Regarding the past-game illusion boss refights, one of the things I heard people discuss was how removed from the reality of the real persons they were. Daytona and Jota's condemnation of putting Joule/Cyan in danger and Tenjian and Zonda's heckling of GV's "picking up new women" and then abandoning them feels less like things that the bosses themselves would say or know, and more like aspects of GV's guilt beating up on himself. Since they are visions of past traumas made manifest, it would make sense that they are meant to be as much of a psychological attack as they could be.
Except Merak and Teseo, because they are exactly who they would be 100%. Being in the same room with them is trauma enough, targeted regret sprinklings not needed.

14:27 - I actually really like how the Gravekeepers intertwine with each other in a way that feels fitting for the story's big theme of partnerships. Ace and Hail, the only ones lacking a connection to someone else, show the two sides to complete isolation - Ace is so focused on his job that he's shut himself off from everything else, and Hail is so lazy that she would rather sleep than try to make meaningful connections.
The other four who do have connections to each other hold those connections out of friendship, yet its a twisted one that leads them down destructive paths. It may be coincidental but it almost foreshadows the big twist of the plot, that the partnership-gone-wrong between Copen and Lola led to the total end of this world.
In my opinion this is the strength of iX2s story - what it lacks in dialogue and cutscenes, it makes up with in theming and subtle imagery that rewards you for having stuck with the entire series.

1:07:35 Fun fact about Gunvolt 3's updated ending, that was actually foreshadowed by Moebius's image pulse quotes and super attack text. Turns out, the keyboard mashing used for the text is actually a cipher. Take each row on a QWERTY keyboard and shift up a row (wrap around if it's on the top row, so Z is actually A, < is actually K and $ is actually V) and you can convert the gibberish to English. It reveals than Moebius doesn't want to be disturbed from its slumber, wants to use its power to bring about a good future, and sees a berserk Gunvolt as an existential threat that it must destroy.
Its 1 star image pulse has the quote "Let me sleep".
Its 3 star image pulse has the quote "Find a bright future".
And, most telling, is the text on its special attack: "Azure power overflowing threatens the future. I must defeat it."
That said, actually having it made clear in the good ending absolutely improves things, especially since most people won't be pulling out ciphers to figure out the inner machinations of what is recognized in-universe to be a baby with no moral development, and especially so when the best one is only shown for a second or two in the middle of battle.

A couple of notes: The Gravekeepers not having an apparent function beyond combat is deliberate. Beside Autochrome (who has the secondary function of ensuring that the Laboratory Block's experiments don't jeopardise the Pillar's structural integrity), all of them were built with the sole purpose of keeping out intruders.
Ypsilon was produced by Mother as a way to fill the gap the Creator left when he set off to try and find ways to restore the world. Since it didn't work, she discarded him, leading to his derelict condition at the start of the game.

  • @thefriendlydragon4811
    @thefriendlydragon4811 Год назад +49

    Pretty good vid overall.
One point that was touched on, but was (understandably) not elaborated much on was Xiao's strange absence. I haven't seen much mention of it in the comments myself, so I figure I might as well talk about it here. It's something where the more miscellaneous things you learn, the more baffling his exclusion from the plot is.
As you said before, he's the Genbu of the Four (Five) Beasts. But it's also worth noting that the Genbu is symbolically the opposite of the Suzaku (Zed), like how the Seiryu (Azure Dragon) and Byakko (White Tiger). The game where Suzaku is finally introduced is where his opposite just mysteriously vanishes along with the cliffhanger plot point tied to him. Now, since Zed is gonna be the protagonist in the upcoming epilogue, *maybe* he'll show up there, but I'm not betting too much on that happening.
Another aspect is that one of Xiao's design notes for his final design was "Time". Ghauri actually was conceived with a time Septima early on, but this was shifted to be crystal-based for "certain reasons". Combined with Xiao weirdly having three different watches, his Septima would likely have been time-based in some form. Funny enough, iX2 set up those expectations further. In the base conversation regarding Cryo Freeze, the cast comments on the possibility of a time Adept existing somewhere. Because of this (along with the turtles aging thing you mentioned), it wasn't unreasonable to assume that he might have somehow survived the time skip. Combined with the iX games recently only having returning characters late in the games, it was also not unreasonable to assume that Xiao would follow suit as the endgame twist.
All of this makes the timeline manipulating dragon baby feel even more out-of-place. That being said, I'll continue huffing the copium for Xiao to show up in the epilogue or a Zed spinoff game.

Another excellent retrospective. Thank you again from this hardcore Gunvolt fan for bringing the series' full story, development history, and score-focused as well as non-score-focused gameplay into the public eye.
This time, I just want to point out a few things about iX2's story that I haven't seen previous comments mention (not that iX2's story is very extensive or well-written, but I want to give it its due attention nevertheless):
    - In the intro cutscene, Copen theorizes that the Blaster Rifle is from another world, but he doesn't voice any theories about it being deliberately sent to him until the Hard Mode ending.
    - In the Normal Mode ending dialogue, the iX1 gang figure that the portal back to their world was created by Null, who is fused with the Grave Pillar's teleporter (so the portal *didn't* just appear inexplicably). Their belief is supported by the normal ending's post-credits scene, which implies that Null's personality and will remains in the teleporter, and the Hard Mode story, which confirms that the teleporter can open portals between worlds. The program used by the Creator to revive Null also transferred the teleporter's program from her to Copen's Razor Wheel, which is why the Razor Wheel can open a portal to the iX1 world in the Hard Mode ending.
    - This one is less clear, but I don't think Null was the cause of the area turning "nice and pretty" in the Hard Mode ending. She's unlikely to have that sort of power over the Hanging Gardens' environment, especially since she's no longer part of the Grave Pillar. I think she enters that "prayer" stance just because she's praying for the dying Mother. (She does say "Thank you for everything. I hope you can rest peacefully now" immediately before.) Perhaps the dark and distorted environment in the area closest to Mother was a reflection of her suffering, and she reverted it to normal as she was dying because she had finally found peace.
Also, I'm surprised you didn't mention how unlocking iX2's Hard Mode requires not only finding the secret door in the final stage, but collecting every Bonus Emblem in the game (or else the door won't open). At least the game hints in the manual and in a base conversation that there's a prize for collecting every Emblem... but it says nothing about the secret door. I recall being quite confused in my blind initial playthrough when getting the last Emblem appeared to have no effect on anything.

What kills me the most about Gunvolt 3 as a story, more than Xiao and the lack of followup from 2, more than the timeskip, more than the dramatic shift in tone and themes, is Moebius.
Why does this thing exist? What does it bring to the story? It's a big bad dragon that Sumeragi had locked up with in their basement. They sealed it with a thousand glaives, it produces radiation that drives people crazy, it's the next step on lifewave evolution, and it's (supposedly) going to destroy the world if left unchecked.
That's Gunvolt. That's literally just Gunvolt. You already have one of these in the story, and it's the title character of the whole series. So just ditch the 11th-hour alien baby and have GV himself fill that role!
Imagine a GV3 where Moebius doesn't exist, and ATEMS instead invades Japan to kill Gunvolt before he can lose control and end mankind. Consider what this would mean for our three main characters.
Gunvolt has gradually gotten stronger and stronger throughout the series, to the point where he himself is the central element of the plot and an active threat to the world. And he knows it; it's tearing him up inside. He's handled people like what he's become many times before; he knows exactly what must be done...
And then, after playing with that guilt for the first four stages, here comes Zed, out to kill him in order to protect the world and the people he cares about. Not out of malice or anything, he sees that GV isn't a bad guy, but if he's this dangerous then he's got to die regardless. It's the exact same line of thinking GV himself used to follow.
And standing between the two is Kirin, not okay with ANY of this. She finds GV, recognizes how incredibly dangerous he is just as he and Zed do, but chooses NOT to kill him and instead find a better way. He's a good person and her friend and as much a victim as anyone else, and she's not sticking a sword through his gut just because it's the most obvious solution to the problem. The torch is being passed to her, this is her game, so she'll figure something out. In a game about GV lamenting his past decisions and mistakes, he and the world will be saved by someone intent on not repeating them.
Doesn't that sound like a better basis for a story than what we got?

That's literally the opening of GV1 with Kirin as GV, GV as Joule, and Zed as Quill, which honestly makes for a good bookend if not thematic mirroring. You could do a lot with this, with GV now seeing the naïve optimism he had at the start of the series in Kirin only further feeding his paranoia that she'll go down the same path he did, and Kirin trying to disprove that nihilistic outlook and remind him of why he fought for other in the first place. Like can you imagine GV's reaction once he realizes the irony of this situation and how the roles have reversed? It's a good set up for a redemption story.

Kirin says she went to the iX2 world via Moebius, which I theorized Kirin accessed in a similar manner to how the Nova (Shiden) boss is accessed as of GV 1.3.0. Jason Frudnick says Copen has "Roddy's Blaster Rifle", which has some lore implications with the Blaster Master Zero universe I won't spoil (I am looking forward to a video on those games).

Out of everyone on the team, he's the most chill toward their eccentric qualities, and sometimes goes through with their hobbies like when he reluctantly agreed to being Cayman's extra weight for push ups or how he humored Shiron's idea of him fighting demons in a castle. The Dragon Saviors all respect Gunvolt one way or another, and he's always watching over Kirin, who even teases him for being old or worrying about her like a dad during Apollo's stage. Some of the interactions between the Dragon Saviors even feels like something between siblings.

I appreciate your thoughts on GV3's story. I have had a huge issue I had with the thematic change to Gunvolt's character and frankly Kirin as well. A HUGE driving point of the last games is his characterization as someone with conviction. The second his decision to not kill Joule is questioned, he leaves Quill. As soon as Sumeragi takes her, he has it out for them. As soon as Asimov reiterates Sumeragi type rhetoric, he refuses him. This is then given more nuance in GV2, where Gunvolt remains steadfast in maintaining peace. He actively gets involved to protect innocent people and minimize damage, and the story ends with him finding some contentment and peace only after the a remnant of his fighting past finally leaves.
Gunvolt 3 seems to have completely misread that. Instead, he's some guilt ridden and ashamed character. He turns to Sumeragi, his ENEMY in fear of his own power. Then, the whole game, Kirin is simultaneously apologizing for him while also saying he didn't really do anything wrong.
Worse than that for me is the way Gunvolt's "neutrality" has been completely changed. Originally, the going themes of the games seemed to be "peace is something you must make, and you must earn through fighting and protecting what you love", and Kirin seems to be going for the, frankly, naive "why can't we all just get along!" with all the speeches about just talking it out and Sumeragi "actually not being that bad anymore!". It really really rubs me the wrong way.
I just imagine a way that wouldn't so drastically change Gunvolt's character.
Maybe, Gunvolt slowly goes berserk, losing his mind as his power gets increasingly uncontrollable, until he is eventually captured by Sumeragi due to a loss of his senses. Instead of being apologetic and ashamed, he could be jaded, weary of battle, and more like mentor to Kirin than a sidekick. Instead, he reluctantly joins AGAINST Sumeragi as a competing organization for their exploitation of the Glaives and only to prevent the further misuse of primal dragons. Then, Kirin's stuff about talking it out with enemies bent on ruling the world comes off as inexperience, her handwaving about Sumeragi as bias, and Gunvolt, who's been fighting a war for years, can call her views into question.
The climax then is Gunvolt, who is weary and jaded, giving up because his pessimism has made him unable to envision an end to the fight. Kirin's youth and optimism then is the saving grace, because she can see a way to truly save GV. The torch is effectively passed, with a new spin on GVs original fight for peace.

it would have been cool if ix-2's plot and bosses were based more around them being obsessed with preserving different aspects of humanity, rather than it just being about defending the tower. i can imagine a game where the workers are each obsessed with taking over as much land as possible in a vain attempt to preserve their purpose, in vain attempt to propagate their own programmatically limited version of what humanity was, expanding their territory and the remaining land kinda like how the "the city" in "blame" is a continually expanding mass of halls, towers and towns that has effectively become planet sized, and your goal as the player would be to undermine the workers and get to the tower, the last stretch of unclaimed land. it would have been interesting to see how an obsession could be taken to the extreme, like a worker who is obsessed with cooking and so their stage is literally everything from the kitchen to the farm, dining halls and libraries of recipes, all there to facilitate that obsession. or a worker based on architecture, or one based on demolition that has no specific territory to call their own but instead has made it their purpose to keep the conflict going so they have more things to destroy. just making the workers defenders of a tower was just a missed opportunity.
that being said, you cant really ask much from a team that had very little time, especially considering the game itself is still good.

Literally the simplest way to fix the game for IX 2 for me is making it so the dash functions like the IX 1 dash but with one bullet. You can only dash once in the air, but if you dash into an enemy, wall or floor you get it back. That way you can still get kudos easily.
Also I beat hard mode the default way. Screw the stupid robot space ninja, and mother. They were painful. If it weren't for the lives I would actually really like hard mode. As the lives mainly just forced me to spend like 15 minutes grinding for them.

If you had a few seconds to hit another enemy for a further boost in score it could be more fun.
Maybe it could turn it on its head and insensitive you to stay grounded or something. Make break form more engaging, so that it feels equal to air play and not inferior.

When I saw the announcement of iX2, when we were supposed to see ASG3 news, but got this instead and releasing EARLIER than ASG3 - I named iX2 an experiment. Inti Creates have made a game with experimental ideas they weren't sure about to see what sticks and what doesn't.
As for ASG3 - I don't like the excuse for the time skip, because ASG3 itself invalidates it. Long story short: GV could've received help from QUILL with his initial Primal Dragon situation, and NOT go to Sumeragi. But didn't.

So there's a theory about The Creator and how he got the Blaster Rifle which is unironically more interesting than any other story beat in iX2. But you need to play the Blaster Master Zero games to understand what I am about to lay out.
The Creator is Roddy, the deceased pilot of Andrea. The MA Eve pilots in the finale of BMZ2.
-Roddy is the only other person to carry a key rifle like Jason
    -Roddy is dead
-Roddy's physical appearance has been intentionally hidden and he's the only one of the named MA pilots to be given this treatment
-Jason in the iX2 DLC confirms that he knows who Copen is and admits to having copied his tech. (This was actually confirmed by the devs, Jason's upgraded equipment in BMZ3 copied Copen's design notes and this even reflected in gameplay as Jason has dashes and the ability to hover)
-Jason also confirms that the Blaster Rifle iX Copen has in fact Roddy's
So basically Creator Cope started dimension-hopping in order to find a way to save humanity leaving Lola to supervise his home world (and go skynet). Somehow came into possession of a Metal Attacker, which also came with a Blaster Rifle and Robo-wife. And then died to a fucking space jellybean and had all his homework copied by some other nerd.

Though granted with iX 2 I will say despite the complaints of mechanics with iX 2 I still think there's some decent tech within it such as rapid fire (tho get in on a rapid fire macro) and lock on cancelling... And PERSONALLY I weirdly respect the hard mode run even if the life stipulation makes it too much, tho I personally do like seeking out the skill solution in some games I play so I may just have odd taste.
That conclusion is indeed something I can get onboard with. I can see the caviat though that having a franchise following 3 different protagonists with entires purely dedicated to them might be something people will complain about. Maybe so long as they keep to production times of 2 or maybe even slighty more years we might see what was with GV1, GV2, iX1 again one day but alas I'm only spitballing, Tsuda and Miyazawa have their own way of tackling things but I'd be repeating what you said in summary.

We've already seen multiple universes/timelines and god-like beings with reality warping powers that can traverse them. A plot-line revolving around one of these beings going primal could instigate a Gunvolt Heroes crossover event. Multiple iterations of characters from previous games exist at the same time, in the same place and form multiple teams with their own unique story routes. Provide a hot-swapping mechanic for each team to rotate between 2-4 characters in the field, and you can establish some pretty unique replayability. Completing all scenarios would see you linking up your teams' key players, like Gunvolt, iX, and Kirin into a single squad, giving you access to a long, mid, and close ranged specialist for situations presented in the new final stage requiring use of each of them to survive.
Finale would see all realities collapse, but through the powers of hope, newfound friendship, and whatever J-Pop Idol bullshit the Devs are pining for, the reality the cast now inhabits now would be spared, and an amalgamation of their memories and wishes would influence the shaping of this new singular reality, bringing back their comrades and enemies lost along the way in some form. Be it reincarnation into new bodies or complete revivification (which we've seen a lot of actually), the main and supporting characters would be present together in a new world. Setting up nicely for a sequel where previous antagonists and protagonists have their ideals and desires challenged by their past mistakes and potential futures. As a bit of a downer ending, as is custom, you can have the main trio be sealed away as a countermeasure from the reality-destruction event as their only option to save the world.
Post game could see a Squad Customization mechanic, where you're now allowed to mix and match your squad members and play through levels for your time and score attack modes.
DLC options for additional teams and scenarios that didn't make it into the base game. Maybe some guest characters.
In the end, you've consolidated your timelines, regained your roster of characters, and prepped for a big finale to finish out your story.

While the plot [of GV3] doesn't seem quite AS jank as some people claim, it definitely feels like there are some holes that haven't been properly filled in [even with the updated True Ending]. Not to mention, possible links to Inti Creates' other works, some semi-explicit (Jason DLC fight in iX2), others not (Primal Dragons -> Dragon: Marked For Death?). I think Inti went and opened a door that leads right to a corner with iX and its alternate universe shenanigans, but we'll just have to see if Grim Guardians[--a Gal*Gun spin-off--]provides any more information in that regard when that time comes.
EDIT: Apparently, I forgot to mention that BMZ3 makes mention of "Lightning Beings" or somesuch. So, that may be a thing.

Interesting analyses here. I saw this specific video pop up in my recommended videos but went back to watch the previous GV vid to get proper context on what I was getting into and despite never really playing these games, I came away enjoying both vids thoroughly, so great job!
Personally, as someone who likes Inti's works (had a lot of fun with their Bloodstained games and with Dragon Marked for Death), GV as a series is something I just couldn't get into until GV2 came out and I saw Copen was playable and he specifically piqued my interest. I don't know why, but Gunvolt's gameplay just didn't look fun to me while Copen felt far more straightforward. I did get GV2 on sale once, but once I realized that I HAD to play as Gunvolt too, I just kind of put it to the side. These videos have at least convinced me to give that game another go, though to be honest, I'm now far more interested in Luminous Avenger 2 and GV3 overall; Copen and Kirin just kind of appeal to me more than Gunvolt himself does, what can I say.
To be honest, other aspects also kept me away from this series, like the whole "idol" thing the series loves. I can sort of get the appeal of idols but generally, idol songs just don't do anything for me, so the prospect of one just singing constantly during gameplay wasn't something that interested me. I'm also not the biggest fan of some of the character designs (the bosses all look great though), but I'll leave it at that. That said, I can now get a better appreciation of why people love these games after having watched three and a half hours' worth of analysis on them, so again, good job on these.

I only have one real complaint when it comes to Kirin's Gameplay (aside from most Skill Image Pulses, particularly the Offensive ones, just really not being that necessary), and that's...the Fetters Gauge. As a concept, it really isn't the worst thing ever, but what makes the Arc Unleash version of GV different than getting to play as him under Special or D-nizer conditions, is how he just isn't much of a partner to Kirin as he should be.
Back in the trailers, it seemed that switching to GV would keep Kirin's x20, x30 and x40 Chain depending on when you utilized Arc Unleash. Therefore, you'd switch to GV with the purpose of getting a huge Kudos boost for the limited amount of time the Fetters could keep him around.
My guess is the Chain would be locked upon transformation, so if Kirin was only at x20 when unleashing GV, that's the multiplyer he'd have until he was forced to animorph back, and you'd have to try another time to pull off a sweet x40 run. This mechanic would actually incintevize the Player to find the most opportune moment within the Stages to prepare your Fetters Gauge for extended use. As I see it now, though...there's no real reason to ever switch to GV with the duo's Arc Unleash unless you want some practice for D-nizer Mode/Trial Mode by using the Secret Missions + Moebius's Rare Skill IP to go up against the Bosses. GV doesn't earn the same amout of Kudos that Kirin does, making that mechanic withing her gameplay set not really worth using. Hell, the Crashbolts that are sent out upon transformation don't even cause Kudos Bonuses, so there's not even a point to transforming in a crowd of enemies either.
I guess following the trend of reusing some of Gunvolt 2's scrapped ideas, they went ahead and made the real playable GV be Post-Game material, with the use of Special GV and D-nizer GV. However, it seems to me they forgot to adjust GV's Gameplay once they got rid of the Chain retention, because his reduced Kudos (without the use of his DLC IP) just pushes players away from using him further, and choices such as Infinite Air Hops just end up making less sense, since he has NO downsides to touching the ground.
I don't mind the Fetters Gauge doubling as his HP and EP much, but when it comes to how he plays, I feel too much ended up being changed, as opposed to building on the GV we had in 2.
Some minor fixes I could think of at the top of my head include things such as:
    - Voltaic Arts/Lightning Assaults only teleport GV to either side of an enemy, and don't do much more damage than a standard Dart.
    - The Spark Dash is GV's default action for all smaller enemies, leaving a Tag on them as GV passes through in order to Tag enemies on the other side. Voltaic Busters only work on heavy enemies and Bosses the same as in the final game.
These two changes alone keep the focus on GV's gameplay loop of the Lock-On Flashfield (instead of making him feel like Arc Chain 2), while adding to what we were already familiar with.
Of course, there's much more that I'd change to him, like giving him his own set of Accessories like in D-nizer Mode to fully customize his experience, such as for example: his rather redundant SP Skills? It's weird that Inti decided to give GV and Kirin's SPs a whole screen within the Menu when you have such little say in what you end up using.
Regardless of all that, I can at least say that I enjoy Gunvolt 3's Gameplay a LOT when looking past the gripes mentioned above that live in my mind rent free. I can go on in circles about the story, but I'm staying the optimist in seeing where Epilogue ATEMS takes us, and don't give in to the thought Xiao Wu has been abandoned for even a second. It'd be weird for Inti to bring in 4 of the 5 Sacred Beasts motif they went for regarding protagonists, and leave out one of the main 4 as opposed to the Qilin, which is a bit of an outlier. My 70+ hours on Gunvolt 3 speaks for itself, but I'll be damned if I can't express some of my frustrations with it for even a little bit.
These past two videos of yours on the Franchise have been wonderful, by the way, and I'm glad I got into your channel right before these were uploaded through you Mega Man ZX videos. Also, I do agree, ZX:A is better than ZX :P

I hear you on iX 2. It's a really solid action platformer and I actually do enjoy the feeling of power you get when you finally hit Overdrive and gain unrestrained movement in comparison to previous titles, where building Kudos were more of a motivational thing more than anything that massively affected gameplay. It's just that restraining Copen with grounded combat that has no real score-related gimmick in a franchise that defines itself on gimmicks that alter how you perceive the game just to make Overdrive feel more rewarding kind of just turns pre-overdrive gameplay into a typical action platformer in a sea of other similar options. It's hard to imagine that Inti didn't realize that locking away Copen's core moveset instead of adding additional buffs to Overdrive kind of feels like a step backwards.

Ok before I start the video, it really sucks the Nova fight and the updated ending was added recently. They definitely add narrative context that's required, and it's a shame this video will likely miss it. Hopefully a mini follow up next year once Epilogue ATEMS is out where that can be covered, November Boss (likely Asimov), Nova, and the updated ending can be covered.

I can say this though as someone who started off with this game, I did have a whole lot of fun with it and I still do...... That is until I went around to play the 2nd and 1st game after getting them on sale along with the 1st Copen game and talking with a friend, I realized dear God does this game have some big brain things that make my mind go wait why is this happening? The 1000 year time skip was something that really made me go wait why is this needed because that means nearly every single character from 2 is dead except for gunvolt which by the way the fact that gunvolt despite being the main character for all these games, he is NOT fully playable and instead is VERY limiting with Kirin being the only playable character. Don't get me wrong I definitely like her as a character but it just feels bizarre to not have GV be a permanent playable character like he was Zero from Megaman X3, X from Megaman X7 and god help us, Dante from DMC4. The latter of which at least is fully playable in that end in 5. So I don't really understand what was the point with the time skip which meant that Copen is clearly dead and side lining GV.
Edit: So I finally beaten gunvolt 3 and overall yeah there was no reason to sideline GV in this game at all and he still should have been a playable character. The 1000 year time skip was still something that didn't need to happen, and aside from MAYBE explaining what happened to all the other characters, I still don't like that they basically wiped the slate clean just to make room for all of these new characters. I still have a ton of questions that don't really have answers and while I still had fun with this game, I can definitely understand why my friend had some issues with how the narrative was being told and I'm starting to feel that too.

Heya, I enjoyed both your videos. I think they're very well done.
Now that you've interacted with the Gunvolt community more, there's a decent chance you've heard of me. Much of the finer score attacking/mechanical knowledge EN side comes from me, and if you've seen a google doc with a calculator on it, that's my handiwork.
I'm, less than happy with the new games. And am known for being hypercritical of them for basically every reason. I'll spare the raw negativity but I do wanna talk about some gameplay stuff with these two games, and why the score attackers feel let down.
Razor wheel was born as the defining feature of iX2. It warped the game around it. They wanted it to be used by score attackers and newbies alike, but it doesn't fit in Copen's gameplay loop like you said. So what they did was deny you Copen's gameplay loop until you used the pizza cutter enough. The big new feature comes off as a load to bear, and that's why people despise it. It's also why healing is infinitely spammable with no cooldown, and other issues exist. Also in iX2 alone Copen can mash shoot to shoot faster and this immediately outclasses Razor Wheel's DPS sooooooooooo
GV3... Where to begin. There's no skill issue with your GV gameplay, his scoring is ass by design. Even besides his multikills awarding a pittance, he has a penalty applied to his raw damage Kudos, only earning 80%. Meanwhile Kirin's Chain gives her potentially 400%. On bosses she only earns 100% fortunately but the damage is done and GV is now strictly a movement tool to players like me.
So when you play as solo GV... You don't play him like GV. You Arc Chain one at a time in quick succession to get potentially stage encompassing combos. This is also how you ideally build GV meter. So now in GV mode you play janky weird Kirin instead of GV, which natualy has people bitter. Shoutouts to Zed who is instead a mostly straight Kirin clone, and takes the playable character count from what's intended to be 3 to what feels like 1.
Oh and remember how GV's scoring is ass? Wasn't supposed to be! In the release date trailer, you can see them swap to GV and *retain Kirin's Chain.* Yeah. Yeahhhhhh. This is the interplay of two characters shit Inafune was talking about (and Tsuda came up with). Just, gone, before release. So instead of a badass swapping mechanic racking up crazy scores we... Have a crutch and a character spamming one move.
Even as a Kirin game, the game doesn't deliver. Like you said, Kirin has next to no reason to swing her sword. Also the Quick Razor bonus exists it's just a +10 and has a microscopic window because 🙂. Additionally, the sword fell into the exact same trap the Razor Wheel did. Mashing shoot does more damage more safely. Of course you need to actually melee sometimes so you can't just pretend it doesn't exist but, yeah. I'd love to say it's a balance mistake but Tsuda plays GV3 bosses by almost exclusively focusing on charms which suggests that this is apparently working as intended and everybody is scratching their heads. This also applies to XX.
On a related note, Prevasion is a trap in this game much like healing is in iX2. Charms can only be destroyed by Prevading. So you use charms less on bosses. This has lead to a divide where players who immediately chucked Prevasion think far less of melee than those who do use it.
I'm down to talk gameplay and strategies with damn near anyone so if you ever have gameplay questions I'm your dude. I'm also gonna mention that Dragon Marked For Death you probably don't need to play multiplayer. People got that impression because the underlying math in DMFD is all kinds of fucked up and will totally stonewall you eventually if you don't stop and read guides. Otherwise though? Singleplayer is mostly fine. Two players is plenty, too. More than that and people tend to feel like they're being carried, and end up seeing not much action.
Sorry for the 3 page youtube essay 😅

Wow, as someone who just played GV3's standard task and demanding tasks, this was quite interesting to read in order to get some perspective of other types of player, thanks!
(To share my opinion, I personally like Kirin's gameplay. It feels absurdly fast and touching the ground is heresy to me and that's something that I personally really enjoy. I will agree tho that gv being kirin 2, temporal and more op was... somewhat of a sad choice of design. And the plot has me mad for QUITE a few reasons.

Playing as Kirin is probably the most fun I've had between the three Gunvolt protagonists, but I've always found myself thinking of ways to improve Kirin, which wasn't something I did for Copen, who I felt was already solid and can only be improved with minor tweaks and different EX Weapons. And it probably was due to how limited she felt in terms of the abilities that she gets. I use the uppercut and the downward spin slash fairly regularly, but I never use the charged talisman or the sheathe attack, and I overall felt that Kirin lacked a meatier attack like a proper charge slash. It ultimately feels like she doesn't have any stand-out damage options like Copen or Gunvolt have. An air dash also feels like something that should have been part of her kit but just isn't.
I also like how GV plays in 3, but it's very clear that he was turned into a crutch that I am unfortunately incentivized to not use. I'd love to see a Gunvolt 2.5 where I get to play as a mix between OG Gunvolt and 3's Gunvolt, where he's as versatile as he is in 3 but not as overpowered. As it stands, 3's Gunvolt exists in the extremes where he either melts bosses' HP with a barrage of lightning or an insta-kill suplex or is unable to do much if you arrive with low fetters (especially as Special Gunvolt). I'd absolutely accept a drop in raw power if it means a way to better maintain fetters during bosses. The best thing I can think of right now is a sort of graze mechanic where just barely dodging an attack grants kudos and increases fetters, but I'd definitely want to workshop more ideas on making a better Gunvolt 3 GV.
Regarding Zed looking to play like Kirin and Gunvolt already taking some of Kirin's abilities, that's ultimately the result of Gunvolt 3's level design and boss patterns being fine-tuned for Kirin and her Arc Chain. Unfortunately, that means any other playable character must also have an Arc Chain equivalent and will end up blurring into each other as that's the dominant mechanic of the game.
And the less I try to go into my thoughts on iX 2 the better. They introduce two new designs for Copen with clear specializations that he can switch between, except there's no real distinction between them. It's entirely visual, with him automatically switching between the two forms based on what action he's doing. If you ask me, that's an absolute waste, especially when the removal of the Bullit system means the reload could be repurposed as a form shift. Break form can be all about raw power and slicing through bulky enemies with melee attacks and tanking damage but is slow and has no air game and with it no combo game, whereas Bullit form would be typical Copen gameplay but limited by a lack of bulk and defensive options and an inability to effectively break through shielded and armored enemies on its own. The game could be built on strategically choosing what form to be in and when to shift, as shifting would break any air combo you've built in exchange for a burst of raw damage or leave you standing still for a bit as the less defensive Bullit form before regaining superior mobility, and more ways to shift beyond the standstill reload method could be unlocked as you progress (the stomp could be an instant shift to Break form, for example).

Also whenever there’s a group where at least one enemy has more hp than the others staggering the kills with Flashfield has been very useful

Not gonna lie, I felt a bit betrayed by the direction the franchise is going. I enjoyed GV1 and 2 but didn't like Copen's playstyle all that much. I still gave iX1 a chance but didn't enjoy that either. Then, I finally play GV3 and find out Gunvolt has been relegated to a power-up. It almost feels like Inti is trying to run Gunvolt out of his own series. I was fine with iX being its own timeline and thought that meant GV would get to keep his story but GV3 took that away as well

I wasn't that big a fan of 3. Haven't tried iX 2. I fell in love with Gunvolt because of my love of electrical super powers. First off in regards to missing dubs for Gunvolt 3, I believe they said somewhere the english dubs for the additional DLC content will be coming at a later date. Since the Zed DLC is pretty big all things considered and it's story important I would assume thats when, they're already gonna dump a lot of time into dubbing that anyways. Might as well get some folks to dub Teseo, Merak, Nova/Shinden, and all the other undubbed image pulses and such.
Ix2 and GV3 are, weird for me.
As you said in the last video and probably somewhere in here, I've already forgotten despite this comment being typed right after watching it. It's most likely a sign of change coming to the gunvolt series as a whole.
I enjoyed Ix2 Copen and Kirin, they both had their own distinct way of playing away from their inspirations. In that way I can say I love every playable character in the Gunvolt series.
(Though I really expected more from Zed in complete honesty, from his boss fight I expected him to be either completely unique, or a fusion of Kirin and Gunvolts gameplay. Looks more like a replica of Kirin which.. I guess isn't too bad)
I love Ix2 and GV3. As much as I love GV1,2 and Ix.
I hope for the next entry we see a coming together of the Azure Dragon, White Tiger, Black Genbu, and Phoenix. I wouldn't know how Copen would come back but since the hard mode ending of Ix2 gives him the ability to travel to other dimensions it's almost a no brainer that he would probably rejoin the GV mainline timeline... if GV2 Copen doesn't reappear that is, which would be... a mind-boggling.
And Xiao Wu... is you would recall, in GV2 his main beef is with Eden. I have no idea what he's planning but if the Djinn has anything to do with him. Then I would assume he would return as well, as an antagonist or otherwise.
You made a great pair of videos covering the Gunvolt Series Nova! Applause from me!

Way late to this party but I kinda pegged that the iX Copen in Blaster Master Zero 2 is just Copen from his version of the Gunvolt 2 storyline. He learned his sister was secretly an adept to everyone including herself and he didn’t want his blood-soaked hands getting grubby anywhere near her. So he feigned his death and needed an alias to completely ensure he’d shake off any connections to family and past foes alike.
What helps is the sense of scale. Copen in Gunvolt 2 crafted the White Tiger Jacket loadout in that game in a matter of months and made it through the Zonda crisis with it in tact, so he could just build upon it to stand up to the way more jacked cosmic nonsense that goes on in Blaster Master Zero canon (VS Battles illustrates the difference in power level very nicely). Meanwhile, Copen in iX canon was thrown into a post-apocalyptic nightmare because Asimov won and turned Simeragi against humanity, so Copen had to slow burn his way from human to cyborg AND only finished the same White Tiger Jacket tech shortly before the game started. What this would mean is that a hypothetical main story iX met and helped Jason & friends in Blaster Master Zero 2 (his iX2 DLC established that they did indeed meet and team up, but our Copen iX doesn’t know him) and then THAT iX, one who exists over a century sooner in the timeline, would go on to further improve his tech, grow up into The Creator (and his Lola into Mother Computer) in response to a crisis that turned the Earth infertile and inhospitable, and established the Grave Pillar with Mother in charge as a last hope for humanity’s revival on the planet.
Though I haven’t researched the lore since iX2 and GV3 both first dropped and don’t hang out in the Discord server, so I have zero idea how well this holds up.

I'm not sure if there are any comments here mentioning it since I haven't seen any but the ghosts of mother and the creator (20:24) technically have a few weird implications.
For starters there's apparently art of the ghost mother which depicts her in a form that looks very reminiscent of GV2 Roro but older. Most notably the purple eyes and the lack of a big ring that iX Roro has.
However you interpret this information is up to the viewer but one possible interpretation (how I view it at least) is the alternate dimension you're in is possibly the distant future of the mainline GV timeline where all life has evidently ceased to exist.
This would explain how mother has access to ex weapons from Eden for example. It doesn't excuse the fact that the story is very vague and up to interpretation.
    On gameplay,
I agree that Copen's entire appeal is somewhat removed from his moveset in the previous games but a few things I'd like to mention:
    1. While yes the best way to rack up kudos is the quick wheel bonus, aerial EX is still viable for racking up kudos alongside the returning bonus emblems which makes it a bit more balanced than you'd think
    2. The bullit gauge really should've been a base game feature rather than Yumo's passive ability but with how easy kudos are to rack up it's not a huge issue imo
3.The homing attack isn't that bad, it's just not always the best option. If you reaaaally want it to do tons of damage then mash the shoot button. No joke, it exponentially increases your damage for whatever reason.
But the above aside, yea the combat has some issues but its not as bad as what I've heard some people say about it personally. If you don't like it then more power to you, I just hope to bring some insight about it as someone who enjoyed the game and proceeded to play every other GV game after iX2 made me interested in the rest of the franchise.
And yea, hard mode required for the true ending is insanely annoying, especially when Copen's entire moveset is designed around being in Overdrive

I personally found the story’s of both games fine and they get across their ideas enough, more depth would be nice but I’m not left with too much of a void. I personally saw the end of GV3 to be a semi parallel to Mytyl/Joules ending especially with all the retrospect happening in the story. The ending is GV finally being released from the chains that continued to make his life hell which was his past, he never got to know anything like true happiness until he was broken and thus his past would always taint the peace he lived in. With his life now restarting he has the opportunity to live a better life presumably with the Dragon Saviors either a branch of them in the 10-16 years in the future or Kirin and the gang. I say this is a parallel as that’s basically what happened to Mytyl, the strife in her life preventing happiness was her Septima and with a blank slate she can live happily as well
For Ix2 I had a thought that it was yet another alternate Copen centric timeline branching from GV2’s ending to explain all the abilities Mother had and an explanation for how she had a Muse form

In my steam review, I pointed out something I noticed in the themes of these new stories that changed compared to the previous games and even previous Inti Creates games in general. These new gunvolt universe games just don't have the same themes the past ones did. GV 1 and 2 as well as iX 1 had heavy racial conflict as a core part of the story, while it's just completely gone from these new ones. Mega Man Zero and Dragon Marked for Death also have similar themes. I suppose in a way, GV 3 is similar to ZX where they've moved beyond most of that conflict, but frankly, the ZX series just felt extremely weak in their story compared to the Zero series for me. I'm guessing they're trying to move away from those racial conflict themes and move onto new ones, but the story seems to have suffered as they try to write something that I just don't feel like they're good at.
Personally, I think a prequel focusing on Asimov would be an incredible way to expand the plot of the series and potentially give them time to think of what to do next in the story. We've only really seen him at the end of games, where he's been set into his goals. It could be interesting to see everything that led to that.

What I would've changed about them is that for the 2nd charged move, holding the talisman button would've had Kirin lock on to multiple enemies up to the number of talismans Kirin has on hand like we saw in the sneak peak; for the 2nd reload slash, I would've turned it into a counterattack much like Kirin XX; the 2nd uppercut is doesn't need to be changed; the drop attack doesn't need to be changed either, I would just add the 3 rising swords at the end much like Kirin XX.

All I will say is that they need to make GUNVOLT 4 better because they think they can kill off GV when he is the main character of the series, like no, I’m sorry, they better make GV the playable character again

I can't remember if this was just some fever dream I had, since I can't remember where I read this, but: I believe that in the same discussion where it was said GV was made overpowered over the fear of opinion's on Copen being stronger, it was mentioned we should only expect GV to play like this solely for this game, and that it wasn't a sign of what his future gameplay would be.

Add Xiao, Coppen(GV2 timeline) and the bird dude too as playable characters in next game with new GV(the baby/reborn GV is probably not the GV we know and love, but also may have his “Old memories”, I guess), because of 4 guardians/beasts thing they have….
