in another and don’t wanna drop money on another one. 2- use it to play test new or different cards in a deck before buying it. It’s cost efficient and perfectly legal in a non sanctioned event and if your pod or play group DOESNT like it they can deal with it (normally I play my cEDH deck instead and wipe the floor with them by turn 3), and that normally does the trick. 👍

    I think people can use proxies responsibly. But i do think people overly use proxies and justify it by claiming every deck NEEDS true duals, wheel of fortune, gaea's cradle, etc.which is just not true. Its easy for people to just use proxies to push power level up as fast as possible.
    This channel is dedicated to budget decks being good decks so i dont think people need to make proxies for the most part
    I also think people should be cognizant about the effects of not supporting their LGS that proxies inherently causes to some degree.

      Finally, the voice of reason. It’s an unwavering sense of entitlement that causes people to obtain/create counterfeits with the belief that they should be able to play whatever they want just because it exists.
      I should mention there’s a distinction between proxies and counterfeits, but it’s a very thin line.

    • @GallantLee
      @GallantLee 8 месяцев назад

      Proxying doesn’t ruin your LGS. I spend heaps of money at my LGS, but I cant remember the last time I bought a card over $10 from them. It’s still cheaper to buy them off individuals on facebook marketplace. Still official real cards. I have 3-5 copies at least, I’ve lost count, of every fetchland… but proxy more for all my decks.
      There is a huge difference between counterfeits and proxies. A proxy cant pass off as a real card and it’s purpose isnt to. It’s designed as a substitute.
      A counterfeit is trying to pass off as a real offcial mtg card.
      I personally am against counterfeits, but there’s no limits for me with proxies… i have an expectation that they are clearly recognisable and legible. I have a preference that they have similar/same artwork of the cards they represent so the table has an easier time playing the game.

      @@GallantLee I said above people can use proxies responsibly. Making permanent proxies for cards you own so you don't have to swap them in and out of decks excessively would be one of those ways.
      I hear and see all the time people who say they just make proxies for everything and won't spend any money for cards, I know people who do this and I give them lots of crap for it. Those people are actively hurting LGSs because they aren't spending money to support them, and yet go play using their spaces for free. That is entitlement and causes harm for alot of small businesses that are LGSs. Half the time they claim it's to fight WOTC, even tho that's not how the singles market works. You may be supporting your LGS, and that's great! Continue to do so. But you can't deny that people do use proxies to spend 0 dollars on cards at LGSs, and you can't deny that it hurts LGSs.
      This also says nothing about my other points about power and deckbuilding

    Proxy is fine as long as you get the other players permission. This is esepeically fine if you are testing out a deck and need to know if its worth spending the money to get the actual cards. The fact that we have cards that cost 100+ its absolutely fine for a person to test. NOW if this is a PAY event where you can win a prize. Then proxy should ONLY be allowed if you are doing so because you have the cards but dont feel like pulling them out of a deck or have them in protective cases and cant afford to actually use the real card but you DO OWN THEM. Im not going to play a guy in a pay even that doesnt own the cards he plays...

I understand what you’re doing here with encouraging enjoyers to make their own proxies, but folks are taking it as free rein to make, obtain, and play with counterfeits. These counterfeits inevitably make it into the secondary market and innocent purchasers and even sellers end up getting scammed.
