    I have heard of a social science Professor who calls them survivors and not victims. She condemns the idea of looking at women in similar trades as victims , rather she enforces the idea of them being survivors, because they have survived their lack of control and agency on their own lives to what they are now, empowered. And we need to acknowledge their journey to empowerment rather than just reducing them to mere objects of our sympathy.

      Your professor is very wrong , coz it's not some calamity or crisis , rather than just looking at this as some empowerment ,

    • @ruhiraj2935
      @ruhiraj2935 2 года назад +4

      Tell your teacher , she is wrong ,this is not how a country should deal with women trafficking , as all those women forced into such trades are also a victim and survivor ,

    • @ruhiraj2935
      @ruhiraj2935 2 года назад +2

      Tell your teacher , empowerment is when these women can come out of such hell , just talking about their empowerment coz they some how survive , is like hiding forceful trades of women by glorifying certain aspects that a women achieve by dealing with crime

    • @ruhiraj2935

      They are a victim , who somehow learn to live , shame on such professor , rather as society your professor should feel shame about such practice of forcing women to such trades , and later using such women tragedy and strength as an excuse to hide your own guilt

    • @ruhiraj2935
      @ruhiraj2935 2 года назад

      And by shame I am not shaming these women who are forced to such trades but as a professor your professor must feel shame of not addressing their victim journey

      Well, virginity meant that the woman was free of diseases and kids. It’s a biological choice. Would u risk the woman telling u one day that she left three kids with another man somewhere? Or she’s still in love with him, even partially?? That’d obviously complicate things. Wouldn’t u want a hassle free deal?? It’s not like they had doctors and condoms and stuff. U had rely on instincts and limited resources that r available to u.

      Yes. Things take time to change. Things have gotten much better. And there’s definitely more room for improvement. However, there’ll always b some people that’ll always exploit the past or act dumb. We have to b pragmatic.
      When u r in hell u keep walking; fighting for ur way out. If u don’t, u get to stay in hell. Some may even choose to stay out of fear or failure. And we can’t choose things for them. Or save the ones that they drag into hell along with them. We do the best we can where we r. And consider life fulfilled.

    Absolutley fascinating analysis of some of these early films. Maybe it's time to change who we see as empowered and who we see as exploited? As a scholar said, it's not a binary -- most women are both.

    In another video we've done, Ruth Vanita talks about Pakeezah and how the story goes out of its way -- with elephants and natural disasters, etc -- to make sure that the tawaif's virginity can be protected. Even though some films seemed to celebrate courtesan culture, there was an underlying criticism too.

    Coming from a person who is VERY ignorant about the tawa'if concept and its historical role; I can't help but draw comparisons to the role of a geisha in Edo era Japan (again, mostly ignorant about this too); I wonder if digging deep into that would explain stuff/help us analyze this community in a larger way; help us look at it in a more global context of attitudes towards women designated to perform certain jobs

      Yess agreed! As far as I have known, Geisha were formulated by the head 'Oiran' that can be referred to as a courtesan. Even though they had connections with rich aristocrats, their main function was to be good wives and bear pretty children of the riches. It's such a complex concept

      It’s a sick combination of false pride and insecurity, when neither is warranted.
      There’s a difference between being glad of ur ancestry and being proud. I can’t b proud of the work that someone else did. It’s their victory. However, I can b appreciative of the fact that I come from ancestors that accomplished so much. With it comes a sense of duty and responsibility, to continue the streak and not ruin it for the next generations.
      There’s no other region that’s been attacked incessantly for a Millenia by actual EMPIRES in history, and survived. No other has trades so extensively and successfully with the ENTIRE world. None. Most faced only their neighbors. Some went on killing sprees as soon as they became powerful, or in the spirit of greed and entitlement. They not only lost their people, but lost their entire culture/essence. Some r reviving their roots again now. Celtic Druids for example.
      While india is the only one that’s consistently maintained it’s roots, for the most parts, despite taking heavy damages. Plus, shared itself with others freely. That MUST b acknowledged, they deserve the accolades. Imagine the fight that they had to put up in order to preserve their world for their progeny. How can anyone NOT feel that utter and absolute love, devotion, pride, duty, and bravery throughout the centuries that they demonstrated?? Unless u don’t have the brains or a soul 😒. While all other native pagan religions r pretty much wiped out.
      There’s traces of desi culture all over the world, in stories, in their languages, in their beliefs. Even in the Americas there r stories that r similar to desi stories, like the world turtle story. There r Japanese temples with desi deities and rituals. English has hundreds of desi words incorporated into it. Bhratar became brother, mather became mother, pratar-father, Kolam - column, manus/manushya - man/mankind (arising from Manu in Manusmruti). Russian has a lot of Sanskrit in it, not just words but even grammar. So does Romani and Korean and some others.
      There’s much that desi ancestors have accomplished, which ought to b recognized and appreciated. African ancestry is a lot older, and they never truly developed as much as the people in the Indian subcontinent. They’ve had tropical forests, sea shores, elevations, variety of flora and fauna etc. just like the desi ancestors. So y didn’t they develop relatively exponentially??
      There’s much to b appreciative of, but desi people don’t seem to study the history or the nuances. They follow sound bites and narratives of politicians, celebrities, and a looney uncle that tells them half baked stories with questionable sources 🙄 🙄 😒 . Real history truly is extremely rich and amazing. There’s no need for peacocking. It’s like watching someone lick the dirt in a room full of great treasures and pretending to call it delicious 🙄 😒. It’s a whole lot of wrong on so many levels that u just wanna walk away from it quietly.

    Have you guys given a thought to if maybe you should make more Hinglish content in order to reache the wider masses? The videos, this one and so many others, are very good. But they basically preach to the learned. People with a good enough understanding of the language you guys use in your videos, probably already subscribe to the idea of feminism or try to be anti castist. Why not actually do what you are aiming to do and preach to those who perhaps wanna know but cant coz even the Indian part of the internet is so obsessed with being English language. Why dont i just watch "The Take" then? They have longer analysis of these kinda tropes or film history, why do i come to you? Coz i am Indian, i wanna know about India. I wanna do it in my language-ish. Thats the reason India in pixels is my favorite channel. You can aldo maybe go down the vernacular mix with Hinglish route. Isko constructive criticism k tarha le please.
