- Some thoughts on the controversy between [major corporation] and the artist Shag, and what that means for Disney (and me) in a broader sense.

They call it cultural appropriation, I call it cultural appreciation
I find it interesting who and what D decides to pick fights with. They contradict themselves with their own propoganda for profit yet shame and shun the people that give them that profit.
Sometime around 9-10 years ago, this culture developed in which shaming people for not wanting to buy your product became an acceptable marketing strategy. I don't understand it, but here we are.
@@MonsterKidCory It's become a manipulative/bullying tactic. They're draining fans out of money and not keeping quality/quantity.
The dragon burning was prob my personal highlight of entertainment in years 😄 I wish I could have seen it in person.
Thank you for your great comments!!!
Just because white people have fond memories of the tiki craze doesn't mean that it's not problematic or based on a careless use of another culture's religious iconography.
Imagine if Tokyo Disneyland did something like The Creepy Cathedral, where saints' statues come to life and gibber Latin at the visitors. I have a feeling Catholics would react poorly.
There literally was a Catholicism-themed Goth bar in Tokyo called Christon Cafe where they, among other things, held fetish events. Invariably, INVARIABLY, progressives attempting to make parallels do so out of things THAT ACTUALLY EXIST. "Oh yeah, they should ban the Bible!" THEY DO BAN THE BIBLE. "What if they made some offensive anti-Christian art?" THEY DO. And invariably people like you think it's oh so terribly witty and original and thrilling and revolutionary to make shitty anti-Christian art, so whatever. Your point is disingenuous. Tiki isn't even ANTI-Polynesian... It's just a reflection of Americans' own encounter with the cultures and landscapes of the Pacific.
Subscribed, because even though I’m not much into monsters your take on Disney is spot on! I love tiki, Shag, and Classic Disney and it’s good to hear someone standing up for it. Thanks!
Thanks for the sub!
Tiki's are awesome.
This cultural appropriation crap it's stupid
This is totally unrelated to the point you’re making but at 11:58 you mentioned the Zorro show Disney did in 1957, I personally would LOVE to hear your take on the pre-Action Comics #1 superhero characters, seems like a topic you’d get a kick out of!
Maybe someday. I used to have an entire blog on Victorian-Edwardian sci-fi, which is right up that alley.
Was the mug that company 's property?
Isn't everything cultural appropriation to some culture. Why is it that all over the world everyone wears a very similar type of clothing at this point. There isn't very much uniqueness or culture displayed. It's being lost very quickly
They really do.
Wtf it's a tiki mug that what it supposed to look like
Without so called cultural appropriation humanity would never advance. I would say I appreciate Tiki but I am not into it. Disney didn't bring me to it. Growing up.in Ventura County in the 70s and 80s did. I have been a fan of Shag for 20 years.
This is false news. They never ordered those mugs. 😂
I'm going to trust what Shag said about how Disney recalled the design.
Omg you are so dramatic, get a grip!!
Vandalism is an insane Word
Me: "They keep doing stupid things so I guess I won't buy their stuff anymore."
You: "OMG STOP BEING SUCH A DRAMA QUEEN I CAN'T EVEN!"
So what exactly is the non-dramatic reaction supposed to be here?
@@MonsterKidCory no youre fine, just saying vandalism is such a reach. Meow!!
