    Okay, I came back to this after looking something up. Not only have they "modernized" this, apparently characters are being removed. A Liverlips McGrowel was deemed offensive and removed. These kids just don't get the charm of some of these things, and start making accusations about things that I just wish they would seek to learn more about instead. They say they are open minded about content until it doesn't fit some puritan standard.

    KING KONG (1933) is my favourite film of all time and has been for longer than I remember. I first saw it in 1971 when it was rereleased in theatres in its original uncensored form. I was seven years old. I’ve studied and researched the film my entire life and have written about it extensively for Scary Monsters magazine. I’m well aware of the racist perspective of the film, from everything from the slave-trade analogy to the inappropriate costumes worn by the natives of Skull Island (the island wasn’t located near Africa). Noble Johnson’s native Chief (as written subtextually by Ruth Rose) was not a savage brute, but a wise, experienced, diplomatic leader who had clearly met strangers (perhaps even white men) before. This is made evident by 1)- his not ordering Denham and is landing party killed at first sight, especially after spoiling their religious ceremony and 2)- his willingness to barter for the “golden woman.” Economic trade was part of his past experience and vocabulary, as he knew that his tribe could benefit from trade with strangers who have previously visited the island. The Chief understands diplomacy enough to allow Denham and his crew to leave the island peaceably, only to later confer with the Witch Doctor and plan the strategy that would ultimately put Ann Darrow on the sacrificial altar. The viewer of the film can easily determine this by simply reading between the lines of Ruth Rose’s script and recognizing the subtext. Unfortunately, many modern critics fail to recognize this and condemn all of the natives as pre-Hayes Code “ungawa” racism. What Rose was trying to get across in her script back in 1933 was that the natives weren’t generic savages, but the last of a civilization who did everything in their knowledge and past experiences to survive. Yes, the costumes were all wrong, but that’s the fault of RKO’s costume department’s limited 1933 mindset and budget, not the fault of the script or native characters. Much ado has been made of the scene where Kong strips the clothes from an unconscious Ann Darrow. It’s been interpreted (mostly by white critics) as the rape of the white woman by the black man, the ultimate victory. She is at the time, as previously mentioned, unconscious as he begins to tear away her garments. She awakes half-way through the act and reacts in subjugated violation and horror. When I first saw the film as a young child, that interpretation never crossed my mind. I saw an innocent and curious Kong, playing with his new doll during the first moment of the story that he could actually sit down and relax. He sniffed at the torn garments not as a rapist or a pervert, but as any curious animal with heightened olfactory senses would. The film is an epical work of art and can be interpreted from every perspective. I can easily finagle KING KONG into any conversation about any subject. I, personally, have never walked in Cooper and Shoedsack’s stylish-but-comfortable 1933 shoes, so I can’t speak for their intentions, deliberate or not. We all have our own subjective interpretations of the film, and that’s cool, it’s what keeps us talking about the film currently in 2024. That’s art, folks!

    Fantasia was probably the most important film of my childhood, alongside The Lion King and possibly Bambi. I absolutely hated it the first time I watched it as a very young child. I distinctly remember asking my parents when the ads would be over half way through the first part and the horror on their faces at that! I didn't watch any further the first time. The second time was when I was sick; childhood me picked up a lot of bugs. I also watched movies on repeat as a child especially when trying to sleep - I think I watched The Lion King for a year straight once. We chose Fantasia due to the music and I finally watched the whole thing and it started to grow on me. Any time I was sick as a child, it was the film we would put on. And then when my life got pretty bad as a child, it became my comfort film. I came to watch this video today because I'm feeling horribly unwell in a way I haven't felt since childhood and my... absolutely legal films and anime site put a paywall over the film and I have no other way to watch it right now. This video was a great alternative and I'm so happy to hear that someone else loves this film as much as I do. There was a lot of information here that I didn't know about! Finding out that the film was a controversial failure honestly makes me like it that much more, I have always loved obscure things that other pass off. Honestly though, thanks for creating this video. It's been a great watch.

    To be fair, that statement at the beginning part does show the whole "Hollywood isn't original" that, to me, is too done to death and annoying. is nothing new since it happened before in the past. Though many of us know that the issue is that original ideas require a lot of buy‐in to both the producers and the audience. Like with vaccines or special education schools for people with mental disorders. As well that we still live in a business first, creativity second. Since it doesn't matter if they are going to be praised or despised, what matters is how much profit it'll make in return. Otherwise, it'll just be seen as a waste of time and money if it won't make back the costs. But on a note related to this video, there were some films that I do wish that were based on books, or did a technique similar to this film, Lady and the Tramp, and Pagemaster. That's what I hope with Toy Story or any of Pixar's films.

    The one where the Dinosaurs from One Million B.C. showed up in a Tarzan Movie always made me laugh. I remember there was also a Giant Spider in Tarzan's Desert Mystery, It was certainly that film's best special effects creation. This may sound a bit comical but Tarzan got bitten by Cheetah on the Set of Tarzan and The Jungle Boy. Mike Henry was bitten on the face by the Chimpanzee playing Cheetah in one take. He had to be rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery. He received numerous stitches across his Jawline and the wound eventually became infected, So Henry spent months on antibiotics and pain killers while recovering. Fortunately Mike Henry survived this ordeal and was able to move on and continue his career. The Chimp wasn't so lucky, After being deemed too dangerous to work with humans it was eventually euthenized.

    Only the first six Tarzan films by MGM were first rate Productions with substantial budgets. The RKO Series were in the mid buget range, and got progressively worse as they went along. The first two Tarzan films had some Graphic Scenes that had to be toned down a bit before they were released. The first film showed Natives Sacrificing people to a Vicious Gorilla who would tear them apart. The second film-Tarzan and His Mate-is infamous for a Scene where Jane goes Skinny Dipping in a Lagoon with Tarzan. The Censors at the time were incensed by this and imposed a number of Restrictions on the Tarzan films so that something like that wouldn't happen again.

      These Tarzan films went through several changes over the years. The earlier Movies had a sense of authenticity to them, Especially with the Trader Horn footage. They also seemed to be aimed at an adult audience, Especially with the Scenes of the Native's Sadistic Rituals and the Racy Scene with Jane in the Second Film. By the time they made Tarzan Escapes you start to notice a shift in tone, Jane is given a less revealing outfit and the Violent Native Rituals are toned down. In Fact there was an entire sequence in this film where Tarzan leads a Safari through a Treacherous Swamp and along the way their attacked by Giant Bats. The Native Bearers are carried away in the Claws of these Creatures and Tarzan fights several of them off with a Spear and a Torch. Well apparently the Scene was so intense and violent that It was completely cut from the film. The only thing that exists from this sequence today are some Production Fotos. Anyway the Tarzan films became more kid friendly after Tarzan Finds A Son, And Cheetah was allowed to have more Comedic Scenes. Interestingly the Savage Black Natives in the earlier Tarzan films were completely absent in most of the RKO films.

    • @edwardhyde-vo8zb
      @edwardhyde-vo8zb 15 дней назад

      The Bloodthirsty Savages in the early Tarzan films were basically NPCs, They were just like Indians in the Westerns from that Period. They were Bad Guys and there was nothing about them that made them remotely human or relatable. It's funny that you mentioned the Bat Sequence from Tarzan Escapes. I'm not sure who came up with the Idea of Cutting Out what was probably one of the most exciting action scenes in a Tarzan film, But whoever It was should've been fired and run out of the Movie Business. I imagine the Censors at the time really came down hard on this film, And the Studio completely caved in. It's too bad the Scene was lost and that we'll never be able to see It.

      Which is funny because THESE are more like a generic, off-brand version of the monsters than the actual ones. One of the arguments that simps for Universal make is that the likenesses of Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, and Lon Chaney Jr. are owned by the estates and Universal would have to pay licensing fees for them (which they already do for Mario and Harry Potter). However, Universal ALSO has a style book with renditions of the monsters that still look like they do from the movies, just with a generic likeness (for example, the toys by Jada).

    As a classic monsters fan for over half a century I was so looking forward to this new land where I could actually step into those old movies in person. Now my hopes are dashed. Universal you blew it in favor of modernism. Why cant you just give the fans what we want? Why do you have to reinvent. Its a no brainer.😏

    How about updating the look of ET, The Mario Bros ,Harry Potter or Back to the Future? I wonder how well that would go over for all THOSE fans? I dont care about any of those properties, so of course I would,nt care. If your not a CLASSIC monsters fan then you wouldnt know how we feel.

    I was glad I was able to join the live. It was great to get your take on Godzilla X Kong. I like all the Godzilla movies. I definitely need to revisit Shin Godzilla. I really love old movies as well and have been watching a few silent movies lately. Anyway, love the channel.

    Okay to me they need to figure out a tone, imo scooby doo vibes so it's family friendly spookyness that can be really scary to kids. I also think the scooby doo vibes helps the timelessness because yeah scooby doo updates with the times for things like cell phones but it's a world with both advanced robotics experts having to resort to cash crimes while there's still towns with no telephones scared of the lord living in a local castle in no named usa state. Now lets figure out attractions and i'd do ones that instantly come to mind first. Phantom of the opera, I know some don't count it because pre dracula and silent film but it's universal and Lon chaney should count imo. Phantom of the opera attraction literally writes itself, it's a moving theatre peformance where it starts in the opera hall and then the phantom sabotages and you are taken out of your seats by a guide trying to "protect you" and you go on this path to learn about the phantom and eventually stop him. Invisible man should be a escape room where guest are trapped in a room trying to escape and you use nice camoflague, secret carpartments and guessing where people will pay attention to for the illusion. From a hand pushing someone that is near the secret capartment, a item moving or being missing when people aren't looking, etc. The creature from the black lagoon should be similar to mermaid shows where you are able to look through a window into the underwater life (obviously this one will be the hardest but I couldn't think of anything that fit the creature better for a theme park attraction). Frankenstein is about getting supplies to build a monster because to me the attraction is the wild mad scientist lab that it made iconic and you can have a crew of scientist helping out the guest while the head scientist is able to ham it up as the head Doctor frankenstein. Wolfman attraction should be a secret scare house that is a forest that is walled off (like you have to go greatly to the edges of the maze to notice) and there are werewolfs trying to get you with your goal is to escape the forest maze. Finally onto dracula he's the host so there would be multiple actors portraying the same dracula (think mickey mouse being in multiple places) and is who is showing off this monster land to the guest. To me it's perfect for the guides of certain attractions such as the museum and some attractions that they don't have someone better to guide. Cause I imagine the frankenstein attraction will either be by a scientist, hunchback, or dr frankenstein himself, the wolfman attraction can be either a mystic trying to get you to not fall victim to the werewolfs or monster hunters. Monster hunters should basically be the security to help park guest if anything happens. Also for the section of being made up to look like a monster sooooo should be dr jekyll and mr hyde themed with you "having your inner monster unleashed". Honestly my one hang up is the mummy with their setting being so different from the others it would feel out of place so my one thought is to base it off of the mummy's ghost where the film takes place near a swamp and you are dealing with cultist that summoned mummies in order to lay the ground work for pharroh's return (they gotta make the main mummy look more unique because the designs from the movies are still too generic so i say embrace it with some generic mummies while there is one grand unique mummy).

      The Phantom is my favorite monster but I would like a slow dark nattraction where you are transported from the opera down to the bowels and catacombs under the opera. a boatride like pirates.

    I have a bad suspicion about this. They have made a product for the new generation, and they will reboot the failed Dark Universe to attract this new audience as stories based upon this product, not the classic monsters.

    This is like shitting on phase 1 MCU for not being 100% comic book accurate. Although, I do 100% agree with you on that whole “the monsters are the outsiders” segment. I laughed when I heard him say that, but I doubt it’ll mean that they’ll start praising Dracula. I think that one dude was just including some of his own BS beliefs into the video.

    I will re evaluate some comments i had on a previous video: i fall into the category of somebody who really enjoys theme parks, and i think epic universe as a whole is so immersive and is what disney used to be, i live in orlando and for me this is great bc its gonna push disney to do better and consumers win at the end of the day. As a theme park lover the immersion and rides look great, there is also a creature of the black lagoon ride planned as an expansion to this land which im also excited for. Overall i think they did a great job with an immersive theme park land and ill throw my money at it That being said i understand how fans of classic universal monsters are upset w how they didn’t do yall justice, if disney completely “reimagined” indiana jones or another franchise i love id be pretty upset w it, so my bad if i came at you sideways on another video, for theme park lovers this is a win and i fall into that category and couldn’t understand why a monsters fan would be disappointed. But now i get it, my bad og

      And that's all totally fair. I think from a theme-park perspective I'd still be undersold on a roller coaster and a Kuka arm ride, but my disappointment really comes from it not being the classic monsters at all. It wouldn't even be so bad if they weren't sticking our noses in it by proclaiming how these are the classic monsters and not "reimagining" Mario, Harry Potter, and How to Train Your Dragon.
