The ships of the Imperium of Man. These goliath vessels plough the void of the 41st Millennium.
But why do they do it? How do they do it?
This is an introduction to this subject.
Alas, I still have my third bout of the Ick beginning with C. So please forgive me if this is less focused than normal. I thought it better to put something up rather than nothing. My humble and sincere apologies if this decision was misguided. Развлечения

I got hooked when Balders first promoted Raid, it’s actually a really fun game
Want me to tell YoStar that your impressive endorsement abilities could open whole new markets for their ongoing masterwork, "Azur Lane"?
...then again, they've recently started tempting GW's wrath by naming their new faction "Mechanicus" -- ruclips.net/video/qH8ZCg8zKZw/видео.html -- and that isn't the half of it, they've developed a very Gothic-looking battlefleet for it... at least it floats in water instead of going through outer space...
...so I'm sure you will forgive me if I file this notion at the very back of my 'letters I should write' folder in my head.

Sometimes you have to take the bag. Some people have a very difficult time with Raid Shadow Legends. I personally think that this is a channel of love for the 40k setting.
It is our collective escape. In the real world, we need money to be comfortable to be able to continue to create.
Leveraging a loyal audience to fulfil “the hierarchy of needs”
I don't think anyone will think this is a sell-out. I personally think having security, financial safety, and peace of mind for Mr and Mrs B is a great business discussion. I am happy that you are starting to feel better. I wish you all a happy weekend.
And remember “Take time for a little fun!”
Thank you kind soul :)
For the Empire Admiral always a please Baldermort hope the move goes well.
Me- having kind of a shitty day
Baldermort- "you matter"
Me-😀
Damn straight you do brother Haus.
Never let anyone tell you otherwise.
Ever.
If we used seconds to determine how long a trillion is, it equals out to 31,709 years.
That's a strange way of saying tree fiddy
Does this account for leap years or is it all standard years?
In long scale it is even million times more
One..two...three.......
Wow if this is accurate it really puts the number in perspective!
I've been hoping you would make a video on the navy for a while now. It's a really fascinating part of the 40k verse that many people tend to gloss over. I'm glad you decided to cover it!
I hope you enjoy it. Next ones WILL be better.
@@baldermort@48:00 a full episode and then a play list on each class would be a great idea
I feel ya there it's the same for titans
It's Friday, it's raining outside, and Baldermort just dropped a tasty lore compilation? That settles it. I'm putting the kettle on.
The Imperial Navy is absolutely vital for the continue survival of both Mankind and the Imperium, and it’s their bravery of every captain and his crew that allow humanity to fight all across the Galaxy in blackness of the void. There is no mistake that without the Imperial Navy every planet within the Imperium will fall prey to the foul forces of heretics, traitors, and aliens, but like all the forces within the Imperium they will fight to protect the domain of the Emperor.
In the imperial navy they do alot of naval gazing at their naval base.
I want to imagine there is a Imperial Sea Navy and there life is actually kind of fun.
Depending on the world, there are, the aquatic worlds definitely have them, feudal worlds probably do too
Depending on the politics of the world too, a planet with several rival hives that engage in occasional wars might have sea navies if they apply
Balders I wish you well and a strong recovery! Thank you for another amazing episode. I do wish the Navy got more love but due to its lack on the table top, it doesn’t get the love it deserves
Thanks brother LCB. ;)
One of the things I like most about 40K is the sense of scale. It comes closests in terms of Sci-Fi franchises but its still orders of magnitude off. You could give every citizen of the imperium a habitat the size of Ireland and still have most of our solar system left as free space.
Normally 40k adds a bunch of zeroes and calls it a day
But there is one place where they don't add enough scale, and that's ship crews
There's a bunch of autistic as hell analyses comparing the population density of the ships compared to modern navies
They way understate the crew sizes!
So glad you’re here Baldemort! I play blood angels and love them because of you - you have made this world real and accessible! I love introducing new people to your videos - here’s to another 4!
Ah! A fellow son of the blood.
Thank you brother. ;)
For Sanguinius and the Emperor brother !
@@baldermortI, too, fell in love with my faction because of a Baldermort video
Honestly baldermort got me into the blood angels aswell. I've been fervently been looking for more lore regarding them but I'm new to the setting so I usually just settle for some other content
I love the Imperial Navy! Anytime we need to go someplace and fight, they're always happy to give us a ride.
As you should guardsman. Now, seen any heretics around here?

The best description of the Imperial Navy's size is from Skalgrim (the guy who made the famous BFGA 2 mod), who said
"Unknown, but several billion larger ships probably and possibly absolutely insane numbers of smaller ships. I mean, the Imperium has 1 million inhabited planets. Then it probably have something like 100 million inhabited moons, several billion inhabited stations, asteroid or other void based permanent habitations. Say only 1 million of those can build 1 ship or more each decade - (the larger forge worlds churn out 1 capital ship a week and are building thousands at any given time.) Even with such low numbers the Imperium would pump out 100 000 ships every year. And that's most likely not even close to the real number. Just looking at the dedicated forge worlds and nothing else its probably several tens of thousands of ships - every week.
Writers usually don't even comprehend the massive scale of 40k. Battles are written like they have a handful of ships, and whole system wide battles have a few million soldiers fighting. When everything should be scaled up by a factor of 1000.
Some sources say the Macragge's Honour is the largest of the Glorianas. Data is conflicting .A SSD would probably be around a standard Titan size, but have far less mass. There are alot if size-charts out there that shows the difference in size, and 40K is on the upper scale in most cases. The Imperium probably have at least several hundred thousand, or even millions, of BS ships close in size to a SSD. And a hundred times that in cruisers, and a thousand times that in LC and hundreds of thousands of times that in Escorts, and everything LC class and upwards is larger than SD's in Star Wars/
Then again, the Imperium of Man has around 1 million inhabited planets, 10 of millions of inhabited moons, 100s of millions of inhabited space stations, asteroids and other such habitats. A single hive world could easily produce several BS and cruisers a year. A Industrial world many times that. Scale in 40k is immense. But none of the authors writing lore seems to grasp this. Largest battle descried still has fewer combatants than our world wars. Yeah. Just no. Makes no sense. Imperial invasions and crusades would not be in the millions strong, as described, but in the billions.
The Imperium of Man only has a slight idea of how many worlds and habitations it actually control, with it founding, finding, losing, etc several hundreds or thousands every year. Its so vast, and old, yet haven't even found the majority of the old human owned worlds. Its still growing - rapidly, each sector with the only exception being Sol (which is mostly discovered) is filled with huge blank spots that humanity have yet to send explorer fleets to. If humanity really really wants a region of space the only thing stopping them are massive warpstorms and perhaps a fully awakened Necron dynasty thats fortified its region. Perhaps. Imagine the terror of the Tau, sending out everything they have to stop what the Imperium considers to be a pitiful fighting force barely allowed to be called a crusade - loosing billions of lives in the process and having their military might crippled - only to get word through intelligence gathering that somewhere way of, at a world named Terra, someone called a "High Lord" have just found out you exist - despite your massive fighting and deathtoll in the billions on both sides - and this "High Lord" have looked over the numbers and decided that your race actually warrants a proper response not from a "region within a subsector" but from a whole "subsector". Then you notice that instead of a few hundred of the massive ships that invaded your sector and brought with them hundreds of millions of enemy troops - they are bringing tens of thousands of such ships and several hundred billion troops. And this is still not considered "full scale war" by the Imperium.
To be fair, the writers behind most the lore and stories about the void battles (well all battles really in 40k) are REALLY bad at scale. They speak about whole fleets having a few hundred ships while it should rather be hundreds of thousands to match the scale of the Imperium and setting. The Imperium should be able to build millions of capital ships and billions of other ships - each year. And I'm not even exaggerating that part."
-From the Skalgrim mod Discord
Gather Brothers, the Emperor has blessed us yet again with tales from his faithful servant.
Damn, i was playing BFGA 1 and 2 last month, and was searching for good videos on the lore of the navy, and couldnt find any.
Might have to go back and play some more of them after i listen to this
Happy anniversary my friend. 4 great years behind and many, many more to come. Cheers from the heart of Texas 🤠
Everybody talks about Space Marines here, Guardsmen there, but they only get deployed if the Imperial Navy didn't manage to crush yet another group of foul heretics or xenos in the void.
For all the emphasis on the Astates, it is the Navis Imperialis who keeps the Imperium alive. Without them, the Imperium would be a million small island in the void, separated and ready to be picked off, one by one. Without the Imperial Navy, foul xenos like the Orks or Tyranids would have been able to destroy far more productive world after productive world, denying its resources to the Imperium of Man.
So praise be to the Imperial Navy, the shield of the Imperium of Man.
Testify!!!!
I faked an illness at work so I could feast fully on the magnificent glory that is this channel.
Thank you.
Not only to the voice talent, though his skill far surpasses any other I've ever heard, but gratitude must also be expressed to the hand that writes and the eyes who research.
I know not how many minds comprise the glory that is Baldermort, but I salute you all.
May He continue to smile on your work till the very stars sing your praises.
@Jeff-ur1lj I salute your skill. Although most find it difficult to type while giving hand jobs to the homeless transgender veteran community, your generous heart and years of practice have enabled you to do both at once. Would that this world had more such digital poets, typing away on RUclips while gooey white orbs of gratitude dribble down their face. Alas, yours is a lonely road, troad only by yourself and the fair one legged maiden who birthed you in that alley so many years ago.
Send Peggy my regards, and I assure you both, the child care payments are in the mail.
'lay the smackdown with your homies' said with a English accent is just plain funny
That was the intent. I self deride often. I know how stupid I sound. :)
Normally I skip the advert. But here it was so entertaing I watched it twice. Just hearing Baldemort saying "Lay the smack down with your Homies" was priceless. I may watch it again for the entertainment value.
Hearing a warhammer lore voice say "homies".... im subscribing immediately
"Expanding into what?" is actually a fascinating question. A growing body of scientific evidence strongly suggests that our own universe is essentially a "bubble" inside a much larger expanse -- in fact, the going theory is that we essentially exist inside a black hole, that the big bang (which we now know happened *after* early spatial expansion, interestingly enough!) was likely a burst of proto-matter and energy that our cosmos gobbled up from the encompassing one. Ruminate on that... universes inside of black holes. It would mean our own universe contains lesser universes, and that our cosmic expansion may one distant day open our reality up to the "parent universe".
If true, existence is essentially endless and self-renewing. Comforting thought, that.
Also, it may mean that this is why we can’t see further dimensions, some say. Because we are in a black hole, the other elements/dimensions are not present.
Bumped into this theory from the three body problem and dark forest. Truly gripping ideas. :)
Maybe what we perceive as the expansion of the universe is our universal black hole slowly evaporating and space time returning to its undistorted state perhaps ?

(Don't ever forget the great Kronan, lol)
I am a giant history nerd. Naval history makes up one of the two major/basic aspects of history I am most interested in (the other being the classical world). The naval aspect of 40k plays to my taste in history in a way that not much else does and I absolutely adore it. It never seems to get enough love from 40k fans in general. Though the BFG games seem to have gotten a lot of people to take a closer look at this aspect of the setting.
I'm perfectly fine with the main focus of 40k being land warfare, but it seems sad that so many people just gloss over the fleets. This video does a good job at emphasizing the scale required by the setting. At the least, people should respect this part of the lore even if they don't focus on it. Since it is a necessary part of the setup required for whatever it is that they do truly love.
Oh, follicley challenged one!!!
That had laugh almost as much as I enjoyed hearing the rest of this. Yet I still nodded into slumber as you unfolded the scope of all that is around us.
Horrah for baldermort! Good luck with the move.
Your intro was exactly what I needed to hear, of course right when I need to hear it.
Synchronicity - I’d say it’s a B but it is an angel and only when I dislike it is it karma lol
4:32 - Brother Baldermort trying to BLOW OUR MINDS.
lol, love it :)
Always enjoy your videos Brother.
I think an Imperial capital ship should be one hundred kilometers long, and in addition to the crew, it should be able to carry about ten million other personnel, as well as a large amount of equipment, production lines and raw materials to cope with any mission and challenge.
The hardest thing to comprehend in warhammer 40k is the absolutely titanic scale. From the armies to the size of everything
I feel like GW would be best served by reasoning out the canon usage of every piece of equipment that makes up void warfare, from there determine what void warfare actually looks like, outline it in a writer's bible, and enforce that. It's one of the more noticeable failings in the fiction that void engagements seldom resemble each other.
"...don't use this as a mere sleeping prop"
caught me and...no can do. Lore videos in general and 40k lore videos are legit my most consistent sleep aid and I mean that in the best way possible! I'll pick up a few snippets of lore here and there but for the most part it's all soothing white noise.
Just the beginning ❤
It reminded me a bit of this end of a poem: "In the solitude of a billion lightyears/ all of a sudden, I sneezed".
Hope you got well again fast and thoroughly and are remaining well. The universe needs a Baldermort.
Always a pleasure to see a new video on this dark and grand setting. Get well soon and enjoy your new home.
I thought the Abundance Tertious saga was gone and forgotten. Don't make me hope again in vain, Lore Master.
One thing about the lack of innovation is that some innovation in ship design continued throughout the setting. There are multiple Imperial ship classes which are new designs at least in context of the setting being first created during the 40th or 41st millennium.
Awesome! A whole new area to explore - spaceships! A deepdive/story on the Gloriana ships would be great eventually . . .
Thank you for this glorious treat Balders, always love hearing about rhe Imperial Navy. I definitely have more of an "age of sail" view, as you do, and adore the mental image of these colossal ships pounding away at each other with broadside while boarding parties invade and the smaller ships dart in and out hitting where they can. The navy is a buffet of rich imagination food and you, dear Narrator, are the 5 star chef
Thank you again brother Artra. I hope you have a glorious week. Hopefully more ship action soon. Ya just gotta love the fleet. :)
Hopefully you do as well, and that you can get a full recovery soon! Looking forward to more ship action, as I do all of your videos! Cheers! @@baldermort

I find it somewhat funny that my primary motivation for enjoying your videos was to help me sleep (don't get me wrong, if Luetin was the one to get me into 40k lore, you were right beside him to make me truly fall in love with it), yet now I've realized they utterly fail me in that regard.

@@baldermort It really is, I appreciate you understanding (not that I'm happy you or your close ones have had to experience it) but there are silver linings to most things - it has enabled me to find fantastic content on 40k and SCP lore, history, space and philosophy stuff, horror and other quality fiction stuff - you name it - so it's not all that bad.
Thank you for the suggestion brother! Found it and saved it, had no clue you had content like this. Haven't read (or listened to) The Art of War, so this will be a delight, I'm sure!
It's wild to think about, but eventually the Milky Way will consume the other galaxies that are nearby, Andromeda and Triangulum as well as the smaller satellite galaxies, and together they'll be even more unimaginably vast than they already are.
It’s mind boggling. As you say. I wonder if humanity will be around to view it. ;)

Fantastic video. im glad you mentioned how space warfare in 40K has numerous interpretations and styles people prefer, as the setting is big enough to have many facets to it. Even on the table top BFG can feel like naval battle anywhere from WW2 carrier battles, Sub hunts, Space Jutland WW1, Pre-dreadnoughts, Ironclads or age of sail Line battles depending on which fleets are used or their composition
Yes! I've been waiting for more Imperial Navy videos for a minute now. Thanx B! Looking forward to more!
It's easy to forget how freaking huge these ships are. Even an escort is as larger, or larger, than most battleship-type vessels from other settings. IIRC, a battlestar can range between 1.5km and 2.2km, and those things are huge. These ships are ridiculous. I love it
We have to remember ships vary from the Invincible Reason which is built with DAOT stuff and the Imperium's height of tech and power where 99% of everything is Quantum computing and advanced automation as well as most Astartes ships using mostly automation. To Navy ships that vary widely from semi automated to ones built by a single planet over a generation with just one Magos directing it all. Thus it requires manual loading with crews and work gangs. The massive amount of variety is why its such a cool part of space warfare in 40K.
Nicely imparted brother. Well done. :)
@baldermort thanks I love your lore videos and the Navy is so widely varied just like the Guard for tech and levels of lethality. I look forward to the next Abundance Tersious video as well.

I always like hearing more lore about ships and the navy. Everything on RUclips seems to be mostly the emperor this or the marine chapter that. I never hear much about the actual ships or fleets.
Happy anniversary man, i hope you know you're one of the best!
18:55 my favorite exception to this is the Invincible-class Fast Battleship
The guy who ordered them just did a Jaghatai and went "I want speed", as the Mechanicus argued but eventually made them
They were _perfect_ for the role they were intended for - pirate hunting, but a lot of captains saw these big battleship-looking things and just stupidly went for broadside brawls in ships designed for speed rather than durability
The things became universally shunned as deathtraps and only 5 were ever made, most of which got destroyed due to the above reasons
Also the Mercury-class Battlecruiser is an example of an almost-same ship made for exactly the same role (pirate hunting), but was used by people who actually played by its strengths (Battlefleet Bakka), and so the Mercury-class became a beloved Battlecruiser while the Invincible-class was condemned
I was a freelance game developer for bfg back in the day. I got a number of gw publications.
As said it greatly depends on the author what necessitates a crew complement, speed, range etc.
In the game, the scale was 1cm to 1000km. And a turn was one hour in universe. This gave you a rough combat speed of 20,000km per hour for an imperial cruiser. And a weapons range of 30,000km for common weapons with other standard type weapons getting to 60,000km. And of course the nova cannon reaching up to 150,000km (the blast template was over scaled for game purposes as otherwise it'd be the size of a sizeable moon. Similar for ship explosions; they could be the size of large rocky planets if taken at game value).
For crew we assumed each hit was 1000 crew or more (not including slaves, hidden cults etc). So a cruiser would vary between 6,000 to 10,000 crew, but once again this was not including slave labour etc. Also carriers would have a larger crew (but possibly less slave labour).
For other factions crew complement would vary per hit. Orks is an interesting example as they had extra hits that represented disposable shields which lined up with having extra boys for the size.
It must be remembered that the ships of the line carried an awful lot of supplies. Usually enough to be self sufficient for 6months. In addition to this they would also have redundancies many of which abandoned. Entire sections of capital ships could be sealed off for centuries before being rediscovered during repairs. The various different types of power generators and fuel will take up a collosal percentage of the ships volume, not to mention non combat related infrastructure.
Kind of interesting: The Milky Way is right now absorbing at least 2 other small galaxies.. maybe 4... Some small ones might have gone completely through our galaxy and not interacted with it in any real way.
They figure this out by looking at odd formations and cluster of stars in our own Milky Way and work backwards to find out that these groups of stars got near us and got sucked in. Some areas are spinning at odd angles to our own.
Even in our own system Sol, there are bodies that have been captured by our solar system from other places.
The way that you describe the cosmos, maybe you should try a few astronomy videos. You did a great job.
"In the navy
We can sail seven sectors
In the navy
We get eaten by warp predators"
To the tune of "In the Navy" by the village people 😂😂😂
😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
Ah, I regret time taking me away from this channel. But it always brings me a smile to hear with how much enthusiasm Baldermort makes his oration. Of course he will always deny it, but it is my belief that he has earned his place amongst the Greats. Never change Baldermort, for communities take its form from its creator, and this is truly one of the warmest communities in all of 40K. Thank you for doing this, and for the time it takes.
We are grateful for the Biscuit, Uncle Lord Baldy!
