Just for added clarification - when talking about tooling leather, the animals are not killed for their hides. The "leather" is a byproduct of the beef industry and it is always best that no part of any animal is wasted. I do understand that some folks these days do not condone the killing of any animals for any reason. But, the reality is that in all of human history "humans" have killed various animals for food. At no point in known past human history were humans strictly vegetarian. I do believe that MUCH can be done to better improve the humane treatment of animals that humans do cull for food. I think that we are making inroads in that area. I have done leathercraft for years and I am careful never to waste leather. It is a valuable and precious resource that once belonged to a living creature. It's good to always keep that in mind. That having been said, I love this channel and the tooling work is magnificent. Stay Safe...all who read this.
I would recommend using olive oil, it doesn't create a protective/ water proof layer like boot oil does. I feel like it kick starts the patina. I've used it on several belts and wallets that I've made and they patina pretty quick
Thank you so much.I've learned so much from this video.I have one big piece of veg tanned leather (0,8m2) and I didn't know what to do with this..it is dry and white....I am new in a leather world. After watching your video I cut one small piece of leather, then use olive oil (this is only natural oil that I have right now )...and ...wooow...a miracle ! My leather become beautiful !! I feel like a Colombo when discover America.Thank you so much for excellent videos.
Yeah, I agree... was right at the start of my RUclips ramblings maybe I should do another one and shorten it up a bit. And it is an excuse to get another veg tanned something.
Oxidation does wonders. sounds crazy but a few seconds of plain laundry bleach makes a beautiful tan color..the longer the deeper the color..but 30 seconds maximum exposure in bleach before it will start going back to a lighter color.. 10-15 seconds makes for a rich natural color..I'd add a conditioner afterwards to rehydrate the leather.. the Peroxide trick I've been told does similar things by oxidation..but haven't personally tried it as the bleach works so well..Best wishes my friend..
Hmm, not that sure. With Docs I am always a little hesitant cause Ive heard that they use all sorts of nasty chemicals in the leather and the quality is not what it once was. I would be hesitant with the stuff they put in the leather care. I's look for something 100% natural for virgin leather
@@CeeAreDee What about pure neatsfoot oil? Have you ever used it? Any comparison with the boot oil? I think it's interesting that it has pine pitch in it. I would imagine that it helps waterproof it but not sure what other effect it has, like coloring it or helping with the patina compared to neatsfoot oil....
Hmm, Redghost might be right... I have never had much experience with that however, always used leather conditioner. Let us know how you get on if you do.
I would think so, but I am not 100% sure about the result as I have never tied it out. But I do love the Red WIng products and I know they are of the best quality. I would suggest, try it out on a part that is not totally visible and see what the result are.
Well, as much as possible. But a day in some good strong sun, you will see the difference. To get the wallet like that, it was literally years of use. I put it out in the sun as much as possible in the first few months then just use uses use.
@@bodeine454 I did the same. But I then hit top Stock list and clicked on Smith Have.com. They have two wallets from Wrench and Needle. I just don't know if its the chromexcel or raw veg tanned?

Do not use olive oil, it can make your leather moldy and possibly ruin it. There are lots of oils that are for leather products. Use them.
Yeah, I have heard something similar. It's not the best for leather.
What are your thoughts on Saphir Dubbin for this? I have some and Im about to use it on a Tanner Goods belt
I’ve never tried it I’m afraid.
Not bad. But the clip could have been reduced to 2 minutes.
Yeah, I agree... was right at the start of my RUclips ramblings maybe I should do another one and shorten it up a bit. And it is an excuse to get another veg tanned something.
Really hoped for more from this video than a "primer" for patina.
Open for suggestions. What would you like to have seen more of?

I have a Brave Star virgin leather belt winging its way to me now. Would Dr Martins wonder balsam be ok..?

@@CeeAreDee thanks, I’ll do that....
Did you change the name of this video?
Love the British joke. Hadn't heard that before.
;)
What are the alternatives of boot oil. Is there any other way to get the same effect?
Hmm, I like to use beeswax if I don't have the boot oil available. It gives a more honey tone to the patina, a little lighter but still beautiful.

Try coconut oil
Great video Matt! Now, where's that link in the description that you mentioned in the video?
Love the Monthy Python style intro
haha, that's such an old video I am embarrassed to watch it.
I wonder now...can I use baby oil for my veg tan leather?
Yeah, never heard of that being used. I wouldnt if I were you. I think Piper is right.
how long did you do sunlight before wearing?
A few days and then after that, I put it out in the sun as much as possible. I still do from time to time.
Can i use a coconut oil?
Yes it will darken it considerably but makes the leather look awesome. Look up some vids on it.
Hmm, Redghost might be right... I have never had much experience with that however, always used leather conditioner. Let us know how you get on if you do.
What if i oiled my belt and wore it already? Should i just throw it in the sun now?
Wont do it any harm. Go for it.
Could normal mink oil work??
I think that might saturate the leather a little bit. I am not too sure.
Would using Redwing’s mink oil work just as well?

Rope Dye. Denim, Leather & Crafted Goods for Men thanks for the tip. Love the videos man, keep up the great work!

Just ordered a brave star raw belt. 😊
What kind of wallet is that?
It's from Wrench and Needle. I love that wallet. it must be 4 years old now and is still as solid as the day I got it.
