- Ferrets are much more than just pets. They were bred to hunt underground, and have a way of seeing the world that is quite different from us humans. Join me for this deep and dramatic dive into the world viewed through the eyes of a ferret! 👁️👁️
I need to say a huge thank you to a / @zeuspolecat as I used their excellent footage showing how ferrets hunt underground. They have not posted in over 3 years, and the content is a little graphic, so comes with a 'viewer discretion' warning. I saw your short and had to come by to see what you've researched about their eyesight, specifically the colour perception. My personal experience with domesticates, I'm a strong believer in the green and blue tone vision, because green toys are almost always the favorites of mine over the years. Froggies, alligators, etc are usually my go-tos. And if it also squeaks? Forget about everything else, that toy is #1. Great video!

My ferret Mishka had great ability to see where she wanted to go and did it. She one time jumped one foot up and one foot out and made it to where she wanted to go. Her sight there was amazing!

Superb, excellent quality video. Interesting speculating what colors ferrets might see. Red as a prominent color may makes sense as a predator as a harm indicator.

Love your channel! Your videos capture so much detail and your explanations are wonderful! Thank you so much. Maybe you could add that a ferret's pupils are slitted like a cat's but horizontal, rather than vertical. I was able to capture this in some pictures of one of my earlier ferrets, a not-quite-albino silver harlequin I adopted from a shelter. His eyes were dark mulberry red, and in camera flashlight, one could very clearly see the horizontal slit. Very curious!

Wow, had no idea ferrets were domesticed so long ago, I honestly thought it was within the last like 100 years or so lol
It's mad, isn't it? It's also probably why ferrets in general have so many genetic health issues, as the domestication process was quite rudimentary and wasn't looking at genetic deficiencies in the parents...

Awesome video! Nat Geo level. Your video skills show here. The hours I have spent watching our ferrets over the years as they wander around, wondering how they see and think, finally an answer to those questions! Interesting about the color spectrum… I wonder if it plays into stuffed animals? Our boy ferret packed stuffed animals & wrestled with them/us, but not really balls. Our girl ferret was opposite, targeted rolling balls mostly. Never thought about color though.

I have a ferret who intentionally picks out yellow balls, which are his favorite toy.
That is interesting... Wriggles tends to go for the brightest balls, which also tend to be red... but I'm not sure if it is the red or the brightness that attracts her :)
@@FerretTubeTV I have six ferrets in all. I take mine with me in turns when I go shopping. Smokey Bear is obsessed with red. When he sees something wrapped in red packaging he wants it. Other colors don't impress him much. I read that ferrets can't see beyond a few feet. My roommate likes to hide Pooh Bear's favorite stuffed animal in different parts of the room. He will race in, stop, look around until he sees it and heads straight for it. I know that the experts tell us this isn't possible, but I don't think any of mine read those books.

My ferrets have shoe vision; if there is a shoe within 100 feet of them, they can hone in on it, dig out the inner sole, chew the rubber, and destroy the aglets!

I had to give up my ferrets because I’m allergic, took me months to realize they were the ones making me sick, it’s too bad, I trained them well
Oh, that must have been really hard! It's usual too as ferrets are normally less allergen triggering than dogs and cats. At least we can help fill a ferret-sized hole in your life hopefully 🥰🐾
@@FerretTubeTV yeah, there’s literally nothing that I know of that I’m allergic to other than ferrets atm, so it was a shock to me when I did a test and picked them up after I was aware and my chest instantly tightened up, I was blown away, I had a thousand bucks invested in their care and setup, I felt stupid really being sick all the time, going to work and everyone called me out for looking tired, my eyes were dried out and scabbed over, I bought cremes and everything, it sucked when it dawned on me that it was my babies, luckily I found a home for free, but dang what an expensive reveal
Wow... that's quite the journey - it warms my heart to hear about another person giving so much care and attention to their ferrets though. An idea for you - as you are not allergic to anything else, I wonder if you're maybe not allergic to all ferrets? If you wanted to investigate further you could look for an ferret breeder local to you and ask if you can come visit to see if you react to them. OR maybe you've moved on, in which case, glad to have you in the Crew here 🥰🐾

Haha yes! My secret is to use a gopro on slow motion with a macro lens mod. Then film them nice and close... then go through the video frame by frame to find the best photo!

I don't have that guide ready yet.. it is in the works though (have you seen my treats guide? ruclips.net/video/FgpcLt6JFJI/видео.html). In the UK Iams Kitten is actually one of the two best kibble brands for ferrets! 😁 It is 2nd after Applaws Kitten. Personally I use a 50/50 mix of Iams and Applaws, just in case there is a problem getting one of them at any time. @@FerretTubeTV oh I didn’t know iams kitten was the best, I think I’m feeding him on the adult ones so I’ll change that, and I’ve watched your treat ones, I’ve screenshotted the ones you feed yours!
Looking at the Thrive Prime dry kibble ingredients, it has 10.5% sweet potato/potato to provide carbohydrate, which from my Treats Guide you might remember this is basically similar to sugar. So not great. Thrive does have some 100% freeze dried meat treats which look good though. For the Iams, yes you need to be on the kitten version. Same for the Applaws... Hope this helps!

Haha, I'm impressed. Mine always just fling themselves at their target landing spot, with their little legs stretched out like a flying squirrel. I swear they close their eyes too 😂😂
