Description
------------------
In this video we 3D Print some gears for the CD-ROM unit of the Panasonic 3DO FZ-1. The original gears were nylon which, over time, shrink and crack causing the drives to fail. This is the start of an investigation into whether "engineering resin" is a suitable material to use. Previous resin types have been far too brittle.
This video covers the printing process. The fitting and testing will be in a separate video due to video length (and my lack of stamina).

M3 Pro? Nah the M3 Max is a better bang for your (mega) bucks...Oh, you're talking about 3D Printers and not the latest Apple Laptops. ;-)
I can’t even afford the fuel to drive up the m3, let alone a Mac
Excellent stuff! Would just like to add that a cheap baking tray can provide great leak insurance thanks to the raised lip. My Mars 2 Pro is sitting in one at the moment.
I did have one for the Mars 2 P but it stuck to the table and had to be chipped off!!! I’d best get to Poundland!
Lovely to have you back, Mark! Hope you're well
Thanks! I’ve been really sick but I’m trying hard to get back to full health.
It’s great to see you back Mark. I missed enjoying your content. I hope all is well with you and the family.
Thanks, you too!
Where’s the channel ‘Mark Fixes Neil’s Stuff’ gone?
Jeez, 3D printing seems to be an incredible headache. No wonder buying 3D printed parts is always so expensive.
Yeah it can be a pain. Mind you a lot of people aren’t as incompetent as me.
Ooh
Get yourself a magnetic removable build plate. I have one on my Anycubic photon mono x, and it makes removal a lot easier
I git a spare build platform, two additional tanks and two flex plates as well. I learned the value of spares quickly using the Mars 2 Pro 😂
How do you clean the tip of your tool? Do you just wipe it on the curtains?
I've never seen resin printing. Quite interesting and sexy, with all that dripping. Hehehe... Sorry, got a bit carried away there.
The end result is good, but my goodness what a faff the whole process is !
100% yes.
Who puts a video online in the middle of the (fright) night?
Witches.
And me.
When I click save by accident.
Did the gears end up working out?
Holding up so far!
Your wobbly bits were'nt too intrusive.
Welcome back, Mark. Hope you and your family are well.
Witchcraft.
You're doing it all wrong, Mark! (yours lovingly, the internet)
I would be curious to learn more about overwashing and overcuring.
Have you found resources on what times are recommended?
My experience has been that we are expected to guess these times ourselves, which I find a bit baffling for mass produced printers and resin. You would think they would have guidelines readily available.
We share the same dream. It looks like we’re left to our own devices.
shaking cans is all in the wrist!! Bit like ..........
Long-term stability with resin is a big question. However, you can mold resin-printed parts with silicone, and then pour proper urethane resin. Just need to test that resin and silicone are compatible. Some resins inhibit silicone curing. Robert Tolone has a useful channel with lots of tips.
Thanks Alexander. This is really great information.
Great to see you back Mark! When are you gonna do some more retro restorations! I need my fix! Great content as always
you tease with a great Simpsons t-shirt!
Glad to see you back mate
Thanks James.
So many satisfying peels. It's a good, warts and all demonstration of resin printing. Great to watch. 😊
Thanks so much! 😊 it is a properly messy process!
15:11 Oh Mark... 😆
Shhhhhhh
😂 17:27 !! Oh what imagination I have!
Hi Mark, good to see another interesting video.
Was wondering what happened to the Amiga 600 that you ultrasound cleaned several months ago?
Not sure, but did you recommend Duratool solder in a earlier video.
My moo gun from CPC also came with a 13 amp fuse which was overkill. Even with the pump and heater a 5 amp fuse is plenty.
I always clean my tool after use. its a good rule of thumb.
Great video, really liked seeing the whole resin process! This is the EvilPaul that posted the gear originally, always interesting to see that gear pop up. Happy some people have improved it. It was was made for my FZ-10 nearly 15 years ago. I had access to a early Makerbot and I remember the gear pushing the limits of how finely detailed it could print. The gear seemed a little loud for me when I used it but fixed a super common problem so I was happy. Thanks for pointing out a remixed copy, I might have to give it a go.
Oh wow! I'm not worthy!!!! I've used your gear on a lot of 3DOs. As you say they are a bit noisy but they work. I'm hoping this will cure that noise and also have longevity. It's brilliant how people like yourself are doing things like this to fix isses that were previously a death certificate for the CD mechanism. Thank you so much Paul!
@@MarkFixesStuff You're too kind, thank you! You do great work yourself, I'm happy a friend shared this video because of the gear because you earned a new sub! Look forward to seeing more of your content!
I'd love to hear an update on how this gear turns out.
Paul you need a tighter hole.
