    Tanjore Gnyana (1857-1922)
2022 marks the centenary of the famous 19th-century dancer Tanjore Gnyana. Although Gnyana is not known to many today, she was a celebrated courtesan (devadasi) dancer who lived in the latter part of the 19th century. Her fame reached great heights when she performed on the 17th of December, 1875, at a cultural event organised by the people of Madras (Chennai, South India) to commemorate the visit of His Highness Prince Edward of Wales (later King Edward VII), to Madras, during his extended tour of India.
