    Absolute legend is Sam, that voice)( should narrate all Golf Documentaries. The little tear forming at the end, the Capatain's fatherly pride. Team sport is such a wonderful gift...

    I was 14 in 1985 and I don’t think I’d ever watched golf before. My abiding memory is Sam holing the putt on 18 with Peter Alliss’ commentary. As Torrance lined it up he said, “Wouldn’t it be marvellous if he rolled it in.” And then as it tracked towards the hole: “It’s not a million miles away is it?” and it dropped in. I was in tears at the time and it still gives me a lump in my throat no matter how many times I’ve seen it. I’ve been a golf fan (and a frustrated player) ever since.

    I met Sam during this week. My pal and I got his autograph, my pal couldn't get the top off his pen, Sam said (in jest) 'You're hopeless, i hope my team aren't as nervous as you are'. LOL, I ribbed my pal for years, calling him hopeless at every opportunity. What a great week, I saw it all, happy memories, ditto for 2010, all seven days there. Beating the Yanks, so sweet.

    The first comment was Trevino was an amazing Captain. This one story put us one up even before we tee'd off. At the dinner Wednesday night at the N.E.C. Trevino introduced his whole team and told everyone at the dinner how much career money each player had made, which was obviously much more than us Europeans had made. Tony Jacklin then got up and said "thank you Lee for that great introduction of the US Team but actually we are not playing for any money this week and have never done so in any Ryder Cup" We all giggled and then Tony said " but I'd like to introduce Sandy Lyle, Open Champion, Bernard Langer, Masters Champion and Seve Ballesteros, past Open and Masters Champion. Trevino had no come back, he had to stay quiet and Tony put us 1 up.

      @alexandermcguire3695 I hope you had a great round! I could waffle on for ages about the Ryder Cup, why it is so special, how the passion runs so deep for the players and fans and the fact we get to see these golfers in a different light. But your sentence that 'Need a bit of motivation. This is it', encapsulates so much with so few words about what a fantastic sporting event the Ryder Cup is.

    Sam’s 22 foot or 25 foot putt,depends what paper you read , was made with a putter borrowed from my brother-in-law Jimmy Shannon. Sam had his clubs stolen a couple of weeks before the 85 Ryder Cup. He figured that replacing the woods and irons was not a problem as the they could be duplicated and he had some time to get used to them but he was fond of his putter and Wilson had stopped making the in 1962/63,so he could not replace it.Sam was talking to the head pro at Gleneagles and told him of his problem and described the putter,make and model and the pro said I know someone who has the same club,lt was my brother-in-law who was a member at Gleneagles.The pro called Jimmy and asked if Sam could borrow the club to play in the Ryder Cup,Jimmy said you bet and rest is history.

    • @ZACKFAIR1205
      @ZACKFAIR1205 Год назад +2

      @@Stbuster31Yes he did with a hand written letter from Sam thanking Jimmy.
      Jimmy had the putter,the letter,an 8 by 10 photo.of Sam standing on the 18th. with his hands up in Victory along with the print out from the paper,the one describing the 25ft. putt of course,mounted and framed and hung in his front hall for all his visitors to see.

    I still do not understand why you put your best players last on Sunday. You risk losing momentum and there is a chance the points at the end don’t even matter.

    Sam and his dad bob are legends, can remember watching sam back in the day, and bob was a great coach used to watch him and padraig for ages on the range at Wentworth. In my opinion these were the golden days for Europe, and the top european golfers actually played on our tour, now theirs no cohesion the top Europeans play full time pretty much in America, and the team pick is now from what i consider not the best of the best, victor hovland is no. 17 in the ryder cup standings this is a joke, he has to be a pick, because of mcilroy going to the pga so early in his career it has destroyed our tour, and i cant see us competing against the Americans again at that standard, of the 80s and 90s

    The world has changed since Sams RC days. Today both teams play together on the US tour so the rivalry is simulated. As a proud European I no longer care who wins because I already know the winner is the PGA tour.
