This was my dad's ship in WWII. He was an aviation machinist mate. He died in 1997 so he never saw this video, but he would have loved to see the old girl. He loved that ship!
My father was on this ship in WW2. One person was chosen off each of the ship and they picked my father to be at the peace treaty signing at pearl harbor. Thank you so much for sharing this video. I wish my father were alive to see it today.

the peace treaty to end WWII was signed aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Harbor on 2 September 1945

Sept. 2, 1945 was the Formal Instrument of Surrender signed on the battleship USS Missouri BB 63.
Old Sister Sara, a sad ending to a great ship. One of three pre war aircraft carrier's that made it through that war. USS Enterprise, USS Saratoga and the USS Ranger. It's a shame that at least one of them was saved to be viewed today.
Admiral Halsey, among others, fought like hell to save Big E (CV-6) from the scrapper. No enemy attack could sink her, but post war budget cuts sure have a way of doing it. Sad story really. At least her legacy has lived on through CVN-65 and soon to be CVN-80. There needs to be a drive of some kind to name CVN-81 Lexington, CVN-82 Saratoga, CVN-83 Yorktown, and CVN-84 Ranger, or any combination of those names to hulls. Maybe even CVN-85 as the Hornet?

I'm too old to dive at that depth any longer but it's great to have that video to watch to bring back memories.
Having served aboard a Carrier (CVN-70) I must say that, while things have changed a bit since then, much is recognizable. Salutes to the former crews of the Sara, and the ship itself, for all they accomplished!
Thanks for sharing one of the best WWII ship dives that I've ever seen. It looks like they discarded the old girl fully stocked with even the munitions and planes. I've heard that the government wanted to see what would happen to a combat ready ship. It amazes me to see how she sank to the bottom with her deck up in its normal position. There was even a big jar sitting normally on a work bench. I appreciate the great skill taken not to stir up sediment that would have clouded the visuals. Really a professional job with everything. I got a kick out of the screen shot of the two commodes at approx. (14:15) with the caption beneath them stating, "Officer's Quarters".
What’s amazing is, I served in Sara CV-60, There doesn’t seem to be much of a difference in the heads on the two. I guess toilets and urinals didn’t change that much over the years.
My Dad was aboard from 43 all the way to the end at Bikini he often regaled us with stories of the great ship and the daring do of the gallent crew (both in battle with the Imperial Japanese Military and drunken barroom brawls with marine and allies alike) to see this footage and compare it with his stories and pictures is very rewarding I can almost hear his voice once again
My wife's grandfather served on the Sara and was involved in her second torpedoing. Then became a plank owner in the Intrepid aka The Evil I. He served 31+ years thru 3 wars.
Donald Parlett jr I had an uncle on Sara CV-3, and his older brother was the navigation officer on intrepid. I was a part of the team in Philadelphia Naval Shipyard that sent Intrepid to NYC in 1980+/- timeframe. What a small Navy.
It's so amazing to see these once powerful ships beneath the waves! The mighty Sara!!! The sea certainly reclaims the metal and hardware that came from the earth in ghostly fashion! From this veteran, my hats off in honor of all those lost at sea during war! God bless them all!!! 🙏❤

My grandfather was on this ship, he was sad to see it sunk but understood it was a better fate than scrapping.

It's cool seeing this shipwreck explored because I know nobody died when she sank.
@Hal 9000 Huh? These ships were sunk in the Bikini Atoll nuclear tests. What Odin is saying ts that it's nice to be able to explore a wreck without disturbing the dead. Wrecks like Arizona can't be explored because they're war graves, whereas the Bikini wrecks are perfect for exploration.

They didn't come to a sad end, their testing went on to be used by future generations of sailors in shipboar cbr attack and decon procedures.
And what a great end ... the ship is alive!
Or at least the ocean is alive, around the ship.
A ship of war is now a ship of life.
Its as dignified of an "end" as can be. Its guns silent, yet its history still speaks today, and as we can see from these fellows, its halls are now a museum, its hull a home to a host of life. Wonderful share!

My Father was a shipfitter and diver off the Saratoga. Hie of course is gone now, I wished he could have seen this. He was one of the crew that was attached to the Atom Bomb tests at Bikini Atoll, and as a shipfitter, was one of the first on after all the CrossRoads tests, which unfortunately led to his Cancer and death.
So much to see, that`s what makes this both interesting and different.

it is tradition to keep names of historical ships in service on newer ships. SARATOGA is a example of this, This SARA was named after the Revolutionary War battle. She was sister to the LEXINGTON which was sunk at Coral Sea. They were identical that in order to tell them apart was the SARA had a black stripe pai t
They were converted from Battlecruisers rebuilt on the stocks as Battlecruisers were found to be a flawed concept.
@@SvenTviking Actually all six Lexington class ships were cancelled as battlecruisers in compliance with the Washington Naval Treaty. Lexington and Saratoga were instead allowed to be converted and completed as aircraft carriers under the terms of the treaty. The remaining four ships were either not laid down or were broken up on the building ways.
Amazing footage. You guys clearly have skills to keep from stirring up more silt! I guess I am a bit surprised to see so many tools and equipment on board and such. It doesn't look like they took much off the ship before sinking it. (but that is the military, "thats too heavy to move, scrap it and we will buy a new one")
Aaron, the ships where deliberately fully equipped before hit by the nuclear bombs in order to assess the impact of the bombs. That is what makes diving there so amazing.
Just making up stuff again on RUclips are we ? These ships were completed loaded, minus living human beings of course, for the Atomic Bomb tests. Feel free to do some research on "Operation: Crossroads" before you just start spewing pit fantasy facts. The Navy has *never* been in the habit of scuttling fully loaded aircraft carriers. Many of the planes/equipment was within broken or outdated. Stop spreading made up crap.

With the atomic bomb testing in the area, I wondered if any one of them
were affected by any form of radiation desease. I pray they are all safe. Its
people like these keep the memory of the times and the people who perished on both sides
of the conflict.
@@kalabao52 As there are no such things as 'atom' bombs or 'nukes', i'd say it's a pretty safe bet to say these divers are perfectly fine !
@@kalabao52 After this much time most of the radiation in the wrecks has deteriorated or been washed out. I read that there is still some lingering radiation in or around the battleship Nagato.

The Bikini test fleet was hit with two Nagasaki "Fat Man" type weapons, one an 'airburst' close to battleship Nevada in the center of the formation, the other an underwater burst which did far more damage than the first detonation.

What a great experience that must have been! Is that melted / blistered paint all over some of the rooms or just rust? And melted equipment (radio set?) on the tables at 13:12?
Are these ships still Radioactive. I saw some Videos on the Island and the Fruit on the Island still to this day had radioactivity in them and the plants from the Bombs.

Also, I'm pretty sure that jar was planted there by someone. No way did it ride out the sinking without falling.

Saw from one presentation of the Saratoga that the stern has now collapsed, and that one part of the hanger ceiling also has fallen.
yes, unfortunately time takes its toll on these ships. When I was diving there last, we could see the collapse of the hanger deck. (i think in my 2014 video it is visible.) One one day the fighter plane was in pristine condition, the next day the hanger deck had collapsed on it. whilst that is sad, it will also allow new penetration entry opportunities to the wreck. As of today, the enormous engine room has not been penetrated as currently there is no chance to enter it from any side or any level. (without using cutting equipment)
@@carstenunderwater1 Aircraft are parked in hangars. Hangers are used for storing your clothes in the closet.
its not a blacksmith shop but a machine shop. I see a southbend lathe, abor press, planer mill horizontal mill.

According to the Bikini website the ship belong's to the native people.
Think the equipment would be beyond repair/salt damage. Friend of mine diving W.W.2 wrecks of the coast of Papua New Guinea back in 1978 found aircraft. He salvaged twin machine guns from one of the turrets. After awhile, the gun disintegrated into a pile of rust been exposed to the air. Had he have left it on the aircraft, probably survived to this day. Cheers from 🇦🇺

The USS Saratoga survived a mass kamikaze attack of 35+ planes during the war. Now that’s incredible.

what camera and light did you use
+Danny Jasnic On my 2013 trip I used a Sony HD in a Amphibico housing with a 110deg wide angle lens. Lights are Hartenberger HID Video Mega D2 Video Lights. On the 2014 trip I used a Black Magic Cinema Pocket Camera, but that footage isn't up yet...as well as the GoPro 3 Plus 3D for the inside of the Dentist Room on the Saratoga. (Also not uploaded yet...)
This Diver seems to be at home inside this wreck. Did they have maps of the interior of the ship?
For the USS Saratoga we indeed have and used the original construction plans. Prior to deep penetration we lay lines in order to mark the way back to the exit.

I get the feeling you’re on about Lexington, as Sara was not sunk by enemy action but postwar in a nuke test? Or was he adrift from another ship after a posting?
Fighter_pilot_16 well he was color blind so he could join this ship he wasn’t on the Lexington and the cv-3 was sunk by a German u boat maybe he couldn’t tell

Great that the ww2 warships are given life albeit thru a camera lens but...as I'm unable to connect with the dive experience. can some map referance be showing the diver's position relative to the area filmed? Lady Lex and other recently downloaded film are quit interesting but for more referancing purpose a "pop-up like" item can offer simple factual statement's. Whereas my own laymans knowledge is not eluminating the benifitual message. But outstanding vid nonetheless.

+navythomas8 Yes. She was assigned to operation crossroads in 1946. She survived the Able Nuclear test (air burst), but sank after the Baker test (underwater burst).

over the years all the radioactivity has been washed away. official studies and measurements show that apart from a slight increased recordable radiation under the bow of the Nagato Battleship, all levels in the water are the same as everywhere else. unfortunately the same can not be said for above water. Bikini Island still has heightened levels of radiation especially in the coconuts thus still making them uninhabitable for the Bikinians.

What a terrible waste of machinery and metal. The mill's a lathes alone would be so wonderful to put in the hands of miachinists or even schools. The planes would be collectors pieces. I know, she outlived her service time, but, damn! I wonder if she carries any radioactivity from the two H bomb tests?
How many "USS Saratoga" ships did the US have? One on the bottom of the Bikini Atoll, another one got scrapped in Texas. Both were aircraft carriers. Don't they only use the same name once, within a reasonable time period?

Names are reused. A new Enterprise has been authorized, only 5 years after the CVN-65 had been decommissioned.
6 USS Saratoga's in history. One during the Revolution, one during war of 1812, one in the mid-1800s, one that was a later name for the cruiser USS New York and the 2 carriers that you referenced. USS Ranger has been used 10 times, though a couple were never completed.

They originally intended for JFK to be a transition ship between the Enterprise (CVN-65) and Nimitz (CVN-68). She would have had 4 or 6 nuclear reactors (instead of 8 like Enterprise/CVN-65 had) but been at least twice as expensive to build with nuclear power so she was finished as an oil-burning ship. The JFK is actually shorter in length than the Kitty Hawk class carriers.

This must be a government expedition. I can’t believe the government would allow diving on wrecks in a nuclear detonation area to civilians.
Which Government? This atoll is part of the Marshal Islands. As long as you pack it in and out and can afford it, anyone can wreck dive here. Just don't drink the water.
It is sad that they could save the wannabe Lexington and Yorktown but the Enterprise and Saratoga were just treated as so much excess baggage to be used up and discarded.
This is why prices are high we threw our materials into the ocean instead of melting it down , waste not want not !
