You might have seen this plane before and might have seen this video before. Thats right, its the 200,000 subscriber special video, and we are going back to the root of where it all began without the deep base. The KR-860.
But the story of this legendary aircraft doesn’t start in Russia or some spy going over 747 blueprints, but rather at the Paris Airshow in 1999.
This was a very special year as aircraft firms were debuting the new latest aircraft designs to tackle the increasing problem of airport congestion.
Airports could only take so many aircraft per day, and issued airlines limited slot pairs - a single landing and takeoff per week. Some airports were even full, like New York’s JFK and london’s heathrow, resulting in auctions for stunning prices - millions of dollars for airlines for a single slot pair in the worlds hottest cities.
So how could this problem be solved?
Bigger aircraft!
Naturally both Boeing and Airbus threw their hats into the ring, with the Boeing 747X and the Airbus A380, both of which you can check out here on the channel.
But its the third contender that is frankly, the coolest.
The sukhoi Kr-860. Sukhoi design buerau is more famous for it’s military fighters and attack aircraft throughout the Cold war and in modern day Russia, but this wasn’t the first time they strayed into the crazy aircraft territory, having worked before on the somewhat famous T-4 bomber project and less famous, but even more impressive T-4MS.
Kr stands for Krilya Rossii, which in engish is “wings of Russia” and the 860 refers to the total amount of passengers this aircraft was built to carry.
Which was more than both the western competitors to boast.
The idea was for the plane to come in 3 variants:
The specs listed at the Paris air show were bonkers and the real aircraft would be 80 meters long, with a wingspan of 88 meters, with the wings folding up to allow access to airport gates much like the Boeing 777X.
Compared to a Boeing 747 and Airbus A380, the aircraft was over 12 meters longer than a 747 and 15 meters longer than an A380. So it was positively huge!
It would have been powered with either GE engines, Pratt and Witnee, or with eight Kuznetsov NK-93 engines and would have a range of around 15,000 km (9,321 mi; 8,099 nmi).
But not content with just building the next generation super jumbo, There were actually three different models of the KR-860 proposed.
The first was your standard passenger version that could carry 860 passengers across two levels in three classes, or over 1000 if the whole aircraft was economy. This 800 figure didn’t really take into account today’s version of business as back then they never imagine lie-flat beds or even entire private suites like onboard the A380. But there still would have been plenty more room onboard for more passengers
The 2nd type of aircraft was your standard freighter version. But unlike other designs thrown about in their era it could carry full containers. As in, the containers you see on boats and the back of trains, without being de loaded. There was even a rumour that traincars would be able to be loaded into it without coming off tracks… wouldn’t that be a sight!
The third type was a liquid petroleum gas variant, and this is the variant that would’ve been the most interesting for Russia itself. What bonkers about this design is that the aircraft would have been able to tap the gas, whilst in flight, to power the engines. Technology also researched and experimented on Tupolev Tu-206. This would mean that the plane could effectively fly for free by sipping away on its cargo, but even more importantly for Russia, that it could connect it’s remote gas fields with the rest of the country or export it because building pipelines in extreme temperatures and terrains can be even more expensive.
But if trains onboard wasn’t nutty enough, we have to talk about its escalators. Yes thats right, escalators, with an S, because there are three.
Let's watch!
These animations keep getting better and better! Good job F&E!
Cheers!

The REAL reason why the Russians always build massive vehicles, is actually so they can bring their pet bears along 🇷🇺🐻🐻❄
Or have space for their super thick jackets
Excellent point.
Good joke, but a joke nonetheless. We’ve got the six engined Antonov An-225 Mriya as the biggest cargo aircraft in existence. It was originally built to be a transport carrier for the Buran Space Shuttle. Today it carries massive loads nothing else with wings could handle, worldwide with considerable pride. It is a shame the Sukhoi KR-860 was never built - our civilisation thrives on technical challenges / rivalry. It would have been…….GLORIOUS.
@@datathunderstorm I haven't seen the AN-225 in action but I have seen the AN-124 and that was impressive enough. Best engine sound ever!
Lucky for them bears don't have lawyers.
Mad respect for pronouncing russian names correctly. You're the best creator on this because as I see it the absolute most of the RUclipsrs are too lazy to even google how to pronounce names right like we still live in dial-up era and you cannot google something in 5 seconds.
the NUMBER 1 complaint on my channel is the way I talk - and specifically, say russian and german names. Go look at my nazi wing video and you see all the people ripping into me. I read every comment so I see that its something I need to improve.
@@FoundAndExplained It's perfect that you take all comments and criticism into the account. And I watched the whole video and I can tell that the only thing you mispronounced was "крылья россии", as well as a surname of Кузнецов. The latter one was in the name of the engines. Besides that - great attention to the name pronounciation.
I'm really trying these days! You should hear how badly my first attempts are!

Looks like a parody of that commercial where an airliner lands really hard and is bouncing all over the place.
Don’t doubt the Russians to make something cheaper, faster and still equally capable. Incredible plane, I wish it was flying
No, i don't doubt any of those metrics. But I seriously doubt the Russians on these metrics which no passenger care about but the operators do:tzszk
1) Fuel burn per seat(historically, russian designs tend to carry far more structural weight per seat than the equivalent western designs)
2) Dispatch reliabilityyh
3) Avionics integration(even with western sourced hardwares)
4) Scale+depth of the global technical/maintenance/parts support network for customers/operators.
5) Popularity among financing
In other words, the same old set of factors that have been limiting the global mkt share of any Russian civil designs for decades.
Cheaper and faster, maybe. Still far more expensive and time consuming than proposed. At which point the plane is not feasible anymore if compared to A380 and B747
What about tu144

@@FoundAndExplained glad I was able to enjoy it!
When I see this passenger monster first thing comes to mind. Wholly air craft!!!!!!! That would be huge of an airplane. If this was ever built I would try and find the dinosaur tag somewhere inside this thing. Roar.....dam. Yes that was a fluffy reference but it fits well. I wonder what would this sound like landing? I enjoyed this video and content.
Found and Explained, you should do a video on the following aircraft:
1.) Eugen Sänger's "Silbervogel" Antipodal Bomber.
2.) Junkers Ju 322 "Mammoth" Glider.
3.) Junkers (Unnamed) Ground Attack Aircraft (you'll see the resemblance to the Fairchild A-10).
Honestly, these are some of the coolest planes ever designed. Too bad airlines don't want to buy monster aircraft or buy into untested ideas.
Well i mean 1 crash 300 dead is bad. This thing kills 1000 people if something goes wrong
C'est trop long pour l'embarquement aucune compagnie ne veut d'un avion qui met 2 h a remplir et 2 h à vider
Given that the A380 hasn't proven overly successful, I see no reason why this would be.
Even if they did build this thing, it likely wouldn’t have been able to be sold to Airlines in the West as regulation dictates that all passengers have to be able to evacuate the Aircraft in I believe it’s 90 seconds (correct me if I’m wrong) and I remember the AirBus A380 barely reaching that target at less than half the number of passengers.
Also, with this thing being released in the 90s, Boeing had already been flying the 747 for around 25 years, AirBus was releasing the A380 and if Russia would have built and tried to sell this thing, it would have been going after a market that either was already saturated or, with that high of a passenger capacity, didn’t even exist. Plus, airlines by the late 90s to the early 2000s, were already switching away from the Hub and Spoke model that large planes like these serve well (which is why the A380 was ultimately a financial failure that failed to meet profitability), to the direct to destination flight model that favors large, single decker wide body planes like the B787, B777, A350 & A330. And obviously the B737s and A320s used for domestic flights that seat 130 to 200 passengers aren’t going to be replaced by an aircraft that can seat nearly a 1000. Maybe the Freighter version would have been successful though.
I've been watching your videos for so long, I don't even remember WHEN I first found you. It's been an amazing journey so far, and I find myself excited every time I see this channel pop up on my feed. Your videos are entertaining, informational, and inspiring to a staggering degree. In a high density, all Y(Economy) seats config, EASA actually tested+certified the A380 for emergency evac @ 853seats maximum which is also stated on Airbus' official specs....even though no A380 operator has ever adopted such cabin config.
That's only 14.7% or 147seats(about the same maximum seats certified for the smallest Airbus model A220 today) fewer than the claimed 1,000seats for this Russian superjumbo.
Emirates and Malaysia Airlines have A380’s fitted with more than 600 seats each, intended to serve the Hajj.
And don't let us forget that the Base of the 380 was build for a Stretch too. With this Extension and bigger Engines the Plane could carry also 1000 People... Greetings from Hamburg ;-)
@@andreaspump74 Spot on. The A380-900 was the aircraft Airbus really intended to build, and it would have been certified upwards of 1000 seats.

He called this “Soviet engineering” but I believe it was conceived after the Soviet Union dissolved.
Correct. That is a goof and doesn't show respect to the Modern day Russian engineers from after the fall of the USSR.
For reference, the Soviet Union dissolved on 12/26/91. :) So, if this plane was conceived in the 2000s, then it would not be Soviet, it would be Russian.
But nonetheless, airplanes from that part of the world, Soviet or not, were designed to fall apart. Lol...
Edit: It's just a joke guys, don't take this too seriously
@@FoundAndExplained I mean, you’re technically correct. Russian engineering heavily relies on its Soviet legacy. Still does that today without showing any significant advancement even though 3 decades have passed since the dissolution.
@@glebvlasenko1141 yeah, the Soviet Union was one of the worst regimes in human history, but it sure was good at hosting engineering marvels!

I love the Airbus A380 , flew on it Twice, so comfortable and quiet and refreshing spacious.. i feel refreshed stepping off , the air quality in cabin is good.
Another great video! Enplaning and deplaning passengers in inclement weather would not be a good sales point... Additionally, the failure of the A380 and Boeing's choice to go with the popular 787 demonstrated that the intended super jumbo market didn't exist.
And boeing won the jumbo war.
Ahh russian planes , always some wacky design thats super big

In some political alternate history where Russia remains in good terms with the west and somehow this plane is built, then their is a very real chance that Moscow and not Dubai/Doha becomes the main hub for East to west travel between North America/Europe and Asia.
It would be perfect. Its far north location and central position make it perfect for Asia, Europe and Africa (Much like finland today).
One of the reasons for the premature cancellation of the A380 was that it had no cargo version, limiting its customer base. If this aircraft had all 3 versions produced, it would have stood a better chance of succeeding. It was shortsighted of the Russian government to refuse funding, as the project's success would have meant both more tax revenue and greater international prestige.
The West, in any case, would support its own project. This plane would have no future.
‘Variants’ which actually existed.
How refreshing.

I was working at Rolls-Royce at the time and the company considered the chance of this design happening as remote and since they wanted higher thrust and the LNG capability the engineering costs plus the extra work passing certification made it just not worth the effort.
