I Tried The "WORST" Rated Food in Madeira Portugal 🇵🇹

- Madeira food is great and there are some great Funchal restaurants serving traditional Madeira food. But I found an article on Taste Atlas which claims to show the 4 worst rated food in Madeira Portugal. Unsurprisingly, this triggered me, so I decided to film a video called the 4 worst rated dishes in Madeira Portugal to see if they are right or perhaps it was just clickbait and these are actually the 4 best foods in Madeira Portugal.
The 4 Madeira foods are:
1) Broas de Mel - the Madeira honey biscuits
2) Espada com banana - The very famous tourist dish of black scabbard fish and banana
3) Milho Frito - Fried cornmeal cubes which you can find everywhere in Madeira, it is a very popular Madeiran food.
4) Bolo de mel - Madeira honey cake made with the local sugar cane.
Let's go and eat some Portuguese food in Funchal and see who is right on this Funchal food tour.

a bit a history, the UK fish and chips where introduced by the Portuguese and Spanish around the 16th century, we call it “pescado frito”
Haha don’t tell them that, it may cause some controversy
@@TheJoeyPtrue the fish and chips was introduced by the Jews who fled the inquisition some went to the Netherlands others London
Although the chips are a French thing the pescado was originally made of codfish which the English at some point used to catch and sell to us!!!!
I want to say how much I love your videos, you come across them in such a natural way and they are very informative too, keep them going.
I love Madeira, we went there two years ago and fell in love with it, to me it looks like the perfect place to live and maybe one day we will. Enjoy your stay in Madeira.
Another great video Joey! Very glad I found your channel. Can’t wait to see more content from you soon.
Welcome aboard! Glad to have you here
Madeiran here.
Broas de mel, Bolo de mel and Milho frito are 100% traditional Madeiran food, these are as Madeiran as "Fisherman Poncha" (lemon+honey+rum).
The Scabbard fish with Banana (and often Passion fruit sauce) is absolutely a tourist dish that only tourists eat.
You won't ever find a local that has fond memories from the "old times, grandma use to make me some espada with banana".
We do eat battered scabbard like that without the fruit, often as a sandwich (there's a tradicional little pub in the building of the farmers market famous for those).
There's a lot of bullshit about Madeira online recently, I guess it became trendy, so HUGE props to you, for actually knowing your stuff and calling it out. It's totally disgusting even though it looks really good on the plate.
You even got the "just tear the Bolo de Mel with your hands" right.
Well done mate!
Hardly anybody in Madeira eats Bolo de mel 😂
@@willie549 Oh we do.
@@somedudeAPS No you don't
@@willie549 I am eating it literally now you doofus.
What we eat only on Cristmas is the "Broas de mel".
Do you know what the spanish call "Tapas" for aftenoon snacks or light lunch? We often even include bolo de mel on ours.
@@somedudeAPS you must be the only one 🤣
We don't
Great video as always. Thanks for sharing. ❤
You are so welcome
I really don't know why foreigners get surprised with anything related to food in Portugal. Our culinary is one (if not the best) of the best in the world, either in variety and quality.
I do love it, but you would place it above Indian, Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Mexican, Vietnamese?
@@TheJoeyP I like them all, but in terms of variety, while those mentioned seem like an ensemble with a certain style, Portuguese cuisine is a medley performed by an orchestra.
Ignorancia...o grande mal do seculo XXI😢
@@TheJoeyP well according to tasteatlas Portugal Cuisine it's top 4, i do place some dishes from other countries above portugal, but in general Portugal cuisine it's solid, all depends on tastes
Absolutely right.
I would say the best in the world.🥰🇵🇹
You need to have the traditional sauce with fried onions for the tuna, then you can dip tour cubes of milho frito into the delicious gravy!
Good shout!
In the north part of the island thry also add pork crackling in the milho fruto which is delicious
Oh yum! I’ll have to look for that
My family is from Madeira and I've had espada preta ( Black Scabared) but I can never remember them talking about, let alone cooking Espada Preta with banana.
Looking forward to arriving in Madeira in a few weeks.👍👍👍
Haha definitely because it’s there for the tourists isn’t it. I won’t be having it again that’s for sure
Following the excellent recommendation at Theo’s, we tried Snack Bar Bela-5 and true to form it did not disappoint!
you can never go wrong at Bela, I am glad to hear you enjoyed it and hope they looked after you well.
Hi Joey, Try the almond encrusted Black scabbard fish at the Galleria restaurant in Old Town. Excellent way to prepare that fish. I had it twice while in Madeira last year.
I enjoy your videos.
John s. Vero Beach, Florida
I’ll give it a go - thank you
Interesting video. Thank you. You said the Tuna “was coming into season”. What time of year is Tuna best? When also is the scabbard fish season?
Spring is usually best! Scabbard is caught all year around but spawns in winter if you’re looking for the eggs
The best tuna (with milho frito, of course) I had while I was "stationed" there during my military service in 1988 was in Câmara de Lobos. It came in block form, not filetted, but still it was so juicy and tender. I had had it before in a few places in Funchal but it was always on the dry side. The second best I had was on the north coast but I can't remember the name of the town.
Love that you have those awesome memories!
@@TheJoeyP - Yeah, spending the best part of a year in Madeira is something I'll never forget, even the military service part, which is something most of my "brothers in arms" at that time would rather want to forget.
I’m came from Madeira but I never eat espada com banana until my kids born in Uk went on holiday they tried and loved it 😂😂😂I said to them you have tourists taste 😂😂😂😂 and they eat it all the time when we go back 😂😂😂😂
Disown them 🤣🤣😂
Espada fish with fried bananas is not a traditional Madeiran dish. Restaurants in Funchal started doing it back in the 90's. I'm a local and I don't recall ever seeing them prior to then. Also, if the menu is in english, it is definately not for locals. Madeirans do not cook fried bananas and we do not do passion fruit jus (gravy) at home! LOL
haha exactly! tourist food.
All 4 choices were properly prepared and was good Joey 😋, black scabbard fish and banana looked best for me 👍
Looks can be deceiving! I will never be eating that again haha
@@TheJoeyP I don't blame you , since there are so many other good choices to be had in Portugal.
I'm from Madeira and i've never ate espada with banana, I think its something just to fool the tourists.
Espetada + bolo do caco + milho frito + french fries is my favorite dish
Bolo de mel and broas de mel are top top, we eat a lot during xmas.
Prego em bolo do caco is good.
Queijada is a simple cake but one of my favorites.
Espada with banana... traditional... giant gaslight... it's not even funny
You really should try the espetada de frango at Churrascaria Brasa Viva in Sao Vicente! One of the best chicken you’ll ever eat!!
Ah yes! I’ve eaten there but not filmed. I like it, but I think the one at santo da Serra market is better
How did I not recognise you! 🤦♂️ I have worked there for a year and half, and customers rave about it. My brother in law owns it , and we are family in there. Glad you liked it! If you do pop around again ask for me! Happy good food hunting!
@@marcocastro6868 I was there with my girlfriend at the time, just got a quick meal. I must come back and film there. It was delicious. I’m off island now, but when I’m back.
Hey, great video! Me and my fiancé are looking at going to Madeira for our honeymoon this November, but I’ve heard mixed things about the beaches there… we would like to spend maybe half our time on the beach and the other half hiking and exploring. Does that seem possible in your opinion? I know there aren’t many beaches but we would just need one and it doesn’t need to be that big hahaha. Also how’s the weather in November? Thanks!
Thank you! Madeira is a fantastic choice for a honeymoon, you will love it. Yeah Madeira isn't known for sandy beaches (you'll need to visit Porto Santo for that), the ocean access is nice from the saltwater pools, and I am sure your hotel will have a pool too. Madeira's hiking trails are stunning, and very accessible, if you hire a car, you will have no problem splitting your time. As for the weather in November, it's usually mild and pleasant, maybe better for hiking rather than the sea, but you may get lucky. Just be prepared for changeable weather in the mountains. You two are going to have an amazing time! Enjoy your honeymoon!
Another great place for bolol de mel is Chambo store also in Funchal
Thank you
Ive walked past Vera Cruz many times, next time im in Madeira i might pop in.
Bolo do mel is very nice when warmed in the oven and eat with the Madeira wine
Yes! Warm with wine is also great. Yeah you should try Vera Cruz, it was my first time too. Just skip the banana
Hey Joe
All my family is from Madeira and I will be visiting at the end of June for a couple of weeks. If your interested we could do something you havn't done, like a real traditional Madeirense cooked espetada and home cooked meal with family members. As I'm not from Madeira I am sure you could show me a thing or two.
You up for it?..👍👍👍
Ah I wish! Sadly I’m away until end of July. Thanks so much for the kind offer though
MIlho frito is great, I keep saying I can't believe they dont do this elsewhere (at least that I know of)..... people in the UK would love it, someone should start a company and get it in the supermarkets it would be a sensation. As for the scabbard fish, a couple of locals on seperate occassions have said they'd never eat it due to the fact that (apparantly) it is prone to being contaminated with parasites, and that a lot of Madeirans avoid it for that reason and that it's just brought out for the tourists. Apparantly fishermen from other countries don't even bring it home with them for that reason. I don't know how much of that is true but the results from a simple google search of "scabbard fish and parasites" would be enough to put off the more cautious traveller from consuming it, with or without the banana! Shame cos it is damn tasty. Nice videos anyway mate, I was recommended them by a friend as some of the best ones on Madeira and am glad Ive had a look all the best to you
haha you can start your Milho Frito empire!! I think the parasite in espada is in a lot of fish, even tuna struggles with it, but the espada is cooked all the way through so it should kill it and all be fine. Happy you like the videos, hope you keep enjoying them.
I absolutely agree with you. Eshpada con banana it's something not at all tasty and it doesn't combine. I was eating in Funchal and I didn't like it.
I will never eat it again haha (unless for another video)
With few ingredients we make good dishes so glad you like
That’s very true!
Lol, the 4 worst-rated dishes are also in the top six best-rated on TasteAtlas!🤦♂
who knew ;)
Just an idea: could you do one day PLEASE a SUSHI tour in Funchal..? Obrigada!
Having been to Japan I might struggle with that one, but one day I can try to keep an open mind and do it, when I am back from my trip to Asia.
Why would you want Sushi in Madeira..🤔🤔🤔...I like Sushi but why go to Madeira for sushi..🤔🤔🤔
@@gf301062 Just for a change! When staying for a longer time, I go out quite often and try different restaurants in Funchal. I found the Sushi (quality and freshness) always amazing! So I thought you might know the best places to go, and certainly places I did not discover so far:-)) Anyway, I like your videos - and I'll be back end of November to try some 'new addresses'! And maybe have another Poncha or coffee with you at Santo da Serra:-)) Take care! G
I think they are made with honey, not sugar cane sugar (but maybe both). Mel is honey which you mention in your translation..
usually it is with mel de cana, which is the sugar cane syrup (or sugar cane honey). either way, it is delicious.
OK, when you read the ingredients on the bolo de mel it said sugar cane syrup and not honey so clearly I am confused about this 😜.
@@MrBswede I think it is simply the loose use of the term honey in Madeira when referring to mel de cana.
Fish and banana combo....no!! I've never seen high-end chefs using bananas and fish, for the very reason you've highlighted. The fish should be the star of the dish.
Terrible terrible idea 🤣
I here in Madeira where to get best steak bolo de coco. I’ve had one but tiny in the pub!!!! Help brought my son and was tiny!!! Oh n cheap beer please xx
Ah did you manage to find it?
It's hard to find a cookie that doesn't taste at least ok with coffee or tea..
Haha that’s true!!
I only tried scabbard with banana as I was led to believe it was a traditional dish, so I had to try it & I was supporting locals! 😬
who told you that? the tooth fairy? Just kidding! I mean, I am sure some people love it, but they are better separated for me if I am honest.
@@TheJoeyP Would it be comparable to pineapple on pizza?! 🍍 🍕 🤔 😜
Love Milho frito 😋
Me too
As a local, scabbarfish is my favorite fish, with banana it is terrible, as you said, it is a tourist dish, they also mix it with passion fruit. Sugarcane desserts not everyone likes it, it has many flavors and it is not a light cake or biscuit, but milho frito is one of my favorites in our gastronomy, just cooked I understand is a difficult flavor to like, but fried is delicious.
I can imagine that it’s even worse with passion fruit! I only ever eat it grilled as it is. Never with these weird combinations
@@TheJoeyP it is😅
Maybe you could a list of the dishes you least enjoy. An honest list
I was pretty honest about the Espada and banana! I like most things to be honest
I would eat bananas separately 😮
Can I have Pad Krapow instead?😅 Oops 😬
Haha I wouldn’t advise that in Madeira, might be even worse than the banana and fish!
Being brave again hey Joe😂
as ever Max, as ever!
Try it with Maracuja sauce!
haha that might be even worse hahaha!
Not at all! Depends where you order it! No joke! I'll be back in November, ready to take you out for another try:-))
Another one is the fish with passion fruit
Count me out!!
The food is really good and great value for money
Yes, Madeira is great value
nobody from madeira eats that i don t know who the hell invented that !!!
haha we should find them and ban them from the island
@@TheJoeyP i can give you some restaurants out of the town if you want to try different ones , i know almost all of the good ones
Judging by the look, I could be talked into believing that broas means little breasts in Portuguese. 🙃😂🤣
Now I’ve lost weight I didn’t have any to show to compare
😮wow strange combo
Hahah I don’t recommend it
u should visit Argentina!
That’s right, I should haha
is that jason momoa at 9:43
🤣🤣🤣
I grew up in Madeira. Never heard of espada with banana until about 15-20 years ago. It's not traditional. Just saying.
I've tasted the milho Frito.. I think it's good ❤
sooo good! you need to try it in Madeira
Portugal food is the best in the world.
maybe... haha
Espada most overrated.....oh and steak on a stone too.....
Espada is great when it’s fresh and cooked right! Not like the for sure
Noooo I love them together in bolo lol
Fishy banana
